You know the phrase, “great minds think alike?” Well, it’s a little misleading if you don’t know the full quote, “Great minds think alike, small minds rarely differ.”
It got me wondering, what other phrases and sayings do people commonly get wrong?

3 Respuestas“Survival of the fittest” is often misinterpreted as “the strongest and most athletic will survive”. I’ve heard/read a couple of different explanations for the wording: fittest = best fit, or that it was used as a metaphor. Not sure which is correct, but the original meaning was about adaptations that are most suited to the environment. Maybe it’s been used incorrectly so frequently that the phrase now has a legitimate double meaning.

2 RespuestasEditado por Upperclass Bum: 7/20/2023 1:16:16 PMNot a saying and it's only tangentially related, but way too many people don't understand the use of "quote unquote". People - people who are smarter than I could ever dream of being - even use it wrong, -blam!- I've even seen people type the -blam!- instead of using I don't know, quotation marks... The same people who justify the erroneous use of it are probably the same people who argued literally can be used to mean figuratively... One of the arguments I've seen for the misuse is that you can't convey the doubtful, sarcastic or discrediting tone when used the way it should be, but you absolutely can.

1 RespuestaThere are a lot of sayings that aren't correct, like, "Music has charms to soothe the savage beast." It's actually breast and not beast, meaning it has the power to soothe the source of emotions and feelings of the heart.

“You’re not you when you’re hungry” This is dumb because you can never not be you. Unless you’re dead but then you cannot be hungry

1 Respuestathe “road less traveled” thing was taken out of context
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.
