“A gun is an offensive weapon used to intimidate and show power,” he asserted, explaining to the audience that police officers don’t carry weapons to defend themselves, but to do their job in a “safe and effective manner.”
What do you think of this? Obviously the comments are a shitstorm, with people assuming he means cops try to scare people. IMO, he's just saying it's meant to intimidate criminals to prevent situations from escalating. I'd be a lot less likely to attack someone that I knew carried a gun and was trained to use it.

May not agree with this guy on everything, but here he's over 9000% right.

1 Respuesta
IMO, he's just saying it's meant to intimidate criminals to prevent situations from escalating. I'd be a lot less likely to attack someone that I knew carried a gun and was trained to use it.
the problem with that statement is that not only are the average big city PD "underfunded" , they're also woefully under trained. case in example: a couple years ago the NYPD shot at one suspect who killed his former boss and then himself on the empire state building and hit 9 innocent people. they then proceeded to brag about being highly trained and later revealed to be mostly only having only mandatory training 2 hours a year because the idea of training was politically offensive.

1 RespuestaLol California. I wouldn't trust anyone from California with a water gun much less an actual gun. I'm awaiting the day they're no longer a part of the US.

2 RespuestasWho hires the police in my state? Like seriously... who allows these dumbasses to have these careers?

Oh really?

They can be both.

I think a better word would be "deterrent."

3 RespuestasI agree with him. Guns by their mere presence intimidate other people because guns have a single purpose, to kill things. People carry guns in the same way countries have nukes. Both are meant to intimidate others with their existence, because of the violence they could cause.

He's not wrong

I can see where this guy is coming from, it's sort of like how commanders in the renaissance, where they would carry swords and not use them. It's more a show of power than for use, but in not saying I agree with this guy.

When is that earthquake coming to make California a island? Can't stand sharing the same landmass with those irradiated idiots

1 RespuestaEditado por Enlightened One: 5/1/2014 9:22:37 PMSo police have guns. Does this mean their purpose is to be offensive, intimidate and show power?
-
Well, it seems folks don't like California much.

Bad choice of words but that's about it.

Editado por Meta Cognition : 5/1/2014 11:08:19 PMBecause offense and defense is a black and white dichotomy, right?

15 RespuestasPIG COPS TRYING TO FORCE BOTCHED LOBOTOMIES ON HALO WARS MIRROS INCOHERENT BOOTY. ... I would say a defensive weapon is a non-lethal one, like a truncheon/nightstick or a tazer. An offensive weapon can be used in a defensive manner but it's still used to kill/maim rather than just incapacitate. *this doesn't make guns bad* *this is just my own view* *feel free to sic me anyway ._.*

I think he's absolutely correct.

Editado por Walla: 5/1/2014 10:05:51 PMWell cops in most of SoCal just go around handing out traffic tickets, it's not like they even need guns most of the time.

Can any weapon be a defensive in nature? I'm under the impression that they are all designed for offensive purposes. Some just have better methods of being used to shield or block attacks. Course that applies to medieval weapons more than it does modern ones. Of course it does fly in the face of what people perceive as common sense and that indeed, some weapons are used to defend people or property. But they defend through offense or fear of offense.
