There are few games I have looked forward to as much as Destiny, however, the alpha has given me significantly more cause for concern, than excitement.
What, I can’t play with my spouse?
There is no way for me to play this game with my wife. Since the game is asking for a reasonably high investment of time, much like an MMO, it’s one game that I really would want to play with my wife.
Okay, it’s not entirely true to say that it’s impossible to play with my wife, it’s possible, and would require the following:
1) A new gaming set up of a second PS4, TV, and PSN+ subscription. So to play with my wife, we are probably looking at about an investment of $900-1000
This isn’t reasonable and Bungie is AWARE that people who live together like to play together (if the local multiplayer in Halo is to be believed anyway)
So, this game specifically prevents siblings, spouses or room-mates that share a PS4 from ever playing together, even if they (like us) have other consoles like PS3s and Xbox 360s etc.
This is a very poor position for a multiplayer game. Local Co-Op can’t really happen, so this might be enough to cause me just not to want to have the game since I would never play it enough solo to justify it.
In the Alpha, the game world was shallow and mostly dead
While gorgeous looking, the whole world felt like it was all looks and no substance. Doors are all mostly dummies that cannot be interacted with. The environment is invulnerable to all things. The spawning rotation of enemies is so predictable that players around me literally farmed the dropship and mowed down the enemies as they landed.
This stretches further still. And while I was playing the game, I kept finding myself comparing it to Borderlands. This may not seem entirely fair, the scale of Destiny is hoping to expand significantly beyond that of Borderlands, but at this point, it’s doing so by stretching itself very thin.
Borderlands fills their game world with NPCs, interesting environments that you can interact with, and more. Old Russia is pretty, but very boring.
By the way, could the ghost have been voiced any more blandly? I get it’s a robot thing, but when I hear that voice work,… ugh, just not exciting. The directing leaves a lot to be desired.
The Experience Point Grind
The missions are bad… they are repetitive, and poorly thought out in terms of adding vibrancy to this world that they plan to persist for a full decade. You have no real reason to want to do the missions outside of grinding the experience to get from level 4 to level 6 where your first “dungeon” opens up (and bounties, but we will get to those).
A story-based mission that says “hey go do these 10 things for us in Old Russia” at least would give SOME level of reason to explore the mostly empty region. But even that level of immersion is missing.
A dungeon by any other name…
At level 6, you get to jump in to a matchmaking system that puts you with 2+ other people to enter a strike – which is essentially a dungeon. You have a number of objectives and boss fights to get through to achieve the final goal.
The first such strike was “Devil’s Lair” … And I can’t say it wasn’t fun, but wow, not at all the experience to sell me on the whole concept.
Tip: Do NOT create dungeons where an experienced player can just run through ignoring enemies leaving inexperienced players to fall prey of the enemies that were aggroed by the run through. Force the team to deal with all the enemies and move forward at a controlled pace. The “speed run” people aren’t going to like this, but there are many play styles and run-and-gun will be the only viable one in the way the game is currently designed. I, for example, am very much a sniper-style player. I love surveying an environment, picking off enemies. I don’t like running and gunning in FPS – this play style should not be punished by game design. (it’s worth noting that 2 of the boss fights did reward this style… drawing the attention to accurate shots and then jumping out of sight was very much what the mechanics were for those fights)
Next up, the boss fights. The large walker boss in Devil’s Lair… what a snooze fest. Horrible design. While I did appreciate that my style worked nicely for this fight (and the final fight) by virtue of the fact that I could pick off the occasional adds that did spawn from my vantage point… but enemies where the “challenge” is knocking away a billion hit points without falling asleep is just not a good design.
The laser-grid hacking event is hectic, and perhaps the most fun, but also incredibly rough on people who aren’t overly skilled FPS players. The sheer numbers of enemies, the brutal damage output, makes this fight one where a strong FPS might be forced to carry a couple of less capable FPS players. This should be considered. The fights should not be too susceptible to a group being carried by a veteran, and a truly frustrating experience for the newer FPS players. Ironically, Halo might often be a game which your players come from due to the name and they may well have played Halo for the story – meaning that their FPS skills may be average at best!
It’s interesting to note that Left 4 Dead 2 seems to have found this balance. Certainly a veteran can completely dominate a map, but the AI director can speed up or slow down enemies to ensure that every fight is competitive but not overly frustrating. I wonder if such a system would make sense in Destiny. If a group is just annihilating the first wave, perhaps the second wave hits harder. If there are struggles vs. the first wave, then the second wave might not escalate in the same way.
Crucible, and the potent placement of PvP…
I admit this happily. I don’t like PvP. It’s rarely balanced, often a complete clone of a previous experience and given far too much importance in a game…
I am a starcraft 2 player btw, occasionally mess around with MOBAs like Heroes of the Storm, and am a competitive Magic player. So competition isn’t a problem for me, it’s specifically PvP.
That first paragraph there can DIRECTLY be applied to Destiny. It’s poorly balanced, it’s uninspired (the maps are not only generic, they are generic with the addition of game-breaking elements like a gunship which just shreds players in a single shot) and is overly important to the game.
I am not sure if all the PvP experiences in Crucible are 6v6. But the map I got was about capping bases and building points for every second your team controlled one of the 3 bases. I can’t say for sure, but I would guess that we will have capture the flag variants, and many more of the traditional PvP fare.
Crucible is intended to be a very large part of your experience with Destiny. Certainly you could just completely ignore it, and should I play the final version, I may very well do exactly that, but just based on what I have seen, they seem to expect that at least half of your time with the game might be spent doing PvP.
Half the bounties are dedicated to Crucible. Many of the vendors reward you for doing PvP.
The justification for this PvP btw… you are “honing” the skills of your guardian. If this were true, it might be a neat addition to the game. Effectively running 12-player strikes where the objective is your opponents, not some boring boss fights. Assaulting a base (so 6 attackers and 6 defenders), with specific “training” inspired mechanics. Something of this type.
There is place for PvP in this game – but the traditional PvP maps from most every other game means that Destiny is asking you to believe they will somehow do PvP better than the dozens of eSports quality FPS games out there. And it doesn’t and likely never will.
Bounties? More like life goals!!
Good god, are there some plans that these bounties are going to be daily things? Because if so, they are insane. When I first saw bounties I thought, COOL, maybe there will be some objectives in the game world which I can hunt down – a mini boss, or whatever. Nope, these are just more grind… extraordinarily time-consuming grinds if truth be told. Kill 10 elite dudes from each faction? You can camp their spawn, along with most everyone else in your area, I suppose, but that’s anything but fun!
Lower the rewards, lower the investment in time and make these things so they are something you might actually DO on a daily basis.
Maybe even include… I dunno,… say a bounty! Some named enemy who spawns in the world somewhere. Perhaps even make it so you might need a couple of people to take him down…
World events… or, how I ran away from a thing that could not be killed…
Okay, these are real time event things where say, a walker drops from the sky and we all have to band together to bring it down…
Can’t say a thing about them because they were made utterly impossible by the fact that alpha was so empty. 5 of us entered a futile battle with the thing, learned pretty quickly we had no hope, and wandered off. This isn’t a fair test of these events. I am sure with a populated world they might be awesome things to get involved with.
However, it does bring up one possible “adjustment” that could be made to these. Could they perhaps be scaled? If there are only 10 people in the area, spawn it at a weaker setting with lower rewards… if 8 of the 10 show up to kill it, it might actually be beatable? I don’t think it’s that important honestly, because if my observations were typical, we just mostly ignored the events…
Sure, it’s just alpha…
Almost certainly the game beyond level 8 (the Alpha cap) may be much, much more immersive and better. However, the 5 level sample we have currently been privy to does little to engender much confidence that the game hasn’t stretched itself far too thin.
Superficial, no innovations in gameplay, just a very pretty FPS with delusions of grandeur. What a disappointment.

Simple as this if you don't like it don't get the game, get something that fills your needs to play Split Screen with your wife something like Knack or Little Big Planet. Because every MMO based game is never going to be Split Screen.

1 RespuestaYou should write a follow up review of your take on the beta. I feel as though some of your points are valid and poke some huge holes in Destiny's gameplay. I would love to know your take on Beta.

2 RespuestasThis guy knows his stuff. Un like most of you guys who don't understand hes actually a true gamer. He makes highly valid points. There is a huge difference between playing alot of games and playing alot of good games.

Well all i can say it you have to let some games slip by to the keeper and move onto the next.

10 RespuestasWhy in the hell would you write such a long post about a game that you obviously don't like and will not enjoy? Just saying.

3 RespuestasYou do understand that this is a BETA right.

8 RespuestasEditado por Donald Valverde: 7/21/2014 12:27:47 PMI'll be honest as well, I basically skimmed over your post. Why? Because you're complaining to complain. Find me one MMO that is on console, that you have split-screen on... Even if you managed to find it, chances are the game sucks. I've played several MMOs especially in Beta and Alpha phases. I can hands down tell you this has been the most enjoyable, smooth, beautiful experience I've had during a beta.....EVER! Once you reach level 8, does the game feel empty?! Sure, its capped at level eight! Your lucky they let you get that far. Your mentioning about instances, is utterly ridiculous. Instances are always repetitive. It sounds as though you've never played an MMO. I mean is there take on an MMO FPS "unique"?! Well no. It does have base line aspects of an MMO. If not it wouldn't be an M..M...O.... But, between the animated load screens, the sick graphics, and smooth gameplay....this game rocks! Stop finding reasons to complain.

Please notice, that if Bungie would fix just first problem (absence of split screen), rest will essecially fix itself: Huge, open, empty world will be much more interesting to wander around if I can do it with someone (I mean someone I can see, speak with and touch). That's why walking in e.g. park with someone is always more pleasant than walking alone. Repetitive, boring missions will become much more interesting as well, when you can share it with someone. In Halo ODST/Reach Bungie made this Firefight mode, which is just shooting waves of enemies. Boring as hell, but since 2 or 3 or 4 people can play together, it became very popular. Also when you have some serious challanges in dungeons or events, still there is no more effective teamplay, than when you're sharing couch and TV with someone. Playing with (mostly random) people online isn't even close to that. Absence of split screen in Crucibile I won't even comment. By one stupid mistake (absence of split screen) Bungie downgraded Destiny from game for everyone, into something useless. But hey! There are kids in here who loves to have whole TV just for themselves, so they wander around, watching ruins and grass and skyboxes... Deej literally said that's what Destiny's suppose to be. Too bad Bungie made all this hype in last couple of years.

I read the entire thing and would like to say that you had a lot of good points I played beta, and I think that a lot of things so still be changed many of which you listed above.

I agree with alot of your points. Even in the Beta these things still occur.

Pessimistic much?

4 RespuestasEditado por Vangelion: 6/17/2014 2:37:22 PMI feel you have some valid points but some of the concerns you have are ultimately up to the player... Co-op..agree 100% My wife is already grumbling about not being able to play..has bungie commented on PS4 and PS3 compatibility at least? I can live with it if I don't have to buy a new system Boss fights: This is up to the player...I mean honestly you can sit back and plink a boss for 20 minutes..I did this..got bored..switched weapons and stepped it up a notch. closed the gap, stayed in it's rear, avoided it's close range AoE attack, hid when I needed energy and took it toe to toe. Not that sniping it was cheating but if there is a way to exploit a boss and its boring its up to you the player whether or not to use it. Speed Runners This is a player issue again, realistically I think they're hoping you form strike teams with people you know. Often they've talked about collaborating with friends and planning and it's more enjoyable if you do, and this is true. Pickup squads in any game (warframe, FF XIV) are never as good as a group of friends who talk, plan, and compliment each other's strengths and weaknesses. World Events I had to run from a couple, others were tough not impossible, some were easy..seems certain world events take place in certain location. Some areas were higher level than others but as you stated the population was low in Alpha Dead World Again this is a player issue, there were certain locations in the world that are heavily populated with enemies, others which were sparse. But everytime I free roamed I found a new location, yes there are some areas you can't enter be it by design or just due to Alpha but I don't know a single game that grants you freedom in EVERY possible room crevice or crack imaginable. But I enjoyed exploring, be able to take a moment to look around, explore, and find stuff, then see a enemy in the distance and come up with a plan. It offers a change of pace, I don't always want to be white knuckled and stressed although I did fall prey to being passive and running into a fallen ambush. Conclusion A lot of the issue is Destiny gives you the player a lot of options and a lot of control, there are some flaws (foots steps were pissing me off as the sound effects didn't really match the action and threw me off). The complaints of the ghost voice, but notice there are slots for the ghost..possible different AI personalities with diff ghosts maybe? even though the voice didn't bother me to be honest. But theres a lot out there that is giving you the player the ability to stay within a area you enjoy, exploring, fire fights, big bosses, pvp, or you can go outside the box. The one short story line they provided gave you a more linear approach, the free roam was just that.

9 RespuestasEditado por SoloPopo: 6/17/2014 4:47:55 PMFrom one Starcraft player to another. "I don’t like running and gunning in FPS" - Then Bungie's shooter's aren't for you. "Could [bosses] perhaps be scaled?" - Absolutely not. Every enemy you'd encounter in every space of the game would be put on easy mode, and progressing your character would have no real benefit, since they'd always adjust themselves to your level. Skyrim did this, and I hated it. Scaling difficulty and Open-world RPG MMO inspired games do not mix. "Bounties? More like life goals!!" - Bungie designed Destiny to keep players playing for years to come. If you're looking for a game you can "beat," then Destiny is not for you. "What? I can't play with my spouse?" -- I was also disappointed by this, but I have my fingers crossed for the final release. "In the Alpha, the game world was shallow and mostly dead" - I would like to see a little more content added to the game world as well, but it is by no means shallow or dead. "World events… or, how I ran away from a thing that could not be killed…" - I've beaten every beatable boss in the game by myself a dozen times on Legend difficulty. Get better. Bungie's fans have been tearing through Halo campaigns for the last decade because the skills you hone in the campaign directly translate into PvP, as the enemies shield functionality is similar to player's. What you call a "grind," I call being rewarded for doing what I was already doing in Bungie's games. You'd rather have every boss and hidden mini-boss in the game crumble at your feet for hardly trying? Sounds real fun. "Crucible, and the potent placement of PvP… " - I was at first disappointed by PvP as well, but it wasn't until I really learned what I was doing that it become very enjoyable. "Certainly you could just completely ignore it, and should I play the final version [I will.]" - HA, what significance would all those weapons and gear have without the Crucible? What's the significance of honing your skills in the open game world, for nothing? The Crucible brought my Destiny experience alive; it's what kept me constantly pursuing that better weapon or piece of gear. "The Experience Point Grind" - If playing through the game is "grinding," then it's the most fun I've ever had doing it. You seem too focused on the game's goals. I just explored for hours and hours and had a blast. I completed many quests, but I never made them my primary focus, even in Devil's lair. Based on everything you've said, it sounds like you just don't like the type of game Bungie has made. You're trying to squeeze the game into your own little convenient box. But, Destiny is so much more than that, and at the risk of sounding rude, it wasn't made for people like you; it was made for the millions of people who played millions of hours of Bungie's previous campaigns, simply for the fun of it, despite the fact that almost nothing was earned for doing so. If you aren't willing to get good at the game, you will not experience what it has to offer. Bungie's shooters have always been that way, and that's why they are better than your standard run of the mill shooter: you get rewarded for your success, and punished for your failures; exactly the way it should be, and it is very unlikely that Bungie will compromise their game because some people fail to put the necessary time into it to truly appreciate it, despite Activision's notorious influence.

Editado por Koldraxon: 7/19/2014 10:46:31 AMSeveral segments can be agreed to but I haven't even tasted the thing yet, so my opinion is uncertain. What I'm certain of, is NO ARMOR CUSTOMIZATION. When they do release it, they will need to do at LEAST a day's worth of patching to try and make it a BIT better. The Beta is too confined from my view, they won't be able to get ANY DATA that could at all help with the final build, since they stated they'd treat this as a FULL PRODUCT LAUNCH. I have seen NOTHING like a 'FULL PRODUCT LAUNCH'. Activision/Bungie are hoping their creation lives from pure Roleplaying ingame, because if that's all that holds the game up, then I am gravely disappointed (but will play, regardless). The PS's "Beta", from Youtube viewpoint, looks more like an Alpha; no time for any new content, just an open Alpha with a few bug fixes. Oh Bungie/Activision, where have you gone so wrong? (Destiny isn't a true MMO unless all locations are traversable by foot/land vehicle (apart from the different worlds, though) & all players playing can meet in one place.)
-
1 RespuestaStop moaning if you don't like it then you don't like it. Big Deal. You don't have to tell everyone about it.
-
Oh boy..... Haha I agreed with a few points . Not being able to just run and gun through the beginning of the strike is a must cuz u can easily skip those first few minutes easy and it annoyed me a lot when I saw people just run ahead and leave me behind . Quite annoying I must say..... The whole bounty aspect is right , I think they should have those *challenges in a seperate category , and have bounties in the way you want them... Or at least similar... But let's be honest here they have already stated that "we are making a game that we want to play" I feel as If they want this game to be challenging and maybe beyond that *almost impossible ! Because that's a main premise of the story , we are few guardians left on earth ... We have been beaten down and almost stamped out! We are fighting an almost impossible fight! But that's what makes it fun!! They have stated " you will fail" I personally want that !! I'm sick of these games today (unlike dark souls) that cater to people who want a game that holds ur hand throughout the whole experience!
-
Lol it's just alpha bro
-
i agree it needs split-screen!
-
The absence of splitscreen is a massive hole in this game.
-
I didn't get to play the alpha but I saw alot of game play. I do agree with some of your points. I saw the sheer impossibility of the bosses and enemies, but me for me I liked how impossible they seemed. If it was scaled down a bit more I wouldn't mind but I think that in the beta they will rectify the issues you so elegantly addressed. Its nice to see intelligent feedback. I enjoy reading posts such as these because they help give those without a console much needed insight on the less liked mechanics of the game. Thank you.
-
not even gonna bother reading that wall. Anyone thinking about playing destiny pre order it and play the beta, dont waste your time reading things like this. Play it and see how you feel about it yourself, why should you take the word of another man
-
I have to agree with a lot of your opinions, I don't know what I was quite expecting with Destiny, maybe a more polished game, its big, its nice but something is missing. I was hyped up for this game but now, for me its the Master Chief collection and next gen GTA5....Destiny can wait

21 RespuestasYou've written a well-thought out and cohesive review of the alpha, but I completely disagree. Playing with your wife is an issue that results from the fact that split screen requires the console to render the game twice which will not happen. Cross-generation/cross-platform play is not possible due to Microsoft and Sony, so what do you expect Bungie to do? The exploration I can somewhat see but I'm sure was stripped down somewhat to hide the story. Even then, I didn't care, I was having a blast exploring new areas and fighting enemies. To me, it was no grind because I had fun with it. The missions after a while are boring, but we haven't seen more so I reserve judgement on that until the full game. The Strike was amazing and required strategy and thought. Had you communicated with your team it would have been easier. I paired with randoms five times on legendary and only used the mic once. Surviving waves wasn't easy, but with strategy was completely doable. I was paired with a lower level player doing the strike for the first time and I showed him two spots where he wouldn't be rushed and could take care of stronger enemies. He said the only other FPS he had played was Killzone SF, but he did fine. The tank was fun every time because if you missed the dodge you would die. I enjoyed myself thoroughly during it and the boss fight. The last point I'll address because I'm tiring of writing this is that the PvP is skill based and it sounds like you are lacking. I now consistently get a 1.5-2.0 switching up guns every couple games to level up my guns. Headshots are important, moving in three dimensions is important, ammo management is important, supers are important, vehicles can be stopped (turrets exist for a reason, you can hit the driver not the vehicle), and there are many ways to approach combat. It is balanced if you know what there is to manage. In short, as others may say "git gud."

Something tells me you just enjoy a good cry and you're still buying the game.
