While I agree the initial content should be larger I disagree that this is a bad method. I use two examples, comics and world of warcraft.
Comics and manga come out over time piece by piece over weeks months and years. Both of these can be considered books and only release tidbits over long periods of time. But guess what they still remain some of the most popular forms of written entertainment. No one complains that they didn't get all 1000+ versions of Spider-Man 20 years ago or that spending hundreds on a manga series like naruto or one piece isn't worth it ( I know there is contention on the quality of these but I'm just naming the big ones). Destiny, like comics and manga, is designed to keep you coming rather than playing the game in only a few days. So your idea about books doesn't make sense considering the biggest money makers are comics and manga not to mention multiple series such as Harry potter. So my question is would you rather have one game over time or 7 all for 60 bucks a pop including their own DLCs?
Next look at world of Warcraft. It boasts over a hundred million players. It, like Destiny now, only had a limited amount of content in the beginning that was added to and released over time. Warlords of dranore (I know it's misspelled) just came out years after the release. But people keep buying, playing, and paying monthly fees (I disagree with the idea of monthly "pay to play"). So from a business standpoint they are following in the footsteps of a similar game, although different in its own right.
So what they are doing as a business makes sense. Your idea of buying a book and only getting a prelude is the same concept of comics and manga that do very well. I personally think the prelude story was a small amount for a release, however if regular updates continue I will not be disappointed. What will deter me from Destiny is a multitude of pricy DLCs with minimal content. I hope this will not happen with the first two but its yet to be determined if their content is sufficient or not. Sorry for the long post if you read this far let me know what you think!

I would have to agree with you. This is a nice prelude to so much more. I have paid well over $60 for books in the past and never read them. (I'm a collector) so yes I can understand paying for something piece by piece. It makes the game more mysterious.
-
So I have to pay to complete the already pointless and uninteresting story? I see... makes sense thank you!
-
In a way it does, this way you pay for a piece of it vs paying more and being disappointed with all of it. I'm sorry it's uninteresting but at least you haven't paid the 35-40 for the two expansions. I truly hope it develops.

I'm not disagreeing with your entire post, but that part about WoW having limited content on launch is just wrong. The game was enormous and I wish Destiny followed suit.
-
Wow was also a straight mmorpg. Destiny was never labeled as such. So a side by side comparison is futile. Its apples and oranges. Destiny is an open world shoot and loot with mmo qualities. As such shooting stuff should simply be enough fun to compensate for what it lacks in the mmo area. I think its way better than borderlands and that game sold well and plays well.
-
As such shooting stuff should simply be enough fun to compensate for what it lacks in the mmo area.
You're kidding, right? Anyways, WoW came up the post, I just replied to what I read.
-
You've played like ten control matches. And just endless pve. So you already proved my point. Your stats say so. Spend time getting the best gear you can leveling it up getting guns and playing more crucible, iron banner in october, queens wrath tonight, and raids then you can tell me if its lacking in content
-
I've done the raid (didn't finish it, but I got up the last boss) I've done every strike and nightfall, and you can see my PvE stats. I don't care for PvP, if I wanted to play PvP I could have just played Halo or CoD or something. I'm really not sure what your point is. Or why you're suddenly being so hostile.
-
Not being hostile. Its just facts. And with your gear if you did the nightfall and made it anywhere far in the raid you were being carried by your team. No offense I actually play and pull my weight when I do play. With your gear and stats you'd get one hitted.
-
I did my part. It was fun. And my party were around my level so... Either way, this doesn't excuse the lack of content. You basically said yourself that they Substitute that with being able to shoot stuff, which is :s
-
Wrong profile I peeped my apologies. But yes this is a shoot and loot game. You're going to be doing an overabundance of shooting. The mmo qualities are get this... Massive multiplayer online. Not an mmorpg.
-
Right... But you made out like because I'm shooting a lot of things, it justifies the game missing out on more important stuff. That's simply not true.
-
Um how many hours of gameplay do people log into call of duty, halo, borderlands, etc with absolutely no story or anything interesting other than the fact you can shoot stuff?
endless hours
-
CoD isn't advertises as anything more than being able to shoot stuff, and every year it delivers that. Never really enjoyed Halo, but I know the Halo universe is huge and the movies and the books and etc etc And Borderlands is a Shoot n Loot with a decent story. Not to mention all of the easter eggs and humour.
-
Well bungie created all the halo lore. Which laid the groundworks for the universe of books games and comic. Look at halo 1 and you would never assume it would become how massive and deep of a story it actually is now.
-
What? You said in the post before Halo was just a mindless shooter like CoD or Borderlands, now you agree it's a huge intriguing story. You've lost me.
-
Dude the gameplay of halo is just shooting shit. The story and lore behind it all is deep. I don't know why you're so confused about that part. I read all the halo books and played the games. Story is rich, gameplay is you go here shoot this shoot that go here repeat. Its the name of the game.
-
But what you do has meaning because of the story. It's unfortunately not like that in Destiny. I've pretty much made up my own reasons to do stuff in them missions. At least on Halo the story evolves around the actions you inevitably take.
-
Halo was never really set to be as big as it is. It just became that way. So in hindsight looking back it seemed what we were doing had more effect because the game had a clear start and finish. Destiny does not. Not yet at least.
-
But it needs a start. It advertised an immersive, brilliant story that will span over 10 years. And this is how they started it?
-
Halo spanned over ten years and is still going. It "started" with you randomly on this ring world no clues to who you are your past really or even where you are. After the initial game books were written games made. Then you found out how master chief was made. He got a name. He wasn't just a faceless dude in a suit.
-
You just proved my point. They advertised its gonna be a ten year thing. The story will evolve and become deeper and more intricate. Have you never heard of a prologue and chapter 1-3 of a book which simply get you acquainted with the setting.. The people, places, time of year, general mood? This is like 9th grade English class now. Its exactly how a story starts. Start slow build steam peak then climax. Almost every screenplay for a movie or draft for a book is written the same way.
-
And I know nothing about any of those. As much as I want to be, I'm not interested in anything about this story yet. Nothing has been interesting enough for me to want to read the next chapter. If this part of Destiny was a prologue to a book, I honestly wouldn't buy it.
-
Well that's personally your opinion which I respect. I can see what they're doing and I know how bungie works with their games so they've got my attention. Not a diehard fanboy but I do like bungie. They care about their gamers and games so I know this will become something epic. Hopefully you change your mind further down the line and I'll see you star side once again
-
I'm hopeful. I got the expansion packs for free, so I have no reason not to play them, but the story better pick up quick. The only character that is interesting is the stranger. Your Ghost even denies you any kind of story at the beginning of the game ("something something war, but I won't bother you with all that") There was just no effort to set a scene or start any kind of character development. Should they really wait until DLC to even begin that process?
