What if...
Bungie's founder Jason Jones spent a part of his early life exploring parts of Earth and found out a secret mystery and ancient aliens. They told him their story/history and made him swear not to go the the media. Of course knowing something of this magnitude and not telling any one else would drive everyone crazy. So he thought up a plan. A plan to let the world know what he knew with out going to the media or completely telling the story. Through video games.
So therefore Marathon, Halo, and now Destiny are all Jason Jones way of telling the secrets of the ancient aliens he came across.
