Why is Jesus' death referred to as a sacrifice, why is he portrayed as a savior? I don't understand the connection between the two. If those knowlegeable about Judaism/Christianity could help me that would be great.

Because scapegoating is awesome!

Because apparently some deities need to sacrifice themselves to themselves, before they can forgive you for doing what they inevitably caused you to do.

He died for our sins.

Jesus's death is referred to as a sacrifice, vecause it was just that. God sent him to the Earth to teach and then die on the cross as the perfect sacrifice. Similar to how the jewish sacrifice of an unblemished lamb took on the sins of the person(s) that sacrificed it, Jesus took on the sins of all mankind, past, present, and future. Thats why hes called the Lamb. Hes a savior, because by doing this, he made salvation available to every man; to all people. All a person has to do is accept his sacrifice.

1 RespuestaThis is what i'd like to know. If Jesus was a guy that was killed for spreading love and hope, what does that have to do with god? And how did people know he was the son of god? Did he go around telling people? This is what I never understood.

Jesus' death was him sacrificing his human life for all of our sins. His suffering, Death, and Resurrection are known (at least in Catholic teaching) as the Paschal Mystery. If we look back at the Old Testament during the plagues in Egypt, the Israelites had to sacrifice an unblemished lamb and put the blood on the door post, so the First born child would not die. Note that the lamb had to be "unblemished". In Greek (I think) a Pasca (not sure how to spell) is a lamb. Jesus being the perfect "unblemished" being sacrificed himself for our sins.

3 RespuestasThe short answer is that Jesus died for our sins. By sacrificing himself on the cross, he showed us all how to live. Think about that for a minute. He was being crucified because his message of love and hope threatened the power the pharisees (high priests) had over the Jewish population. Yet he was willing to die for those teachings, to show his followers that he believed in his teachings even into death. By doing this, he set a precedent for those to follow. He encouraged people to live a life of love and selflessness and to refuse sin. Since then, thousands have emulated his example, and thousands will continue to do so. The church hasn't been perfect, corruption is a cunning and it is hard to get rid of, but someday, his teachings will help us to triumph over evil. Think of it as a rock thrown into a pond, sending a ripple. Jesus' life and death is that rock. Christianity is the ripple. There is also a lot of speculation about what his soul did during the 3 days after death, but the most common belief is that he descended into Hell to free those at hell's gates, then he ascended into heaven to open it's gates so that people who died following him would be able to enter.

His death is regarded as a sacrafice because even though he had nothing to do in his own death, he still died. He basically died because of the wrong doing of man. And by allowing himself to be killed, he took weight of our wrong doings to the grave. When he was resurrected and ascended into heaven, our sins stayed in hell. So in this way, because he died for our sins, we are given eternal salvation.

Because he isn't. Behold our true Lord and Savior: Haruhi!

-
it is showing that he gave up his life in order to preserve the rest of the human race.

5 RespuestasThere were "saviors" before Jesus with similar stories. Jesus is not divine so him dying does absolutely nothing for anyone. It's only God who can forgive sins. And Jesus is not God.
-
According to the Bible, his torture and death acted as the punishment for all of humanity, so that anyone that accepted the sacrifice would not have to face that punishment.

8 RespuestasHis death washed away your sins. That's why. If he didn't die, the sin of man wouldn't not have been washed away by the blood of Christ, and this allows you a chance into heaven.
