Well the grimoire has always described the Traveler la exterior as a shell. Now that it's been cleared up that the Pyramids AREN'T paracausal beings after all and that they are ships (as said by Eris on Mara's Intel on who steers "these ships") and they and the Traveler represent two different shapes, I'm almost certain there's a being inside there now.
Might even be whatever race the Witness was, minus the smokey faces on its head. Now wouldn't that be a twist: Two ancient siblings with differing ideologies like the Gardener and Winnower.

It’s a vessel for the Gardner. The Winnower calls the Traveler the Gardner. Ascribes all of its thoughts and actions to the Gardner. Also calls the Gardner female. Dreams of Alpha Lupi were D1 cards showing what the Traveler thinks. D2 lorebook has a star eyed female wolf that talks to Clovis Bray about his behavior. First wolf in D1, star eyed wolf in D2 The Winnower also said she is half dead, from their fight in the Garden. I’d say that makes the Shell part ship and maybe part icu.
