PvP: Blanket Ability Uptime Nerfs won't work. We need another 30th Anniversary type of rebalancing

The TWID today mentioned that they are looking at addressing Crucible ability uptime in the future. I REALLY hope this doesn't mean a blanket nerf to all ability cooldowns. The Crucible needs another 30th Anniversary level of ability tuning. Bungie needs to look at every Super, Melee, Grenade, Class Ability, and Aspect and rate its potency, uptime, risk, and ease of use. Abilities that are potent, low-risk, and easy to use should incur the longest cooldown. Abilities that are potent, but high-risk and difficult to use should incur a medium cooldown. Abilities that are not potent, but low-risk and easy to use should incur a faster cooldown. The current cooldowns try to do this but it isn't working. This type of system was first introduced with the 30th Anniversary but that was nearly three years ago. It's time to adopt that balancing mentality again. Edit: Based on the downvotes, it’s clear many people didn’t play PvP during the 30th.

  • 7 tiers total, all ranked on PvP and PvE. 1. Judge how potent it is in PvP. That should be the base line. 2. PvE should determine whether it increases or decreases a rank from the base Line. Why? Well, certain abilities are specifically designed with PvP in mind, while others are designed with PvE in mind. As a result, determining its value in PvP should help satiate the temperance for these abilities when facing them, and act as a sort of pseudo balance. PvE will also have an effect on this though. PvP based abilities shouldn’t be punished just because they were designed for PvP in mind, so usually, these PvP abilities would reduce a level from their baseline Rank. This makes the ability more common in PvP, yes, but it will also make the abilities more consistent in both types of activities. PvE abilities will also return incredibly quickly, and act as though they have their own pseudo ranking with the more potent PvE abilities coming back slower than the least potent. This also helps with good general abilities, where if it’s good in both PvE and PvP it will have some of the slowest cooldowns. If it’s bad in both, it will have some of the fastest. This might actually make skip grenades useful. Each time an ability is buffed or nerfed, preservation of the abilities rank and by extension, strength, should not stay the same. Nerf the ability and reevaluate its ranking. That way, if Bungie absolutely kills an ability, that ability will come back much faster.

  • Sorry this sounds like it will ruin PvE since we can’t balance abilities cooldowns separately Honestly if they just made pvp completely separate from PvE the game would have less problems

  • I think PVP is fairly balanced as it is. We really only need some minor tweaks here and there. But what you're asking for is pretty close to the right answer, but in moderation. I don't think any significant changes are needed.

    • That would probably be easier if they hadn't laid off so much of their workforce... But hey, at least Pete will have enough to buy more cool cars

I’m in the minority but I hugely disagree with pvp players begging for ability nerfs that affect pve. I love abilities since they add to the experience. I left cod because gunplay only got boring. The last year of PvP alone has made me quit pvp because the special ammo rework was god awful and ability cooldowns kept going up. I’ve actually enjoyed the post final shape pvp because I can actually use my abilities and they are as lethal as much as my gun. That’s the kind of sandbox I enjoy. I know sue me for enjoying a feature in the game lol. But regardless. At this point they just need to remove pvp and make it its own separate game since the pve community love abilities and pvp players hate abilities and bungie can’t seem to balance nor separate the sandbox good enough to make both parties happy.

      • 30th anniversary update was awful in long term. Bubble/well meta for years instead of different roaming supers. Barricade became absolutely broken for a very long time, especially then they added airborne efficiency so you can't just float or jump around it to kill a titan without pushing him. Fusions became very strong for couple of seasons and they are still annoying to play against.

No, they need to separate the sandboxes and change the way you use+gain these abilities in PVP.
