On the eagles in LOTR and why they didn't just fly to Mount Doom:
The strategy that the Fellowship decided on in Rivendell was to destroy the Ring in a mission of secrecy because Sauron did not know exactly where the Ring was. The eagles would've easily been seen flying towards Mordor and taken out by the Nazgul, sacrificing secrecy and drastically increasing the chances of the Ring being captured by enemy forces.
Travelers on foot could easily sneak around and scout ahead, slipping by unnoticed - hobbits especially are renowned for being light on their feet and very quiet which is why Gandalf recruits Bilbo for Thorin's quest to enter Erebor. Eagles would've been spotted as far as Cirith Ungol where the watchmen for Mordor stand guard, giving Sauron's forces time to prepare and engage.
Another thing: The Ring could not just be dropped into the caldera of Mount Doom, it had to be taken into the Crack of Doom itself: the centre of Sauron’s power where the Ring was forged. The Crack of Doom was at the end of a tunnel that bored into the mountainside, and an eagle would not have been able to fit inside and a giant eagle sitting by the Crack of Doom (provided it could even get there) would be easily noticed.
Finally, the eagles were generally dishonourable creatures who did not care for the affairs of mortal men. They only agreed to help Gandalf because he saved their leader who said he could call on them when needed.

Well put!

Never knew you were an LOTR fan, though I suppose it goes hand in hand with being an avid reader...
-
I am a MASSIVE LOTR fan, my dad used to read the books to me when I was a kid and I make a habit of reading them through every Winter. :P
-
If I say that I've only read the first book and watched the movies, what will my sentencing be?

Editado por Haruspis: 7/14/2013 6:23:22 PMAh, while I'm a massive LOTR fan I am not actually one of those elitist shits who looks down on anybody who hasn't read the books. I think that the films are fantastic and do some things even better than the books, so I shan't be dishing out any punishments today. ;)
-
:D The films were damn near perfect IMO. Near it.
-
I can't really fault them for anything major to be honest, they're all fcking fantastic (Fellowship is my personal favourite).
-
A bit off topic, but what are your thoughts on Harry Potter? I swear I remember having the same opinion as you on them...
They're not all that great, mainly because of the author's writing style. IMO.
I have mixed feelings on Harry Potter. It's one of the franchises I grew up with and so holds that kind of special place within me, but I am under no illusions as to how much Rowling completely ripped off LOTR, The Worst Witch and other things. Even so, I like the series (6 or 6.5/10, perhaps?) - The Prisoner of Azkaban, Half-Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows (Part 1) are my favourite films (and books) because they adopted a much darker style, tone and atmosphere.
-
Yep, similar situation here. I used to be a massive Potterhead, and then when I realized that the books really weren't as great as I thought they were I just sort of... tapered off. Never watched the final movie (read the book though).

Editado por Haruspis: 7/14/2013 8:20:47 PM(Thought you said 'Pothead' at first! :P) The final movie was ok, nothing spectacular compared to Deathly Hallows Part 1, but saying that Part 2 does have one of my top 3 scenes in the franchise in it - Snape's memories. I bawled like a fcking child when I watched it for the first time and it still manages to bring a tear to my eye. For the record, my top 3 scenes are: 1) Dumbledore's vigil at the end of HBP. 2) Snape's memories. (Alan Rickman stole the entire show with his god-tier performance!) 3) DH Part 1 opening.
