VERDICT REACHED
(But feel free to share your opinion still)
After reviewing everybody's answers it looks like:
The light RPG elements in Destiny do not, in any way, scare off people who rarely play games.
(Post verdict: I was not complaining about the game, neither in the sense that I couldn't understand the game (quite a gamer since 5 years) nor was this a secret attempt to whine about game chat. It was simply a question: does Destiny scare away casuals with it's
mechanics or nah?)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I realize they want as many people as possible to play, but it seems like there's a few things that gear this game towards an audience that will get deeper into to the game than halo.
First object on the list of rejection of casuals *ahem*:
The leveling up system an advantage to players who actually study stats and understand what's going on. It's not just "whoah I found an awesome gun, bro!"
It's
"Whoah I found an awesome gun, bro! Now I need to level it up and choose the best perks to enhance this weapon! I wonder what they are?"
Second object on the list of whatever I called it *cough cough*:
The procuring of armaments. You don't just level up and get new guns like in popular shooters (obviously this is an FPS RPG but there are so many people comparing it to call of duty and halo..and titan fall for that matter. It's a different type of game, people!)
So you actually have to peruse the different ways to get your weapons and which ways give you the best results, which requires more thought, scaring away casuals who just want to PEW PEW! (Which bungie might want a more hardcore audience, I can't read minds)
Third and final item on the list of birthday cake oreos *munch munch*:
The most controversial aspect of destiny (unless they change it): no talking to randoms. While at first this might seem like an over sight, WHAT IF bungie did this on purpose so those little secrets like "this gun is a two shot kill!" Or "hey I know a secret area" wouldn't get spoiled for newbies? You know you hated it when your buddy who had call of duty ghosts told you what the best gun was, or that random in halo 3 who spoiled the campaign secrets while playing mutiplayer. Maybe bungie is trying to keep casuals away from the secrets so pros can feel like they're special?
Anyways, main point (edited): Destiny is a game, in my opinion that will be a turn-off for players that don't want to dig deep into the game to be become legend, and just want to grab a preset gun and shoot.
Agree? Disagree? Tell me.
Do you think Destiny is for a hard core or casual audience?
Edit: well since nobody understands what I meant by "casual" and "hardcore" apparently, I'll explain.
My def. of Casual: Someone who plays only mainstream games and is basically a beginner at, well, everything. I do not mean someone who plays for fun, but has played quite a lot, which seems like the accepted definition. I'm talking about someone that's knowledge of halo is limited to the name of Master Chief XD
Def. of "hardcore": Basically all you need to know is that "hardcore" in my case does NOT mean competitive XD It doesn't matter if you're playing PvP or offline by yourself. I don't mean someone who follows mlg or anything like that. "hardcore" for me is just someone who spends plenty of time on games, even if they aren't competitive at all.
Edit 2: Hey guys, if you read this thinking I was using "casuals" as a derogatory term, go back and read it again knowing that I DON'T HATE CASUALS. I was merely using the term to refer to a group of gamers who don't play games very often and I was in no way trying to make them sound stupid.
Okay? (:

29 RespuestasWe see all gamers as equal. We don't see casuals. When I read that word, I stop reading.
-
I hate that word. . .casuals. . .i can smell your modded controller through the phone.

Destiny is designed precisely for casuals. Bungie's genius is to allow people who do not play FPS games to feel "legendary" by shooting bullet sponge bots in a highly stylistic way. Destiny's innovation is you can carry a fancy gun online without having to be shot by another person. If Bungie wanted to scare casuals, it would force every player to compete in the Crucible.

1 Respuesta1. Bungie is trying to breathe life into a genre of game (FPS) that is becoming so cliched that its verging on self-parody. They are trying to do it by blending the elements of many different genres of games into one game. 2. They are trying to build a game of great depth...so that people keep coming back to play it again and again....but do it in a way that you don't create this MASSIVE advantage for hardcore players, and force new players to have to run this guantlet of humiliation and simply being target practice for better players. Like you see in the Battlefield games. 3. They are trying to build a community that they hope will last a decade. Which means they have to find ways of limiting bad behavior in a segment of the gaming community that is INFAMOUS for its bad behavior and toxic competitiveness. IOW, you can't grief or troll people if you can't talk to them when you are away from the Tower, if they aren't on your fireteam. That way you don't get the situation I had playing Titanfall, where some idiot literally meassaged me through XB Live, JUST for the purpose of trash-talking about how much I S*cked, and how much better he was than me. I didn't even engage this idiot. I simply blocked him, and deleted the messagel.

Editado por swirve: 8/19/2014 10:41:04 PMCasuals and noobs are going to be beasted on in the PvP....by 6 man deep pubstar clans and true clans who have no other way to play others.... I don't care what they say about skill matching making, which is not fool proof..

The elitism in the forum is already strong so maybe bungy just went with that flow and tried to feed all these proud elite soldiers that sit in the basement and are just so pro that bungy got scared of them. But yeah a progression thing like in borderlands 2 would have been cooler imo. Like if you want to kill stuff with your buddies take them with you, things will be harder then. But if you want to you can also clear stuff solo. Would have been cooler, but they had different plans for the game :) I just hope you can enjoy the game when ever you want to and they dont force you to bend your life so you can progress further like wow or games like that.

2 RespuestasI would consider myself to be a casual gamer and not being able to communicate is very upsetting. When I say casual that doesn't mean I'm bad or that I only play for relaxation I'm quiet competitive but not to the point of GameBattles or anything like that. It's disappointing to hear so many people say that bungie is driving people away with things like 6 man raids and fire team only talking when the game hasn't even come out yet. Worst case scenario: message to all recent players. Done.

I'm a casual and I loved the beta. I'm sure I'll love the full game too
-
Honestly this game is the most fun game I have played in a long time. Players can play at their own pace and if they have an issue the community is awesome. If anything the causal player will become the hard core playing this game.
-
LOL This game is casual HQ
-
My definition of casual: Anyone who plays for no other reason that just having fun or relaxing. My definition of Hardcore: People who go trying to make money in economies, professional gamers, and just people who only play games in their free time (no reading, seeing friends, swimming etc).
Yes, most everyone is a casual in my book. I am. I only play games for fun. Why the -blam!- should anyone be a hardcore person?
-
They have said that you'll have to be devoted. And I bet even a casual could do that to an extent.

2 RespuestasEditado por Crestfallen: 8/19/2014 7:40:31 AMI disagree. The elements of an RPG that Destiny have are incredibly dumbed-down and straight forward. My faith in Humanity would be lost if people couldn't handle being able to level up or upgrade weapons.
"Oh shit... Time to level up my gun... Let's see... A different scope, or higher fire rate... Shit. IT'S SO DAMN CONFUSING!" - Said no casual ever
-
I believe your right but not for the reasons you have given the gameplay is top notch and very easily accessible but to make your character the best build possible for your play style that does require more thought but that's also true for pokemon what is anti casual is the lack of basic support and communication which isn't an issue for people who are accustom to joining clans in games but for casual gamers it just sends up a flag saying either join a clan so you can access the endgame content or go back to playing Titanfall/COD/Halo which is a dreadful thing to do with a game hoping on people to stick around keep playing and keep buying expansion packs I love pretty much every aspect to the game except the stupid restrictions it forces onto player e.g. you can't just bump into another guardian and as if they want help you have to have 5 other people ready to even access our endgame content and were not gonna help you find those other players if your afew guardians short

3 RespuestasThe way you describe "casuals" and "hardcores" is the way you actually describe "newbies" and "experienced". But no, Destiny doesn't scare away the new gamers. On the contrary, it's a beautiful start. An open world with a vast number of possibilities while keeping the basic "shoot what you see" policy. The customization is quite easy. Not so deep you need to spend hours on it, but deep enough to have a good variation. It's good for both parties.
-
I think their shooting for both groups. As far as stats go it's not that hard and this is coming from someone who hates math. Remember kids Google is your friend.
-
1 RespuestaEditado por Natural04: 8/19/2014 9:54:17 AMI actually find the stats and customization options to be quite shallow compared to a game like diablo 3. I see this as a major effort to make the game more accessible to new or infrequent players. Personally, I REALLY want more depth, but I understand the business behind why it is so simple.
-
If I like a game a lot, then I play it a lot. If I don't like a game, I don't play it.
-
1 RespuestaEditado por Pheonix: 8/19/2014 9:56:01 AMIt doesn't take an MLG quickscope tryhard to look at a gun and think "hey, there big numburs on dis gun." Or "whoa, dis gun shoot gude."
-
So I guess your definition of a casual is a moron that can't learn the mechanics of an RPG?
-
call of duty ghosts
Lol of duty: jokes*
that random in halo 3 who spoiled the campaign secrets while playing mutiplayer.
>Not playing through campaign first in a game and complaining about it being spoiled.
-
11 RespuestasI don't think they care if they scare away the causal audience, as long as they fork over 60 bucks for the game. And then they realize this game isn't for them, it doesn't matter what they do at that point lol.
-
I think you are overthinking this. For example the weapons. you will lvl it up automatically while using it and you can decide if you like it or not. you can pick from some special effects or weapon stats and optimize it to your personal style. I dont think that this is alot harder to understand for new players than the attachment system is CoD. I also dont think that casual just want big signs saying "use this gun, its the best" about the "keeping casuals away from secrets".....I dont really know what you are talking about. So new players will not know as much as hardcore players that play 16 hours a day? of course not, and not every hardcore gamer will tell other what he found or discovered. Thats what you got the internet and youtube for :)
-
Everyone is free to play at their own pace, grind gear at their own pace. And The Crucible for the most part is a balanced instance that removes advantages of gear. (With the exception of special events like the Iron Banner.) So hardcore players may find an exotic or legendary piece of gear that has some cool upgrades or some higher stats. But Damage and defense will be balanced for more fair fights. Of course theres always going to be someone better than you but the "hardcore" players wont just be unkillable gods walking around.
-
I like how some people seem to think they are masters in all things Destiny, when the game hasn't even been released. :D
