If bungie are vaulting content on the basis of 'freeing up space'.....

..why can't they make it so that all vaulted content can be free to download dlc, so if players want to play this old content and have space on their console/pc, they can, while others who don't have 100+ gb of space can leave it uninstalled.....

You don’t seem to realize that the space argument is proven BS now. “We want the game to run better” Yeah right, we have over 1y of track record proving the total opposite. Edit: but hey, keep throwing money at the screen 6months in advance despite the company’s failure to deliver content in quality and time or much more for ghost and they will surely listen.

    • One wonders how much space they'd free up if they vaulted Gambit.

The issue at the heart of it is, Bungie just aren't technically skilled enough as developers to know how to run a game over a certain size smoothly, so they have to keep pruning bits off by stealing back content we've already paid for. Plenty of other games by other developers are bigger and manage to run smoothly, this is purely a Bungie problem.

        • because that's too easy and too smart for bungie the entire purpose behind the dcv is to remove old content, change 1 or 2 things in it, then resale it back to us while hyping up the "new" stuff and hiding the old stuff so we're suckered into spending $60+ for content we already purchased once before.
why can't they make it so that all vaulted content can be free to download dlc
Because they would have to spend more labor/time to keep it updated and in check and progress on everything else (including future content) would slow down. Imagine if you could re-download Leviathan and play through it and a bug was discovered that would grant unlimited resources/exotics. That's now something that Bungie has to support/fix, troubleshoot, disable and spend resources fixing it. It doesn't matter if the entire population has access to it or not (making it an "optional" download), if any players have access to the content, Bungie has to support it and upkeep it. The internet is quick to forget. Does anyone remember how often Bungie pushed out hotfixes/updates before Beyond Light / DCV launched? It was maybe 1 or 2 times a season. Now days, their time to take care of game breaking bugs is MUCH quicker. We're getting updates weekly/bi-weekly. Imagine if Bungie had to go back and continue to fix AFK Forges after Season of the Lost launch, or Reckoning wasn't progressing a quest step for Season 15 for some objectives, or if Stasis wasn't working properly with enemies/bounties/progression in the Leviathan or if Escalation Protocol would simply crash the game. What about when Bungie had to go back and fix the Izanagi's Burden quest after Shadowkeep launch when it was top weapon for DPS and players were locked out of a quest nearly a year old after a new raid launched. Bungie has a list of known issues for the current season that they're working to address, do we really want that list to be 2x-3x as long? Not to mention all of this is alongside development of new systems, features, content spaces, story, activities, economy, combat systems, seasonal, events, localization that Bungie is developing. They would essentially have to create these systems and continue to make sure it doesn't break anything else in the game that's existed for 4+ years, which slows everything down. I can almost guarantee had the DCV not existed at all, Crossplay would still be in development. In a world where every Destiny players wants "more new stuff to do", I don't think the term slowing down is what people want.

            • Vaulting is because all the talented coders were on loan from Activision. If they were truly concerned about space they’d trim the collections tab. In fact, if it were kiosk in the tower instead of on-demand 24/7 we’d all experience better performance. Why IS it there Bungie? Anything people would actually want can’t be drawn because of ‘random rolls’ bullshit.

            • Disk space is not their concern. Bungie doesn't care if you have 800gb or 8tb. It's the archaic engine the game runs on.

              • In D1, Bungie claimed that they could not increase vault space because the Xbox 360 didn’t have enough memory. It was a bizarre claim. The vault is just a visual interface showing cells from a database. Each item in the database exists in the game with or without the vault. The real purpose was to force us to buy Destiny 2. Now in D2, I would love to hear the explanation. The vault could hold 10,000 items and code and storage would be fine. They may not want that for other reasons, but the tech excuses are just that, excuses.

                  • Because that isn’t now the game was built. Also literally ignores the core reason they started this in the first place. Having to much content means too much time goes to maintenance instead of new content. Seriously they flat out told us this yet people always forget it

                  • Cause bungie is to lazy to get dedicated servers and dedicated storage for there own game. I literally bought a 1 terabyte portable usb storage for my PlayStation. Cause I had other games I wanted to play when not playing destiny. But still had enough room to download anything added into the game. I understand people’s strap for cash especially during covid and the governments bs. But give me a break if that is the basic excuse that is always used to say this is why we are removing content you paid for. Then bungie stop being lazy stop being greedy and get your own storage that well allow you to make the game that players want without removing content just to sell back at a later date like you did in destiny 1 and get some dedicated servers that your internet uses to run that game.

Honestly the game needs a separate HD texture download and that would free up easily over 50% space on basic download. But that needs to be built up for a new game, which Bungie is not going to do. So the current Destiny 2 is just a fiesta.

                    • It probably is a matter of stability more than anything. There's more involved in the process than simply deleting the missing content. Just like there's more involved in removing a kidney than cutting someone open, cutting it out, and stapling them shut. They probably could divorce the content and then glue it together into an experience outside of destiny where you can just play through the story with none of the open world completely device side with no network access but honestly this game doesn't have much without the loot grind.

The real (main) reason is that it's cheaper for them to maintain a smaller game. The secondary reason is to keep the file size small(er) and uncomplicated to make it "EZ" to download to try to lure in those "free" players in hopes that they will upgrade and/or spend money in everver$$$e.

                          • I really hate that bungie keeps removing content that I haven't touched in the last 3 years . Really grinds my gears . I mean I played it finished it and then grinded the game while enjoying it, then new content came out and I stopped playing the old content . Now the old content is leaving I must have it and keep it forever cherishing the time I played it 3 years ago hanging on to the hope of maybe sometime playing it again but probably not
if you can't tell, I can't help you
I honestly don't understand why people get bent out of shape about this.. how often do people run around distant Shaw bar spider or lost sectors. I ran those stupid missions 3 times l, ill not miss them - we've moved on.

                                • I don’t think it works that way. The second they initially removed content in Beyond Light the game ran so much smoother and faster, so I don’t think the issue is on our end or how much space we have.
