Too Many Quantity over Quality Clans

It's funny how many clans seem to have no other concern besides getting as many members as they possibly can. When I first started mine, sure I was trying to get members, but I wasn't just taking anyone and now, at a little more than 50 members, I'm more focused on getting to know them and making sure they're all connected before recruiting too many more. It's really bad when someone posts a question about their clan, and they get 5 recruiters with generic messages saying "join our clan" and ignoring the posters question. I've been trying to personally connect with all of my members and even with just 50 it isn't super easy. What is the endgame with these clans that want 1000 members and do they expect to last? I suppose they will last but like the title of the post says quantity over quality. I made a Twitter page for our clan, and this is kind of like all the twitter profiles I see whose feeds are overrun with "Follow Trains" and just care about getting followers whether they know or interact with them at all. I'm not concerned with anyone's business other than my own, to each his own, but I was just bored this morning and thought I would share my thoughts and see what other people had to say about this.

  • Most clans here have 0 experience Being a clan and bassically are just a group of fpsers. Still looking around for a small guild (15members or so) which consists of proven experienced raiders going for world firsts/server firsts etc (wow/everquest/lineage etc). Guilds with 1000+ members....get real.

  • This is why I joined my clan. We're small (about 24 of us, 18 of whom are on ps4 I believe, others on the one). The ps4 recruitment is closed now because the leader wants it small but with a strong core. I joined (and by joined I mean applied and interviewed) because I wanted a clan that was small but filled with good players, not just randoms who might quit in less than a month and can't play for shit. I like seeing people who get this. Kudos to you sir, and good luck with your clan.

    • Agree with this. Totally worth taking the time to get to know everyone in your clan. I'd been missing out on quite a few interesting and crazy chats for the first few days of being made a member. Glad I had some encouragement to jump in and ride the Destiny wave, as it's meant to be.

It all comes down to player management, if you have 100 members that are just numbers on Bungies website then obviously it will be classed as an inactive clan. . If you have 100 members that are active, talking to each other regularly through the forums , PSN and anything else your clan has set up and trying to stay connected with each other. This is a clan that will work well with each other. It's very easy to have a small clan and have them all connected, which is fine. However there is nothing wrong with a big guild with an active community that stands strong.

      • I agree. If you don't want to be another statistic, join me. Add me on PS3/PS4 Shinigami-sama-1 I only want a crew of 20 to 30 players that can get along great and split up in teams for endgame raids, exploration, and wrecking our competition in PVP. Join if you are interested. Thank you and see you soon!

I agree, I believe that's why they created the alliance system in the first place so people would not have huge clans like that. Having a large group of randoms doesn't seem like a real clan to me. I feel that they would never truly work together as a whole B/C no one really knows each other. In the other hand a smaller group of people that know each other would have more corporation and accomplishments.

            • I would personally like my clan to have around 15-30 people in it. I prefer to keep a tight-nit group rather than a large cluster of strangers. With a smaller group, I feel like you can get involved. You can even go as far as assigning roles or responsibilities to certain members. However, I have yet to recruit my 1st member, as it's only a day old, but have been working hard! Sorry to ramble on, I wish everyone luck with their clans! • That's what I have been doing with my clan. I would stop recruiting at a certain number to let everyone get to know eachother before opening recruitment up again to more players. I don't plan on having a large clan, I would probably set a permanent cap at 50 players. So far so good though, got about 30 dedicated members that all get along and talk to each other. I'll take that over a 100 quantity clan any day.

            • Well other than friends and friend's friends the rest is just about fleshing things out. I'm not too concerned because I'm not a big PvPer and really just want a pool to raid with. I'll kick/add as time goes on but for someone like me if I be friend someone through the whole process that's cool but I am in no way seeking out friends beyond the superficial level of playing the game together.

            • Completely agree with you Glenross. I had a member ask me about where I wanted to take the clan in terms of size, and this is what I said. "It's difficult to tell at this point (Asking how big I wanted the clan to get). What determines whether or not we know each other is the activeness of the members. For the moment we don't have much conversation going on between us, which I hope will change once the beta lands. Though I can say that I know a handful of clan members from before the clan was formed so we will already have a decent start to that "family feel" that I want. I would like to have 50 or so members who know each other in the end for the record. I've been in clans where it was possible for 100 people to know each other, its just a matter of activity." Long story short: I want active members more than a large clan size.

            • In a clan if you don't know everyone else the clan is too big. My 2 cents.

            • I was in a clan in COD and there wasn't a whole lot of communication between the members. I can't even remember a time when we were called together to play in any matches. At times I ran across other members in the same lobby and there was nothing but silence. There were a couple that I played with that showed promise but that was few and far between. Others, I didn't know who they were and they didn't know who I was, aside from the clan tag. Ever since then I've been weary of clans because of the lack of leadership and not knowing anything about my team members other than a KD ratio. Smaller, more organized clans seem to be the way to go, but I haven't find any that have peeked my interest. I haven't given up hope. I just need to find the right one that fits

              • My clan has two members. Our goal is twelve members and we are actually making sure people are cool, have a mike, cooperate, and are skilled. Used to always have a solid 100 friends on xbox. When you have that many friends it becomes a chore to be good friends with more than 5. I left xbox with 2 good friends. One actually came to ps4 with me and the other stayed because of his little brother and competitive cod.

              • I agree with you. My group only has 30 members and currently on 13 of them have become clan mates because they are more active on the game than they are in the forums. I probably know more than half of them personally if not 70% of them. A few of the guys have signed up just because they like the name or idea of clan that is willing to take a hardcore gamer or a casual game and just have ppl they can play and communicate with. I"m couldn't imagine having a clan that ranges to 1000 ppl. I'd be fine if I had 30-50 members in the clan and even then, the worst part about it is you'll be hard pressed to play with every member.

              • I'd also really love to join a clan as well, however there are too many (even if I'm just looking for PS4 ones), and am not sure where to begin. In the past, with other MMOs, I'll join a decently sized clan with a history (from playing previous games), but they end up just having less people over time. Also, I'd think voice chat would be great... Except when you get that one guy who is pretty much intolerable in not only the way he speaks but in also what he says...

                • Me personally I think having 50-1000 clan members are kind of overrated as well as over kill, if you look at how this game currently played out in the beta, some of these missions are only 3-6 man fire teams, so having 50+ clan members is mainly for show and tell... To be honest if I had 3-6 solid dedicated players that communicate often and I knew and understood there playing style... I wouldn't need 50 based on the PVP so far 6 players is the cap and If there's a 10-12 man cap then I would recruit more... But other than that having 50 players, you wouldn't even get to play with everyone of them... Then they would become wasted space... Quality over Quantity will always be King in this instance... Get to know your key core players that you play and grind with everyday then branch out...

                • Good point. I took the time today to post a whole page of where I want my Group/Clan to be. Ive been getting positive responses from my members It started off as an open social experiment. I didn't think it would grow but Im happy it did. Soon we will be a dominating Clan! You have to have something that will bring members together. Mine was to have gamers in the state of Florida unite. Though it took a while to see it grow, my main concern was the participation of each member. Why have 1000 members but only a few are involved.
