I challenge you to come up with a psychopathological definition capable of including the personality disorders and other mental illnesses, which doesn't include being transgender. I can't do it - although it is 3.10am.
No, I'm not advocating the position that being transgender is a disorder.

No, you can't have a get out clause at the end of your sentence which gives being transgender some sort of exclusivity
Because having a gender isn't a disorder. If we're talking on a strictly mental sense, there's no real difference whether you're cis or no, now is there? Ming=blown

Liberals?

The concept of gender and sexuality lie on a spectrum, as does your biological sex. Simply because any of these things don't match up in the way they do for most other people doesn't make it a disorder. This is like saying that redheads have a disorder because their hair color lies on a different part of the spectrum of natural hair colors than does most people's hair color.

It used to be, it no longer is because those views were outdated and people in the global medical world are more competent than their predecessors.

The bait... its... its... drawing me in!!! Must... resist...

1 RespuestaArgh this is Psychology bait <.< I won't though, because it isn't. Garaa summed it up well, it used to be considered one and was taught as such (To me as well) but it's a little more complex than that. People who are suffering/unhappy because of it could be classed as ill, and the treatment would be to make it so they aren't suffering because of it. Whether that's getting them a reassignment or helping them accept who they are depends on the person/situation/cause etc etc. I haven't looked at this topic in a long time though and the stuff I did know turned out to be a load of outdated bullcrap (Mostly at least) I'm just going to leave it though because I need to get on with my work and my arms are already killing me from typing <.<

Since sex =/= gender, that's all that matters. It's not usually a choice but change be changed through a choice so it also doesn't fall under any psychological disorders, diseases, or illnesses.

They are messed up people with identity issues (such as you people who care a lot about how your character looks in a game) that people/companies can make money off of by giving them the looks of their identity that they care for

From the first line of wikipedia
A mental disorder, also called a mental illness or psychiatric disorder, is a mental or behavioral pattern or anomaly that causes either suffering or an impaired ability to function in ordinary life (disability), and which is not developmentally or socially normative
Well thinking you're the other gender doesn't really cause suffering or an impaired ability to function in life, but is definitely not a part of the social norm

I don't know and I don't care. Just let them be.

2 RespuestasBecause it isn't 1950 anymore.
-
Editado por Hawke: 5/22/2014 6:13:32 PMBecause at the end of the day, from a purely scientific perspective, it is an illness. I'm not implying it's a bad thing, regardless of my opinion on it. (For all you hypersensitive types, no offense intended.)
-
I personally would classify it as a disorder, as it produces biological negative effects in the form of body disphoria.
-
It would hurt people's feelings.
-
5 Respuestastransgender is sin
-
It's because it's controversial, meta. Trying to classify something that's controversial is just asking for bullshit to happen. Remember that time way back when the US wouldn't declare the war they were fighting an actual war because they knew if they did, shit would get real? It's that kind of thing.
Same as Meta, I'm not advocating either side, just making a point.
-
It may be and it may not be, but it isn't "wrong" in any way. I don't care how it's classified as long as they can be respected for who they are.
-
That's transvestitism

Did you get banned once or a while ago?

4 RespuestasYou seem to think trans people are under some delusion. They're not.

Editado por Forever Berg: 5/22/2014 4:35:55 PMIt's a brain condition, not a mental illness. Denying it is just denying the truth, and honestly classifying a group as too weak to handle a truth is just as bad as mocking them. And "brain condition" doesn't have to be negative. It's the brain not coordinating with the biology of the body.
-
12 RespuestasIt is indeed a disorder/mental illness but it really doesn't matter considering it can be 'cured'.
-
simply being transgender is not a mental disorder. the struggle with gender identity that transgender people encounter, gender dypshoria, is a mental disorder.
-
10 RespuestasI got banned for saying that it was, so no, by the Liberal moderators' definition, it isn't.

It used to be considered an illness.
