Just curious as to your thoughts on this. The other day, I posted a thread asking for ideas for my term paper, and I decided to go with this after reading some stories about Senator Gillibrand pushing for changes to Military policy over this.
Just to quote some statements on the topic:
According to a 2011 Newsweek report, women are more likely to be assaulted by a fellow soldier than killed in combat.

The Department of Defense estimates there are about 19,000 sexual assaults in the military per year but according to the latest Pentagon statistics (2013), only 1,108 troops filed for an investigation during the most recent yearly reporting period and during that period, only 575 cases were processed

No outside audit has been conducted of the military's numbers. Of the cases processed, only 96 went to court-martial. Another investigation found that only one in five females and one in 15 males in the United States Air Force would report having been sexually assaulted by service members.

15% of female veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan who have visited a VA facility have screened positive for military sexual trauma.
2 RespuestasIt's pretty well-documented that there is.
-
Yes there are many problems like this in the us military and shockingly enough the majority of reports are about men being abused.

28 RespuestasI'm not even gonna post what I was about to. Way to many sensitive people on these forums.

5 RespuestasI've heard a few times from some of my military friends that the women would falsely report ra'pe if they were caught having sex. I'm sure some of the men would do the same but considering my friends from the military were all males, of course they wouldn't claim it the other way around.
-
14 RespuestasIf this carries over into civilian statistics, over 80% of them are considered false because of lack of evidence. Most of them are empty claims.
-
There is. It's awful.

75 RespuestasThis is why women shouldn't be in the military. Unless they are the ship's chef of course.

2 RespuestasI've heard of and seen statistics before where issues with unreported assaults would occur with women, and men, but I can't say that much can be done until we work on more rigid structure and enforcement of some things.

8 RespuestasThere's a huge sexual assault problem in the world. It will obviously carry over to any work place.

13 Respuestaslol ICY for real?

It's kind of obvious. Which makes the fact that no one is doing anything about it even worse.

9 RespuestasPSU didn't deserve to get banned.

9 RespuestasWell duh. But could it be argued that the deprivation of females, coped with large amounts of testosterone be a factor in sexual assaults?
-
Yup, but instead of actually doing something about it they just make more and more power point classes that tell men to not -blam!- women. This is why I like what those senators are trying to do in regards to changing how the military handles sexual offenses.

2 RespuestasEditado por brandorobot: 2/19/2014 10:51:50 PMI know it's an issue but I'm curious how anyone plans to solve it. The issue stems from the officers they are reporting it to not doing anything about it most of the time, or in some cases they may be the one assaulting them and they have nowhere to turn. If they can't trust that they have someone to go to then they'll just never report it.

9 RespuestasYeah, but it's mostly guy on guy. females in the military aren't the main victims.
-
4 RespuestasTo put it plainly, the Airforce set up a guy to review all cases of alleged assault, only to find out he was also guilty. It depends a lot on what assault is defined as, a commanding officer may solicit sex from a service woman and she may feel obligated to comply because she wants a promotion or increase in status. Honestly I doubt such a fuss would be made if it were female officers soliciting sex from male soldiers.
-
Yeah sadly.
-
8 RespuestasWell... even though I was coming in to say it was a massive problem, your statistics pretty much prove that.

I originally read that as Is there a Sexual Assault Program in the US Military? Whoops.
