There were many unexplained things in BL2 that you had to find out either through picking up hints, or doing the much smaller side quests.Perhaps we are gonna have to do the same for Destiny, it just kinda adds to the game. Who's to say that we actually played every mission in Old Russia anyways? Those could just be a few simple missions bungie released to demonstrate the game. I bet if all those plot holes were filled during the beta, you'd be here bitching about how the whole plot was given away in the beta.
