How do you have sbmm and a ranked system together?

Sorry, I just don't understand why you would have both at the same time. The whole point of a ranking system (bronze, silver, gold, plat, etc) is that you match with people in the same rank and will naturally equalize with other players your skill, with the best players being in the top tiers. Kind of a natural version of sbmm that rewards you for improving. So what's even the point of a ranking system if it's just going to all be strict sbmm anyways? Please somebody correct me if I'm just misunderstanding this, I'll put where I'm getting all this from:
Competitive Division / Freelance 3v3 This is now a playlist, randomly picking Survival, Rift, and Showdown. These modes showcase a variety of playstyles designed to show how good you really are. Uses a new SBMM setting built using concepts we developed for loose SBMM tuning, but tightened to match you more closely against opponents of your Skill.
• Because it's not 1v1. Teams need to be built of similar skill so an individual doesn't get unfairly rewarded or punished, possibly moving to a higher rank than they should be and then getting regularly outclassed. It's protection from people being able to grind the ranks by getting matchmaking luck.

ranked is based off sbmm so this is kinda a pointless question. If you're in the same rank you in theory of equal skill though comp has shown me otherwise. I see this rank mode being a failure purely on the fact that Bungie will not allow undesirables to be just that. Comp is a perfect example of what it will become. Unrewarding, irrespective of skill, and a complete waste of time. We still gonna have bronze facing off against diamonds like they already do now and thats the problem. Why would the sweats that hate sbmm play a mode that emphasize it? Bad players are just gonna be in bronze so why even bother? Without rewards and meaningful rewards its just another task and destiny needs less busy work and more fixes on core issues.

  • Think ranking is the new sbmm not rank and sbmm

  • It's essentially putting lipstick on a pig. It's current comp with new shiny rank badges. And yes, rank and sbmm are redundant and only in place to make sure pvp doesn't "oppress" below average players.

  • This is a good point. SBMM shouldn't be used in a "ranked" system. If you want your system to mean anything it should prioritise connections over all else to make sure that the playing field is as level as possible for the players involved. If SBMM is involved it will only give people a false sense of their actual skill level. I can't believe Bungo is really considering this, but then again, it is Bungo after all.

  • Yep, typical Bungo bs, if they use SBMM for matchmaking then the ranks are just as meaningless as reaching Legend in glory is now, everybody can do it if they play enough.

  • It's strict SBMM to keep higher skilled players from having easier matches than they should. Once everyone ranks, then their matches should be as close as possible in score each time. You don't improve your skills in a game that much by playing tougher opponents, you get frustrated which has the opposite effect. You improve by learning to out-play people of your skill level with the desire to climb higher, and naturally your efficiency should go up as you do so. Then you will move up in rank, rinse, repeat, until you cap out wherever you land.
The whole point of a ranking system (bronze, silver, gold, plat, etc) is that you match with people in the same rank and will naturally equalize with other players your skill, with the best players being in the top tiers.
This will still happen. Why wouldn't it?

    • I think part of the point is that this game has never included a visual or really any other kind of representation of your skill level relative to other players and now it will have one. It seems like a pretty thorough system I just hope that when it comes to capital S Skill that a lot of people won't already have a large portion of that defined prior to the new mode coming out and that the system will allow for improvement over time.

    • It's stupid but they always have. At least now there'll be placement matches so everyone in the rank you're placed in should be similar skill. Ideally rank and matchmaking would go off the same system though, not two independent ones.

    • It's because all Bungie devs are 0.5kd controller players who barely play the game outside the 5 minute play tests....

    • The new system is similar to the one used by Halo Infinite. For example, Halo uses 10 initial matches to determine your level and D2 will use 7. You have to give the new system a chance and see what happens. Halo's system failed. Many players stopped playing Ranked early this year, and they never returned. Among the problems discovered is that players became trapped into a rank and could not progress. Hopefully, this will not happen in D2, but I would not be surprised if it does occur. Rank progression is important to player retention.

      • I am equally confused. If low skill players only play other low skill players, you’ll end up with some of them hitting the highest rank. The ranks would not represent skill at all. I’m hoping they can clarify how this system works, because I don’t see it right now.

        • My best guess is that it just says that because it matches you with people near your position in the rankings. Maybe it's just not super strict about the rankings of those you match with so if you're at the top of silver, you can match with someone at the bottom of gold or something
