Open World Needs Love

No loot incentives, no story incentive, no material incentives, no exploration incentives, no open world specific gear, no open world vendor, no world tiers, bare bones public events. The Master lost sectors shouldn’t be the only incentive for people to visit different planets. Destiny 2 is super work-like and rigid in that aspect, which is Ironic because this is a game The open world aspect of this game is just bad which is a shame because the open world of this game has a lot, A LOT, of potential that is squandered

  • Agree 1000%!! Destiny could be so much better if there was incentive to explore with rare unique rewards. My wish list: 1) Each planet should have a unique loot pool of items that can drop while on the planet and ultra rare random hidden caches ( I call them Lost caches ) that can be found only by deep exploration. These chests should be guarded by cool unique enemies and again everything should be random, so you cannot go on You Tube and find everything. These chest can contain ornaments that change the look of the normal planet armor as well as, ships shaders, Ghost shells and weapons. 2) Rotating Legendary planetary public events that are a much larger scale and give better rewards. The regular events can still be there, but adding a rotating random harder event that does not show on the map will make it fun. 3) Add random hidden bosses that drop rare loot, but are well hidden. 4) Planet vendors should have rare unique multi-stepped quests that can drop from killing enemies and activities that reward a class specific Exotic item or Exotic weapon. like Factions in D1, but with some lore for the planet with exploring as you complete the quest. 5) Another idea is to bring back the lost ghosts, but add in unique rewards for finding all of them on each planet and make them random instead of static. I would love to see Destiny embrace the open world aspect with more incentives and reward for deep exploration of each planet. The biggest focus should be to find a way to increase the loot and by adding some of these ideas that would massively increase loot across the board.

    I was just thinking about this the other day. There needs to be a reason to participate in open world other than quests that force it. Players should want to explore regularly. Bungie’s world design is very good visually, but since 2014 the gameplay/structural aspect of open world hasn’t improved virtually at all (other than the Dreaming City, which was fantastic but even then there’s no reason to go back to it now). The planets are just lifeless husks. There’s no dynamic weather outside of Europa, and the blizzards there are short and underwhelming. The “day/night cycles” are virtually indistinguishable. There’s usually some cool collectibles with a secret reward (the lore book for the penguin toys is absolutely terrible btw and just there for woke points), but after that you’re done exploring… which is how most open world games are, but Destiny is live service. It sucks knowing that you’ve “beat” a planet a few days after it released, and will only re-visit it to complete bounties in lost sectors.

    • Patrols need unique weapons, armor, and cosmetics. Weapons with large perk pools similar to strike weapons could drop from enemies, chests, etc. to liven up roaming around. World bosses could spawn on different planets, offering a higher chance at a planet specific weapon. These bosses would be beefy, with simple mechanics such as breaking a shield to do damage, similar to an Escalation Protocol boss wave. I'd love to see very, very rare planet specific exotic weapons. These could drop from anything, chests, world bosses, etc. Think of the biome keys from Terraria, a super rare powerful weapon that can drop at anytime. Lost Sectors should be decently challenging mini-dungeon areas, instead of throwaway rooms full of ads. They could drop upgrade materials, planetary weapons and a unique set of planetary armor. Patrol beacons themselves should be small, self contained missions with a decent length and rewards. Public events are honestly relics of destiny 2s launch, and have remained untouched since release. Escalation Protocol was the most beloved public event for good reason; it was nonstop carnage and boss battling. I think every zone could benefit from an activity like this. I've been preaching for ages about giving patrol some love, but I don't know if it'll ever come to fruition. The Dreaming City, the Moon, and Europa have all been extremely underwhelming in terms of area replayability. Do glorified bounties for weapons, nothing unique or enticing for the player.

    • HVTs should get a health buff and get a unique loot pool. Patrols should drop 5k glimmer since it's basically a job. All locations need legendary patrols that drop upgrade materials Lost sectors need a unique loot pool with rare drop cosmetics. Public events need a loot buff. More glimmer and engrams.

        I also miss things in the open world like the Court of Oryx and the Archon Forge. They both had chances to drop good gear and random guardians can just show up and can just jump right into the action with you.

        • To me they had a great opportunity when they introduced Ada. She had all those weapon cases and I was sure we would be busy finding and retrieving them . Alas it didn’t happen 🙁

          • Go to trostland. Sparrow down the winding street to get to the plaza with the public event near the tunnel to niobe labs. I did that yesterday and it was the first time I'd been there in literal years. Cool feeling

            • Legit miss the wolves that would roam on Venus and stuff like that. I feel like there is a lot that could be done/added that would improve the overall experience outside of end game content. Blind well is what it is now but I miss Court of Oryx and Archons, use to have a lot of fun back in the day.

              • I agree. I say have a Court of Oryx style event in all patrol zones that awards you Planet-Specific Armour and Weapons. Have a rank up system around Heroic P.E. which also awards you Planet-Specific Armour and Weapons. Have additional NPCs that interact with each other and send you on repeatable activities to gain rewards. Create additional Patrol Zones with story line and the above suggestions rather than these 2-Bit pistol jockey 6-Player repeatables. Thanks Bungie.

                  The adventures were great and gave you a lot to do in the open world. Shame they didn’t develop adventures, lost sectors, patrols and public more to fit the evolving story. Just left to rot like everything else. Imagine if we had to help the cabal install their drill, or prevent the taken from disrupting a Fallen glimmer mining expedition. We friends now right?

                        • Well, if Bungie had better leadership this game could be a hell of a lot better off than it is. I mean if you look at this game, there should have been a D3 and because there wasn't there has been a lot of very poor decisions with this game that has caused more issues with the game and player base. I often wonder what it would've been like if things like the open would had a team just to work on updating the open world because Bungie creates a destination and forgets about it unless they are selling new content.

                            This game should be updated weekly and monthly with new weapons, strikes, nightfalls and enemies to chase. But it's not. You gotta wait 6 months to a year of anything of "value" very subjective. 💸📺

                            • I remember the spirit bloom runs on Venus in D1. Always used to complain about it, but man did we have fun grinding resources to level weapons. Maybe they'll bring it back with weapon crafting. Also the open world needs to be more populated.

                                • The open world patrol spaces should be the foundation that ties everything together and you’re right they are lacking. Just another disjointed activity you load in. I see some here wanting escalation protocol back. Near its end it was actually working quite well. [u]However[/u] when it was first implemented is was a toxic -blam!- show. Due to the overtuning of it, people were harassing random players to leave the instance so they could bring in their clan mates to 9 man it. The low player limit in patrol instances is a technical hurdle that needs to be taken into account when designing open world boss encounters. I guess the legendary/master lost sectors were an attempt to breathe some life into that content. I think it failed to be entertaining. The champions and load-out locks just make them awkward and tedious. Lost sectors could be fun little mini dungeons, but I think they need a rework both in how to raise difficulty and certainly in the reward structure. There is definitely a need to get a sense of exploration back. Some new rarer encounters, decent destination gear with a chance of desirable rolls or a contribution to weapon crafting. Maybe some storytelling and lore drops if they have the capacity. It certainly would be nice if the open world spaces got some love.

                                  All this game needs, is to prioritize actually PLAYING activities over doing bounties. Public Events should be one of the main sources of XP. Strikes, Crucible and Gambit too. I also have idea of having a new currency and vendor for public events. Unique open world weapons and armor. Same with all of the playlists. I also have an idea where each playlist activity has its own currency and then they would also grant a universal currency that applies to every playlist but stuff would cost WAY more by doing so. Buying engrams from each vendor with both currencies (one for the olaist specific one and one for universal). Or vendors can be turned into shops that we can roll different items but have something that limits us. I'm thinking of how strange coins worked in D1. If I'm not mistaken, you had a limited number you could get every week. Maybe something like that? I know it's not perfect, but I would like to see that implemented into the game. Same with adventures. ADD MORE. but make them about interacting with the characters of the game.

                                  • Been saying since D1 beta that this game has the potential to be one of the greatest, but it always falls short. Hopefully they can figure out what needs to be done to do that. I'm rooting for them, but I guess from the sidelines 😅
