It gets worse.
This is what is included in the tweet: • The layoff decisions came directly from Bungie management, not Sony. This is not about Sony replacing Bungie employees with their own people. • Many employee benefits (though not health insurance), only last until the end of the month if you're let go. Laying people off on the 30th means a single additional day of coverage. • Many employees had unvested shares as a result of the Sony purchase. These shares would be received based on staying the with company for a certain number of years following the sale. But those shares revert to Bungie if you leave, even if you're fired, which is what's happening now to many of those affected.
Top comment:
Edit: MORE NEWS • Many Bungie employees that were fired found out in the morning when they were locked out of services, logins, email access revoked. • Others who instead found out in meetings were told not to tell team members themselves, as teams would be told "by other means." Many employees were unable to say goodbye or exchange contacts. • Many team managers were not told at all about who on their team was being laid off, and only found out as it happened.
Good job Bungo

    • 🙀🙀🙀 You mean the same thing that happens at all companies everywhere happened at Bungie. So shocking! It's like people live in sheltered little caves. Company doesn't hit their projections they cut costs, period. And Bungie ran its ship like they had a bottomless vault of money. Incredibly high pay, over staffed, way to many extras, all the things you all constantly complained about and know your surprised that they had a layoff??? Stop clutching your pearls.

What did Bungie expect? They have burnt us the players time after time, under delivering... of course their projected sales are down 45%, we didn't pre-order.. and they take it out on community managers and musicians. Wtf! Maybe they shouldn't have announced Marathon was getting dedicated servers! They did it to themselves, greed will get ya every time...

I’m shocked people are shocked. This is what these companies are. The people who failed in leadership and management will all keep their jobs and salaries. Don’t believe their faux compassion.

        • Maybe take a look at the bigger picture. With Bidenomics in place and draining everyone's income, most people are cutting back on the really stupid purchases first(microtransactions for now, but games could be next). This is probably a good move by management in this environment. Fortunately, most or all of the employees have very marketable skills that are in very high demand.

          • What's crazy is nobody is pointing any blame towards the streamers/content creators. Who wanted the higher difficulty? Who asked for nerfs to specific exotics? But they don't get paid by Bungie directly so they aren't affected. A half hearted DLC gets released with an increase in difficulty with major nerfs to exotics, and somehow people are confused why people don't play or pay for the game anymore. Sure Bungie cut some costs at reducing the staff, but the player retention isn't 100% on them. Catering to people who profit from playing the game shouldn't be the main focus. Now look at what they've done. Even with all of this the content creators are still profiting from making YouTube videos about what's going on.The blinds stares of a million pairs of eyes. Keep riding that hamster wheel guardians.[

            • Welp, this is how the corporate world works like it or not. Contracts change, management gets fired, management fires workers, ownership fires everyone and brings in their own teams. "I've got eight bosses, Bob" is reality and so is layoffs and firings. Don't feel too sorry for anyone. For one, most of us agree the game was in a shite state of affairs anyway. Piss poor product turn out, previous delays, and recycled content was NOT turning everyone on. It's a fact substantiated by the gigabytes of posts complaining about this subject right here on this here forum. So, they (the collective fired staff and Bungie in general) had this coming for sometime and many of you wished for something very much like this to happen. Secondly, don't feel too sorry for the employees about their benefits either. Bungie HR provided them the opportunity to read through their investment options and health insurance on hire date. So, they knew about their shares likely reverting to Bungie when they hired on and at that first HR indoc to the company. If an employee did not read through the material, then that's on the employee not the company. Also, keep in mind all HRs exist to protect the company, not the employee. If Bungie hid the reversion of shares back to Bungie from the employees then we'll be reading about a lawsuit later. As for health, COBRA will cover most of them for a while as they transition to new jobs and Obamacare still exists, so the exchanges are open and available. Shutting off email and account logins/access overnight is a typical tactic when firing cadre. The point is to prevent the employee being fired from finding out while at work and then destroying data. Bungie should have offsite backups so the actual likelihood of losing data is low BUUUuuuuutttt....it is a prudent move to cut off all accesses when discharging personnel. Hence why one should never keep personal information or data (pix, etc.) on a work computer. Realistically, security should have denied the fired personnel entry to the building with HR collecting personal effects from desks, boxing them up, and stacking them in the lobby. Not being able to exchange contact information or say goodbye is bleeding heartism at its finest. No one cares; it is every man or woman for himself when this happens. Get your crap and move on. Networking should have already been established. Failure to have contacts already jotted down is a failure to anticipate losing one's job. No contingency means you've got a problem no one else has time nor inclination to solve. Take from someone in the government contract business for 12 years. That's how it goes.

This whole situation is quite amusing. Bungie lays off 100 people, including a group of useless community managers, and the community is suddenly surprised that a privately owned, for profit company isn't as altruistic as they made you believe. Lmao. I have some beachfront property in Colorado I'd love to sell some of you special folk. Really cheap too! On a more serious note, it appears to me Ole Bungo was just trimming some fat. This commie utopia where everyone gets a share and your feelings matter doesn't exist. I'm glad that illusion is shattered. The recession is real, people have alot less disposable income and AI is coming in hot and fast. You think it's bad now? In 5 years, most of these jobs won't exist. Edit: to anyone in art, composition, or coding, I would highly recommend picking up a trade and quickly

                • The method of the layoff is honestly not a big deal. Unfortunately, that is how most of them work. "If you know, you are not permitted to talk about it. If you don't know, SURPRIIIIIISE!" They don't give you much in the way of forewarning because they don't want to risk someone sabotaging the product. This is unfortunately just how things are done in tech. The timing and the reason behind the firings is much more concerning to me, in that they are doing their best to hide the actual reasons, is what concerns me. The method is shitty but not abnormal for the industry. Though seriously telling them on the last day of a month is ridiculous.

I’m going to be a bit blunt right now. So, you’re in a position where you are laying off people. You have, in the past, advertised that you are altruistic and good, and better than other companies. So where is the altruism when you literally fire people from an email??? How is that humane? Where’s the sympathy??? It’s shocking to me that Bungie could actually do this! If you’re going to fire someone, tell them straight up in their face, and don’t give some tweet saying they were good employees! If they were good, why did you fire them in the first place??? Makes me so angry. Honestly…

                      • Sounds like Bungle is more capitalist than they want many people to think they are with all the other nonsense they push. Some of us already knew that. Those of you pissed off we’re completely fooled.

                            • Yea, sadly not surprised because this fits the picture i have about the Bungie higher ups exactly. If those positions were unproductive and not "needed" anymore, these greedy idiots could have atleast communicated the layoffs atleast 3 months prior to not ruin some peoples close future. Disgusting.

Sadly, I don't know how long I will be playing Destiny 2 after this. Bungie blames others for their mistakes, not cool.

                                  • Isn’t it like this pretty much everywhere? Happened just like that at my job last year. Bungie is a company, meaning they have no feelings. Is this something new to all of you? They want what? MORE. More profit. Again, this is new to all of you? I been laid off and fired too, it happens and it always sucks. Nothing is going to change that. Life goes on. Good luck to all those who were let go, I’m sure you are all smart enough to land on your feet and everything will work out. Worst things are happening all around the world right now.
