That's the breakdown of who voted in which way. So you can go get mad at your representative if they didn't vote the way you wanted them to.
111 Democrats and 94 Republicans voted to halt the NSA program, 83 Democrats and 134 Republicans voted to keep the program going.
The Republicans couldn't even get half of their members to vote to end this. This could have been a monumental gain for them, they keep saying that Obama and the democrats are evil and that you can't trust the government. That they are whats standing in the way of a complete government take over and they're the ones protecting the civil liberties of the everyday man. This was their moment to shine.
Aaaaand then the majority of the Republicans in congress voted to continue the program while the majority of Democrats voted to end it. What gives? The Republicans in congress could have easily made good on their word and passed this into the senate with the vote advantage they have.
If you're a republican, how do you feel about the people representing your party making this decision? How do you feel about them flat out doing the opposite of what they said they were going to do?

This has nothing to do with ideological differences. Both parties are very government-oriented, so it only makes sense that they're trying to retain whatever power they still have over the people (i.e. NSA surveillance programs). It's really only the libertarian-esque members of both parties that recognize the unconstitutionality of said programs.

It is not surprising that a glaring disparity exists between political rhetoric and action, seems to be the norm by today’s lunatic standards of concerted divisiveness, perpetual stagnation and bombastic theatre that is modern governance. Members of both parties fail their constituents, men and women who are trusted with power based largely on shared, overhyped ideas about how we ought to be. Many ultimately fall victim to favoring narrow and limiting self-interest while diverting attention away from their overt abandonment of dogma and people with lame finger pointing and fear mongering. Many Americans across the entire political spectrum take issue with this invasive interference into their personal affairs, a clear violation of rights these representatives are appointed to uphold. The subtle erosion of civil liberties shrouded in the guise of protectionist jingoism and widespread xenophobia is amongst the greatest threats to everyone living today, and the politicians repeatedly vote against us. Why do we continue to give authority to those who do not represent our best interests: socially, politically or economically? Is it apathy? Does the majority foster attitudes of powerlessness and insecurity? The binds of nefarious power cannot last. The primary process for people to abandon the malefactors that blight the world is their recognition and abhorrence, revealed as they are by the light of day.

I'm conservative, and I don't like the republican party.
-
I'm a Conservatives and I facepalm sometimes when I hear John McCain.
-
Probably because there's no difference between regular "republicans" and regular "democrats" today in politics. There's a few conservatives and liberals, but in general they are all the same in the end.
-
Believe it or not the decision was most likely a... political one. Since the democrats are in control of the executive, and that is the branch of Government most of the focus is on right now, they don't want to stop it. Keeping the negative attention on Obama, and off of their own policies is what they want. Hurting the Democrats, giving the Republicans more of a chance come elections and allowing them to change their policies after huge amounts of backlash, and in the face of a major demographic change. So it's in their benefit that Democrats are forced to endure the spot light a little longer.

If you try to apply logic to politics, your head explodes....

1 RespuestaIt seems distrust of the government only happens when the opposite party is in power. Remember when 9/11 passed and everyone was saying: If you're not a terrorist, you shouldn't have anything to hide. Quite frankly if the Republican party isn't dead soon, it should be. The massive amounts of hypocrisy and being outright ineffective at doing anything aside from stonewalling any and all legislature is astounding.

3 RespuestasI never get who I vote for. ;( We have the worst rep. in the history of womankind.
-
2 RespuestasIt's because part of the GOP that established the Patriot Act still exists. Ironically this bill got Tea Party members and Democrats to work together, which I don't think has ever happened before on any important issue.

Editado por Seggi: 7/25/2013 4:01:01 AMI'm getting that both major parties more or less think that this program's for the best, there's just more people who think that in the GOP.
