What level of history should the teenager be studying and what should the teenager be learning in maths?
This is of course based on your opinion.

16 is one of the best times in life to be utterly stupid and one of the few times in life you can get away with it too.

3 RespuestasCan't answer that for myself yet. I'll bump this again in 2015.

18 RespuestasNothing you learn in math class past that age is even remotely useful in real life. As for history, European history is a must.

You should be smart enough to never let yourself become like the people on this website.

9 RespuestasThe average 16 year old should technically be less intelligent than in the past. Or perhaps about the same. On average.

Well, we live in a world where people can access the collective knowledge of all of humanity on a rectangle they keep in their pocket. So, very? *Pictured above: the collective knowledge of all of humanity.*

3 RespuestasI am turning 16 next Tuesday and I will tell you right now, the future is not looking bright. Compared to everyone else my age I am a god among mere mortals, from both an intellectual standpoint and an awesomeness standpoint. All we really learn is how to take a multiple choice test, not anything important like how to manage money or look for a job.

4 RespuestasEditado por Progo: 12/9/2013 11:00:56 PMHe/she should be capable of: Writing clear essays. Doing either Algebra or geometry. (pffft business math is useless compared to algebra if you want to amount to something in life) Be aware of how history dictates today's conflicts (the Northern Ireland problem being clan wars from long ago, the Middle East has been at war for the last 4k years, that Japan made -godwinslaw!- Germany look tame when they invaded China, they should know all of this) And be taught that History repeats itself ALL THE TIME. Understand the basics of biology and chemistry. (cell and atomic structure, some cosmology, basic coding, you know, science!) This is where I was at when I was 14 (except the coding), but I was home educated and started early so I had an advantage. I did suck at essays, but I blame that on the program my mom decided to use lol.

I say... Smart enough to stop talking when appropriate.

2 RespuestasAtleast pre calculus and some form of government course.

2 RespuestasI was about to come into this thread and start getting pissed off, but then I realized you were asking about courses. As a 16 year old, right now I am taking AP Calculus, English II Honors, Civics and Economics Honors, AP Computer Science, Computer Programming II Honors, Biology Honors. I would consider myself rather average when it comes to my grades and courses. These may seem good but you would be surprised by how many kids in the 14-17 age right now that are really good in school. The only thing special are the AP courses. I think I am the only Sophmore in my school with two APs. Sadly they are tanking my GPA, so it was a poor decision on my part.

Enough to live in the real world. American education does not teach its kids that. Just how to dot down symbols on a paper and know what that Tombstone meant.

5 RespuestasHe should be learning about limits and calculus and he should be able to recite the entirety of history and prehistory from memory. He should be able to analyse Shakespearian poetry in at least a billion different ways and he should be able to pee in an urinal (shy bladders are a debilitation). So yeah, I guess overly high expectations of individuals... :/

13 RespuestasHistory- The civil rights movement in SA/America. Why? So people realise what it was actually like in apartheid and it hopefully doesn't happen again. Maths- Anything that would be useful in most people's lives.

8 RespuestasI'm 14 and in Geometry, and many of my friends are in Honors Advanced Algebra. Given that we're insanely high on the learning curve, with most 14-year-olds still learning Algebra P3-P4 (Algebra 1), I'd say around Advanced Algebra, give or take a year would be a good rough estimate for the average 16-year-old's education in terms of maths. As for history, I'm not sure... Past sophomore year of high school where I live you can literally take whatever class you want as long as you can get in (if you're smart enough). There are over 20 different history classes to choose from. Science has a prerequisite here that goes from 1-2 in freshman year to 3-4 in sophomore year, then the same scenario as history/social studies plays out. Same for English, too. For languages, the learning curve is pretty even. Students take 1-2 freshman year, 3-4 sophomore year, 5-6 junior year, and then I think one or two extremely good teacher can teach a fourth year of a language.

The history of life is more important than the history of ancient wars. If you can do Algebra and Geometry at an A level, that should be good enough.

2 RespuestasWhat grade are people in when they're 16, again?

16 year is around junior year right? Because they should be learning American Government at that age. That or more in depth American history focusing on The Civil War and on (Reconstruction, Industrialization, American Exceptionalism and Imperialism).

I was a drug dealer at 16.
