I think it should be required in elementary school. Kids should be required to know and recite the pledge so they know where they come from and what the United States is about. I stopped saying it in high school but I still remember every word. We still played the anthem though. What do you think?

Yes, I said the Pledge of Allegiance through middle school but I never said that anti-commy "Under God" shit-part they added in the 50's. I stopped saying it all together in high school. A few buddies and I got into big trouble for refusing to stand up during the Pledge of Allegiance a couple times. However, it should not be required. It should be optional, unless you're in a special administrative area (such as a military base), but I don't feel like talking at length about the nuances of such matters. In short: They shouldn't be forced to the Pledge of Allegiance.

2 RespuestasWhy should they have to say it? You know, freedom and all that jazz that Americans constantly rave about.

Not until they're old enough to understand what it actually means.

I never minded, what I did not like was the Texas pledge. Although, saying them never bothered me
-
They should all be required to take the pledge or GTFO.

4 RespuestasThey should have a moment where people do it, but not make it required. The problem is, most American teens are too lazy to stand...I remember one time, a kid got sent to the principal's office for not standing. The teacher that sent him started cussin' him out for not being grateful, telling him to get out of his country if he doesn't like it.

1 RespuestaIt feels weird for people who immigrate to the U.S. When I moved to Texas I had to learn the Texas Pledge and the U.S pledge. I stood up with everyone and showed respect, but I didnt recite the words. Coming from Canada it just felt weird. I have nothing against the U.S. My family is getting our citizenship sometime this year but it will still be weird. I do 100% support the troops though!

All of these people saying 'it's not the land of the free anymore' need to go over seas and see how bad other countries have it, then maybe all of you bitches will quit whining.
-
"I pledge my allegiance to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" Oh wait, no, forget we aren't ruled by the EDL
-
No because it is false we no longer live in the land of the free and, a lot more people are atheist now so we are no long one nation under god so no.

Here in Canada, we just do an anthem and get in with the day.

I think that it should be said, but it should not be required. Building patriotism and social unity can be both a dangerous and beneficial thing. Too much, and nationalism causes trouble, too little, and anarchy ensues. According to various social theories, increasing one's feelings of belonging (patriotism includes this) you reduce the likelihood of them committing crimes.

1 RespuestaHaving a bunch of children mindlessly swear fealty to a flag every day is fairly creepy. Not to mention the original salute.

7 RespuestasEditado por Y SO REACH BETA: 6/26/2014 10:20:08 PMChanting words over and over again as a routine with all your peers around you to instill a sense of obligation is indoctrination 101. So, no, I do not agree with it. I'd also like to clarify that I do not think it is some subversive plot to instill a sense of obedience or any other inane conspiracy. However it came about, it is still indoctrination.

3 RespuestasYes. I'd expect the same from other countries that have pledges.
