What was the reward for better play in Halo 2 multiplayer? That game had a long lasting a vibrant multiplayer community.

That's a valid point. I played a lot of custom so the fun and thrill of victory is what did it for me.

Highest skill goes up from winning ranked games. You gain 1 EXP for every win, 0 for a loss, -1 for quitting. You could rank up without HS, but you'd reach a cap. Every 5-10 HS, it would bump you up another level set (provided your EXP met the requirements). H3 was probably the best game for stopping quitters. In H3, when someone quit I was actually disappointed. In Destiny I don't even care.
