"Lack or loss of spiritual faith" is included as a "Guidance/moral compass issue" in both of these documents under a list of risk indicators for use by "leaders at all levels" to "identify and address risky behavior or events that may lead to risky behavior, as soon as possible." This apparent character flaw is juxtaposed with such things as "lack of courage," "history of psychiatric hospitalizations," "past or current substance abuse history," and being "anti-social." In the simplest terms, it is the current official position of the United States Marine Corps that those who do not profess a religious belief or choose to leave their religion are to be considered a potential hazard to themselves and the Corps and be placed under greater scrutiny than their peers.
Are you kidding?

I like playing with marines when they train with us in Australia. Always a bucket of laughs.

This thread is a perfect example of the complete lack of reading comprehension present on b.net. Also, love the hypocrisy gentlemen. Post an article from huffpo and it can't be wrong. Fox news? It's laughed out of serious conversation. Protip: both are equally based. Don't use them as a source.

1 RespuestaBeing agnostic doesn't make me a greater hazard to myself and/or others but shit like this does.
-
1 RespuestaHonestly, it doesn't really matter. If the religious want to go to war against another religion then they can go ahead. I would rather help look for cures to diseases or be part of a colony on mars than fight in a war started by theocratic dumbasses in corrupt governments.

>score higher in spirituality than my born again Christian squadmate on the GAT Feels good to be agnostic, man.

2 RespuestasI've read a lot of the comments here in this thread, and Bnet, let me assure you that almost every single one of you is completely and utterly misunderstanding this. As is the Huffington Post. Allow me to explain, please. In the Air Force, Spiritual Faith is believed to be of the utmost importance. If you lack spiritual stability, you are far less likely to be able to handle the stress of a military life. However, almost all of you are confusing spiritual faith with religion. Spiritual stability does NOT refer to religion. Spiritual faith refers to the act of believing in something. If that 'something' is in a God or religion, then that's great. If not? All it means is that you need to believe in something. That something can range from religion to believing that your fellow airmen will be there to help you. I'm Atheist, and what this means for me is that if I do not trust my fellow Airmen to do their jobs and help me do mine, then I will not be able to function in the military whether it be in a regular job or a joint environment (which is becoming increasingly common these days). Spiritual Stability refers to believing in something, not believing in a religion. The article also talks about how people are being sent to talk to chaplains. Again, this is not about religion. Chaplains are not there to push religious beliefs, and are in fact qualified to talk about any number of beliefs from various churches. Rather, they are there as a means to give soldiers/airmen/seamen somebody to talk to when they are going through difficult periods in life. The topic of religion never even has to come up. I hope I've helped clear some things up for some of you.

So, if I wanted to join the USMC, I'd have to go back to being a Catholic, rather than a Deist? Great, looks like I'd have to live being a 13-17 year old again. You know, the times where I felt suicidal and depressed?
-
Look at all the Atheists trying to twist this as discrimination against them.
-
4 RespuestasThey do not mean someone being an atheist. They mean someone who has faith in nothing, or someone who loses their faith in what they previously held dear. So, they are looking to weed out sociopaths and the depressed.
-
I had respect for the Marine Corps aaaaaaaand it's gone

1 RespuestaEditado por Diplomat: 7/26/2013 9:13:57 PMThat's because atheists are more likely to commit suicide. Obviously the USMC is going to scrutinize individuals who display factors that are associated with an increased likely hood of suicide.

19 RespuestasThats Right marine Corps, THAT IS WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT STAND ON THEM ROOTS!

3 RespuestasAmericas military was always a bit -blam!-ed up, why do you think they lose so many limbs?
-
Allow me to convert to Christianity for fear of being unstable.

Okay, I choose the Jedi religion, can I join the marines now?

6 RespuestasIllogical, seeing as the most successful and richest American is an atheist.

3 RespuestasEditado por Gruntzilla24: 7/29/2013 12:09:03 AMIf the Marine Corps wants to provide more religious guidance to their Marines, go right ahead. War is a traumatic experience, and our troops should be encouraged to find mental peace wherever possible. That being said, they're not allowed to do THIS. Its unconstitutional. Period.
-
Unconstitutional.
-
Who cares? They hire sociopaths all the time anyways.
-
10 RespuestasNo atheists in foxholes.
-
Well I think I know how to solve this problem. Do what us Canadians do and have a bar attached to every single military establishment.
-
2 RespuestasWell, I mean, minorities, gays, and women have to be allowed in now, so they have to find someone to exclude.
