Aside from the miniscule population who are obese because of some medical condition, do you consider an obese child to be an abused child?
Why or why not?

It's child misuse. Not intentional or neglectful. The kids should be given to someone who can properly use children.

Editado por Aximu: 3/17/2014 4:41:35 AMObviously not. Obesity in regards to both children and adults could be related to socioeconomics. Don't penalize the struggling parent for buying that burger meal for 2.99 instead of a salad or organic meal that will run you twice if not triple that. It's a fact unhealthy food is cheaper than healthy food, and a lot easier to prepare. Not to mention lower income families can't afford to pay for physical recreational activities for their kids either. If they're lucky, their school will have a good PE program or pay for all the equipment for sports and other physical extracurricular activities. Simply put, people who live an unhealthy lifestyle don't do it because it's fun or cool, they do it because they can't afford to eat the healthiest thing on the market or get a member ship at some kind of fitness center. And that holds true for parents.
Obesity rates increased by 10 percent for all U.S. children 10- to 17-years old between 2003 and 2007, but by 23 percent during the same time period for low-income children (Singh et al., 2010a). This national study of more than 40,000 children also found that in 2007, children from lower income households had more than two times higher odds of being obese than children from higher income households.
I don't know if i'd classify it as abuse, but raising a child on the thought that it's alright to be obese doesn't seem like good parenting to me...i'm not saying verbally abusing the kid about their weight is a good thing either, but encouraging them to be active and teaching them about the medical risks of being too overweight would be a good thing to do. Keeping a home stocked with relatively healthy foods would also be a recommendation. But my eating habits are pretty shitty, so I can't really criticize someone's diet unless they're doing nothing but shoving junk food down their gullets all day.

1 RespuestaWhat are you gonna do? Lock the cabinets and the fridge shut so the kid can't get to the food? That's child abuse right there.
-
3 RespuestasIt really depends on the age of the child. An obese 12 year old? I don't see how that could be abuse. But an obese 4 year old? That is most definitely the responsibility of the parent and/or guardian.

Everyone who says no is a fat child
-
No it's not, but if my child were fat I'd get his/her ass in shape.
-
2 RespuestasSo basically, being poor and unable to afford healthy foods is child abuse? LOL
-
Yes it is you are basically killing them, but to be fair if the parents aren't informed correctly, you can't really blame them.
-
2 RespuestasDepends whether or not they are healthy. You can be fat and still eat good and have good health overall.
-
Indirectly, yes. Children, especially very young ones, rely on nourishment from the parent/guardian. Parents who knowingly feed their children junk are indirectly harming their kids, therefore I would categorise that as a form of abuse to a certain degree.
-
Not really. In the end it just comes down to a lack of self-control. You can (and I do) eat however much you want to of whatever you want to, but you have to be willing to balance it out with physical activity.
-
4 RespuestasLol no I see abuse as mental pain This isn't even....what? Lol
-
Interesting... Most of y'all who are saying it is abuse are at least social liberal... While the others are socially conservative. I'm conservative, but I do believe it is a form of abuse AT A CERTAIN AGE.

1 RespuestaYes. It shows the parents are neglecting proper nutrition

LOL at everyone who thinks fat kids are equal to actual abused children. Threads like this...

Yes, but not in the legal sense.

I don't know if it falls under abuse as much as it does spoiling and enabling.

2 RespuestasMy mom was crazy and fed me fast food for at least 10+ meals a week. At home i ate oven pizzas, mac n cheese, chicken nuggets and fries, and cereal. I pretty much only drank pop and for a time I was having 6 a day. We went through 3 24 packs within 2 weeks. If it wasn't for the fact our car broke down and we walked 10+ miles a day, I prolly woulda been obese. Or if I stayed with her I'd prolly be obese right now.

Eating healthy ftw

1 RespuestaEditado por CAMMCAM: 3/16/2014 10:32:03 PMYes. Over feeding your child junk is torture.
-
2 RespuestasYes. Giving my kids candy is equal to beating them over the head with a steel rod.
-
There's a threshold, obviously. 10-20lbs overweight is pushing it, but any further is child abuse. IMO
-
Not unless the kid is being forced not to exercise.
