First, let me say that y'all have done an amazing job with updates. Almost every update has made this game better. Thank you for listening.
I have been trying to think for a while of a way to add diversification (all 30s look the same right now) without making it hard on your programmers. I think I figured it out!
Just like you can reforge an iron banner weapon with Lord Saladin, have Eva Levante "tailor" or "rework" raid gear.
It would cost motes of light or strange coins and it would make your raid gear take on the look of any class-specific uncommon, rare or legendary gear of the matching type.
This would allow every one to have complete customization and there would be no designing necessary (and hopefully minimal programming)
Bonus: it would make getting a raid armor drop that you have gotten before less obnoxious!

That might require a new customization system and I'm dead certain the Devs already went over this and "most likely" decided to keep it as a feature of a future Destiny release. Say, Destiny 2. Love your idea though, I too wish for more of a unique look. Sigh, the ego always rears its nasty head...

Anybody here play Diablo 3? Well if you didn't there was this lady that made your armor look like a different set of armor, yet you still kept the stats of the armor... It was awesome and I think that's what destiny should have

I like this idea. I love my vanguard helm, and I wish I could wear it while raiding and still be 30. Even if you had to destroy the original in order to get the look you want. I would be fine with that.
