If that is the case will they at least make it so that it doesn't require Xbox Live Gold or PSN + to be able to play. Because if those subscriptions are required then Bungie inadvertently makes Destiny a subscription based game because people have to keep their memberships up to play online. By making PSN + and Xbox Live Gold required to play Destiny they would completely contradict their saying that Destiny isn't a subscription based game because it in reality would be just that, just not directly being paid to Bungie but to Microsoft and Sony. Some players also may want to play offline as well. I'm sure that number isn't some tiny percentile either. I think everyone wants to be offline sometimes.

Playing Destiny online is the requirement for the experience they are designing. Similar to limiting you to two weapons or forcing you to use the Falcon to fly through an area, Destiny is designed specifically to be a world you inhabit with the entire community. Shutting yourself off from that element contradicts what will make Destiny a special and unique experience.

I think everyone wants to be offline sometimes.[/quote] Yeah I'd like for offline play but Im sure you'll need Gold/PS+ to play. Some games for PS4 don't need PS+ like PlanetSide2 or Warframe. Not sure about The Elder Scrolls online for needing Gold/Ps+. But as far as we know you'll need membership to play.

you are wrong they have stated that it is going to be an always online game but that you won't need xbox live gold or psn+

I understand why, but if they want to go around preaching that this isn't a subscription based game then they need to ensure that elte membership isn't required and that people will be able to play with basic PSN and Xbox Live Silver or else everything they preach is a white lie. Sure we aren't paying a subscription to Bungie but we are paying Sony or Microsoft. Having to pay for a subscription for PSN + or Xbox Live Gold is no different then having to pay a subscription fee every so often to Blizzard for World of Warcraft. They need to ensure without fail that there is an offline mode or the ability to play online (if online only is the only option) without needing PSN + or Xbox Live Gold. It can only benefit Destiny if there is offline and no requirement for elite membership to be able to play. It would attract more customers that way.

Yes on having a offline mode but Bungie is trying to make a game that can turn into a social event in a instant. And for the membership needed, it's still to early to say.

I love the social aspect of Destiny. I don't think they should require gold or PS + because it turns Destiny into a subscription based game when they preach it isn't. I respect Bungie entirely and believe they will do the right thing, but just like in the case of Diablo 3, always online can be damaging to the game. Also in the case of Diablo 3, saying one thing and doing another can also be damaging to the game's reputation.

So does Bungie have to tell your ISP to refund everyone who plays Destiny? Paying for WOW is not like paying for XBL Gold. When you pay for WOW, you only get WOW. When you pay for XBL you get access to the multiplayer of hundreds of games.

I understand this. Still, if say I designed a video game. Preached that it was not a subscription based game and yet at the same time people still had to pay for a subscription to be able to play said game then is my game in reality a subscription based game with a third party subscription requirement. That is what I am getting at.

The service you pay for offers more than you will use it for. If all you will use XBL Gold for is Destiny, you are missing out because you could also play Halo multiplayer, or find some cool community Trials Evo maps, or access Netflix. With your internet, you are here on Bungie.net, but you could be on Reddit, or looking up how to bake cookies, or reading a wikipedia page about Benedict Arnold's amputated leg. With WOW, you only pay for and get WOW, that is a subscription. Saying that Destiny is a subscription is like saying you pay your ISP for access to Bungie.net, which is not true, you pay for a vast service that offers much more than one game for a third of WOW's subscription.

Unlike my ISP with my internet I only got Xbox Live for gaming purposes and use PSN for the same thing. I don't want to cough up $60 a year for a package of which I am only using a portion of.

Then only get the 1 or 3 months, that's what they're for, but saying that Destiny is a subscription based game because of an outside service that offers more than just Destiny is ridiculous.

It would be a totally different game then Destiny then. Because Destiny is a constantly evolving world that is influenced by its inhabitants, that can't happen offline.

The game is designed as an MMO-type where it's a persistent world shared with everyone else so it makes complete logical sense to be always online. Besides, who wouldn't pay for PS+ with all those free games and benefits.

Still, when they say Destiny isn't subscription based yet Sony and Microsoft force players to have gold or PlayStation Plus to play does that not make it inadvertently a subscription based game no different than the likes of WOW.

Well it's free for PS3. But they are still working on Destiny.

Not anymore, once PS4 releases it sounds like PSN is now going to cost about as much as Xbox Live, maybe slightly cheaper, but nonetheless no different than Microsoft.
