Upset about having to upgrade your exotics all over again? Then you need to read this.

I have been hearing and seeing a lot of talk about people being upset about having to level up their exotics again. I think everyone is missing the big picture. Every other game comes out with an xpac, it makes the current gear worthless and you need to hunt for the new items and level them up all over again. The way Destiny will be doing it, you get to keep using your current gear. So what if you have to level it all over again! You would have to do it anyway! We get to keep using the gear we have. I forone am glad that my Mythoclast will still be useful after the xpac hits. I had to grind the Vault of Glass over 20 times before I got it. I would be really pissed if I spent all that times looking for it and leveling it up, just for it to have to be let go because the next set of gear is better. So stop complaining and be happy that ALL of your hard work has not been for nothing. Keep this in mind, You're not leveling up the exact same exotic items, You'll be leveling up upgraded versions of them. And no one is forcing you to upgrade the old exotics, you can keep them the way they are now or go find new items. It's up to you. You have a choice. Another thing is, you're playing an RPG. If you're new to these kind of games I'll let you in on a secret. RPG's require you to grind and grind to get your characters up. I also wanted to thank everyone for the great Discussions. When I first posted this I was expecting more name calling and insults. But almost everyone on both sides have been civil and polite for this and I think that's awesome.

  • I don't think you understand why people are upset. Here is a summary of some of the issues: 1) False illusion of choice. Bungie tried to sell this as a choice players get to make. The problem is that the current exotics cease to be relevant compared to new raid weapons and the new exotics unless you upgrade them. For those of us who enjoy raiding, we already know that we will have to level our weapons again. It isn't a choice - it will be required for them to stay relevant in content. And we are just finding this out now - 5 days before the expansion. To give you an equivalent, what if you were playing a computer game and reached a point some 100 hours in. The game then said "We're sorry, but to continue you need to go back to where you were at the start." Would you be happy? 2) Weapons and armor are more than just equipment. Destiny did something fairly unique. They tied your leveling system into the equipment you are wearing. In an MMORPG like World of Warcraft, while your equipment may become obsolete, your skills do not. However, in Destiny when you take off a weapon you lose "skills", and when you take off a piece of armor you actually lose levels. You and others that keep pushing the "This is better than other MMORPGs" aspect need to take a step back and understand that equipment in Destiny does not function like equipment in other MMORPGs. If you don't believe me, go equip a level 20 blue item and look at your level before and after. That alone should make it obvious. When Bungie says "you need to reset your exotic weapons and armor to no experience" they are really saying "You need to lose all your skills and perks and go back several levels." This doesn't sound bad, but when combined with the next problem becomes huge. 3) Bungie is actively punishing people who spent time to level the weapons. To see why, take someone who leveled an Icebreaker vs. someone who has one in their inventory with nothing done. The person who leveled the Icebreaker has spent: 18 ascendant shards or 1 exotic shard 80 material 212,500 total experience a fair amount of glimmer. Both people have to spend 7 coins and 7000 glimmer to upgrade their weapon (while rumors have been floating around that the weapon needs to be fully leveled to be upgraded, I believe there was a post by Deej saying that a weapon with no upgrades can be reset). They then have to spend 7 more coins on an exotic shard to finish the upgrade. In other words, the benefit someone gained from taking the time to level the weapon? Absolutely nothing. They would have been better off playing another game during the time they spent leveling their weapon. Now look at the problems again. Basically, Bungie took those who spent time leveling their gear and told them that time was worthless compared to someone who did nothing, and forced them to start over. I hope you can understand why people don't like that. Honestly speaking, people would have dealt better with planned obsolescence with new content. At least then they wouldn't have the whole "wasted time" aspect to deal with.

    • World of Warcraft does a complete gear reset once every two years by releasing a major expansion pack. Raids in WoW come out roughly every six months, and the progression involves wearing the gear from the old raid into the new raid and collecting the new gear. If you did the previous tier on hard mode, your old gear is good enough to do the new hard mode. If you do not have the previous tier of raid gear, you generally have work to do. There are no lengthy upgrade paths for weapons in that game. You may need to use a few gems or some enchantments, but unless you have no professions, the costs of obtaining these, as measured by time, is far lower than the number of hours it takes to grind 190,000 experience into a Destiny gun, collect 80 destination materials, and the thousands of glimmer you need to spend on upgrades. You also generally only have one weapon that you use in WoW each tier. In Destiny, people have collected and upgraded lots of exotic guns so they can play with different loadouts. They've already spent a lot of time getting their guns to this point, and now they are being completely reset, requiring the further investment of thousands of destination materials, hundreds of thousands of glimmer, and hundreds of strange coins.

      • Problem for me isn't the Weapon XP reset as much as what getting XP on weapon involves The only viable way in the game to XP up a weapon/armor with any kind of time efficiency is to do the blasted repetitive boring lame Bounties for the +5000 XP they give. Nothing else in the game earns XP at any meaningful rate, not even if you are using a Telemetry (again best used before turning in the blasted bounties). You get 0 XP when using weapon/armor in either Raid. You get just a tick over 0 XP when using it normally in any other gameplay mode. You get a slight bonus if you complete either Daily Heroic or the Weekly Heroic / Nightfall. You get some bonus XP if completing a story mission for first time. Beyond that, you are stuck doing the blasted bounties. Do you really want to keep doing those blasted bounties for hours and hours, just so you will have adequate weapons for artificially more difficult Raid (enemies level up to 31 and 32 in the new Raid, even for Normal Level 30 Raid). It is not the Raid that is "hard" or challenging, but rather the requirement to waste away your life inching up the damage and defense numbers, just so you have a fairer shot at succeeding. Destiny is the worse designed game I have played in long time. It is completely disrespectful of the players time. Bungie thinks their blasted bounties are the best part of the game and the thing players should be doing most... more than any other gameplay activity they might enjoy.

At least people dont have to buy/find the new updated versions of their gun after the expansion drops to get an upgraded version. I for one am happy there is an option to update my gear at a pace I can afford.

      • I can understand your optimism here, and i do get that the weapon does start off at 300, but why should I have to do all of the footwork to get the key perks back if I have already leveled them? Also, tell me why I should have to drop light levels just to make my gear more powerful and provide more light. This isn't the Matthew McConaughey commercial where we have to go backwards to go forward. The problem is the time invested. I got out of Borderlands 2 when they released a second level cap which meant that I had to go and farm all of the gear that I had all over again in order to stay current. Do you have any idea how difficult it is to get a Norfleet and a Sham legit without duping or trading??? It was very frustrating for me and I was not about to do it again. I am not looking forward to having to do this with every single DLC that comes out. I honestly need a lot more info about this and frankly I hope Deej sheds a LOT more light on how this works, because right now, it isn't okay. The gun would have to level crazy fast in order to make it worth doing, but even then the glimmer and strange coins and time investment makes it completely not worthwhile. I am aware nobody is forcing me to upgrade, but then again, why do I have to weaken myself, or my build for 20 points of damage? This idea wrecks builds for the time that you have to put back into leveling. Got that Voidfang build going? Not anymore. Now you are back to scratch as far as perks go, and you lower in light level-does that make sense? We are upset for a reason. Those that are okay with it are in fact, the MINORITY on this subject. Join the Dark Side chief...

          • The other aspect of this is that it's a way to keep you focused on grinding so you won't notice that there are only 4 or 5 new exotic weapons in this DLC.

          • No. I bought over 600 of each material, have at 11 exotic shards, and tons of telemetries for each gun. I am set. I planned for this. Lol.

Other MMOs don't have an xpac that makes gear useless after only 3 months! We didn't have the time to get them all yet!

          • If you're like me, and have duplicate Exotics, and did't just scrap your doubles, these unleveled duplicates will be the weapons you scale up. If you have only one of your favorite weapon/s, then resetting to upgrade further is better then leaving them obsolete. Keeping the current weapons and gear relevant and mixing them in the pot with the new ones will further diverse what everyone has equipped, so Guardians can further be unique.

            • Honestly this isn't that bad at least you still have the gun to level again. Compare this to the level cap raises in borderlands after the level cap raise a great gun at that cap had to be farmed for again at the new cap to be effective.

            • I agree with you and you explained it perfectly. Bungie is giving you a means to upgrade your existing exotic guns and not just letting them become obsolete. Why can't people see this? You don't have to reset all your exotics. You can work on one at a time to make it an even better gun, while keeping the existing power of your exotics, also at the same time getting and working on new guns. It is your choice whether you want to reset your existing exotic - the game is not forcing them to reset, that is your choice gun by gun if you want to transform them into a new generation version of the gun, otherwise leave them as they are or dismantel them if you don't need them anymore. You do not have to reset all your exotics, just the ones you want to. Why can't people see this? I am happy that they give you a way to transform an old gun into a new generation version. Just cause you have a Vex or Thorn does not mean you don't need any new guns. There will be new guns you will prefer and not have to bother transforming all your old exotics.

              • The problem is that they are wanting us to grid what we have already grinded. I'm find with grinding out new stuff, but my Hardlight is already maxed, why should it lose it's perks just to make it a tap bit stronger. I think it's a bad idea.

                  • Arbitrary XP wipe. I'd rather spend time grinding the NEW DLC weapons/armor NOT the old stuff. This isn't WoW and other "MMORPGS" we were told this wasn't a start getting new gear every DLC game pretty early on. If this was a WoW game I wouldn't be playing.

                      • I still feel like a lot of you aren't understanding. The weapon will NOT restart back at zero. you will be leveling a more powerful item. It starts at a higher state and finishes at a higher stat. Its like prestiging your item. Yes you have to level it over again, but its stronger this time around to let you keep it. How is this a bad thing? I get to keep my Icebreaker. That's a good thing.

                        • ME, Dragon Age, and Elder Scrolls are 3 RPGs that never made me re-upgrade gear that I spent hours on leveling, and fewer hours going on runs to gain the necessary mats to upgrade them with. Yes, they made old gear obsolete, but gear in those games didn't take near as long to upgrade, so their wasn't a huge time investment that I was being cheated out of. This isn't an RPG btw. RPG's have awesome stories, and you play an intricate role within that game's universe. In Destiny, you do not play a huge role in the universe, and there is not a story of note (yet).
