There is no skill based matchmaking and should never be as it is against the spirt of the game mode. The only thing that might affect matchmaking is card progress. While Bungie has made it easier for players to play Trials and get rewards they will only hold your hand so far. If you want to go to the Lighthouse you have to prove you are worthy by defeating all opposition no matter what skill level they are or what skill level your team mates are. With a low K.D you should consider playing regular Crucible matches until you improve you skill level. As a wise man once said "if you can not take the heat stay away from the fire".
