10 years?

Let me preface this: I'm not complaining about Destiny, Bungie or the DLC model, just my thoughts. There is no chance that Destiny will make it for 10 years with the current model. The first DLC isn't due out until next month, and a good portion of the community has already completed all of the content. Tonight, a CoD game launches, in a couple of weeks it's the new expansion for WoW. Not to mention the new Assassin's Creed games and the re-release of all the Halo games in the next few weeks. Destiny has it's work cut out for it. And the way the DLC is being released, alienating the XBox community (I play on PS4, for the record), the XBox servers are going to be empty. When the servers get empty, and the diehards can no longer find a group, or their friends have all moved on to a different game, Destiny will be forgotten. Left on the shelf to play games that have new content. Once this happens, it's atrophy. It will be harder and harder for Bungie to hold on to Destiny, to justify putting money into the game. The entire model has been it's own destruction. The facts are pretty apparent - players are upset with Bungie because the first 2 DLC's are already on the game disc we bought. They aren't introducing new planets, or even enough content to keep people playing for that next 2 months until the next expansion. 5 strikes and a raid don't keep people entertained for 2 months. The entire game as it stands right now, hasn't done that. Why would they think that this small DLC would fare any better? I would have a simple suggestion for Bungie; open up the content that is on our game discs for free. We've already paid for the data. Get to work on a HUGE expansion to release in Feb or March. In the meantime, pop out micro-DLC's, for a few dollars each. Something like a new strike, maybe $10 for a new raid. But keep content rolling out at a quicker pace.

  • It's 10 years for the IP. Not for the first Destiny game alone.

Oh well, it is just hard to get excited for games anymore these days in all honesty. Part of what ruined me was playing all 3 Mass Effect games straight through last year. For some odd reason I was out to lunch and never played that series until a friend suggested it last year when I was burned out on current games. Wow what a fresh breath of air that brought me back to the days of KOTOR on PC. Now I expect every game to have an amazing drawn out story and plan, with well written characters and emotional driven story content that lets you sort of control what is happening. These expectations have basically killed my view of any current gen games coming out because time and time again they just don't compare and don't have enough content, or were piece mealed out for DLC, etc. I had been waiting for a solid ALIENS shooter for almost a decade, got super excited and bought into the hype for Colonial Marines, it was a massive letdown. Took a chance on Titanfall, it was fun for about 3 days until you realized it was just COD with parkour, mechs that last 10 seconds and everyone gets for doing nothing, and bots to fill the huge maps that no one runs around. Destiny in a way was my last hope and I bought into it based on Bungie and how much fun I had with the Halo series. I loved all the Bungie Halo games, detested Halo 4 for the most part since 343 tried to make the multiplayer more like COD to attract a bigger player base and I figured Destiny would be that sci-fi shooter game that would finally freshen things up for gaming. Nope...nothing to see here, just the same old story. Hopefully the Division will deliver, but in terms of games I am done buying into hype or preordering. Colonial Marines should have been the last straw, but for some reason I took a leap of faith on Destiny and preordered it as soon as it was available. Never again. Even the Master Chief Collection, as much as I am looking forward to playing Halo 2 and the massive amount of multiplayer content, is just rehashed games all over again, nothing next gen. I honestly am not quite sure why so many people are this excited about it. I'd be much happier with just a $30 version of Halo 2 re-mastered, I honestly have no desire to replay CE again after Anniversary and Halo 4 just came out 2 years ago, we don't need "new" versions of those games again. I found Halo 3 to be the most boring in the series, but as long as these developers know they can keep giving us the same crap product time and time again it isn't going to change. People bash on COD every year but still pre-order the game instead of putting their money where their mouth is. Gamers hand these companies huge sums of money for no reason without ever seeing a product and then wonder why they get duped at release, then they expect the company to "fix" the game when the company has already made their investment back and then some and just laughs all the way to the bank while giving the finger to the gaming community. Sadly this is the current state of games, and until people stop with the fanboyism and preorder nonsense , it is just going to continue.

        • Since we know D2 is already in development that will be indicator for shelf life. If they truly understand what needs improving and implement it then the series can make a very successful 10 year run. Even if they do nothing to address the issues they can still have a successful run just not as successful. Game companies know and understand gamers do not act like consumers but fans. No matter how bad a game is when released companies know they will have a hardcore group of apologists out there.

        • I do like the idea of a Big Expansion. Give me a whole nother chunk of the universe to explore. Round out the story. (lol yeah.) The DLC they're doing is more than acceptable. $20 used to be a few new PvP maps and a new gun and helmet. A set of PvP maps, new gear, new activities, upgrades to the general game world, an additional Strike, and a whole new Vault-style experience? I'm sold.

Console gamers Never heard of a 10 year plan nor are they even ready for that level of gaming. Then complains about having nothing but the same games over and over again, mainly cut and paste FPS titles. You can't even make this up. And obviously you have no idea how development works. The content isn't "locked" on the disc. Say that to a developer and see how stupid they look at you. The only thing that is there is the basic framework of the world. They still have to input code that adds other things to the world itself. Console gamers need to educate themselves alot more. Some of the stuff that flies out of their mouth is just plain ignorance.

            • also just as a side note but ,Dragon Age: Inquisition comes out on the 18th of this month (yes I realize it's not everyones cup of tea but it is looking a lot more promising than the current path of this game, and I can't believe I'm about to say this but it looks like EA is keeping their promise of putting gamers first and producing games that people want to play .)

Here's what Activision knows: people bitch, but rarely with their wallets. People come to the Internet & bitch their heads off about this & that, but they keep buying the games. People have been bitching in cod since 3arc reverted to WWII in WaW and they haven't stop bitching since, but they're still buying cod... People have been bitching in Halo since ODST only had old maps, but they're still buying Halo... People have been bitching about Xbox console failure rates since 2005, but they're still buying replacement consoles even after the warranty expires... People bitch and threaten and cry wolf, but they never stop buying. This, Activision knows.

                        • Well they already sold me. I'm loving Destiny 1 and will surely be getting Destiny 2. I just am looking forward to seeing my character grow over the years. I've already had great experiences in Destiny, and I look forward to that collection of memories growing, so I 10 years from now I can reminisce on it all.

                            • This 10 year thing is so misunderstood. In 2009 Activision and bungie met, in 2010 they signed a 10 year contract together ending in 2020, and bungie is free to leave or continue in 2020. In the next 6 years, they've agreed to release 4 destiny games & many dlcs. So a new disc/downloadable sequel every 18 months....

                              • I agree I had this same thought last night. The game is already getting stagnant. 2 dlc arent enough for me to even consider hanging onto the game, a new raid and a new strike (xbox one) whoop de doo. This game could have been amazing.

But i assumed that beta was 1-5% of the game. It was 25%. You are right on the atrophy. They have a small window to right this ship or the player base is gone forever. That being said, they already sold their disc's and dloads so, frankly, they may not even give a shit at this point.

This is rated T remember and I suspect pokemon and lego games could add to the misery considering bungie went out of its way to target a very young audience.
