Yeah because me suggesting Salvatori should use some old melodies like they did with the Dust Giants theme in that strike a few seasons ago is totally me not letting him do his own work.
-
Actually it is. What would be accomplished by doing that, and how would it help players be immersed in the game? Which is the point of soundtrack music….
-
What would be accomplished by doing that, and how would it help players be immersed in the game?
I think it would tie into the story as we are heading toward a second collapse with the Pyramids returning. I think it would make sense to see those melodies return around Lightfall and the final shape.

Using melodies from the original game is cool yeah, but look at Deep Stone Lullaby. An original song with no references or nostalgia melodies added into the piece and look how infamous that song has become. Let the musicians make their own masterpieces without relying on what's been created before it.

Editado por TheArtist: 9/10/2021 1:05:32 PMYes it can be cool…if done in a fresh and interesting way….and it fits the multimedia experience it’s being created for. Writing for soundtracks isn’t like writing a song or a symphony. The best soundtrack work is initimately connected to what is going on in the experience (movie, game, etc..) in the moment. So it is either invisible—you don’t notice it because it just becomes part of the experience—or it’s “just” noticeable enough to evoke an emotion or idea that the composer wants in your head. John Williams is brilliant at this. Throughout the Star Wars movies he used The Imperial March to communicate fear, dread, and anxiety. Just a few bars of that melody could set the mood of a scene, foreshadow what was to come…or provide an artistic payoff. In Revenge of the Sith, his use of it was perfect as Anakin—-now finally Darth Vader—-marched on the Jedi Temple with The 501st to begin The Purge and commit the first of many atrocities he would go one to commit. The Jedi Temple March is very similar to the Imperial March. Using our familiarity with that tune to ground the scene, and foreshadow what was about to happen and the evil that the fallen Anakin was about to become. Yet different enough to mix the sense of dread with confusion. We think we know something horrible is about to happen, but we aren’t sure, and we don’t know what form it will take. But it works because of the foundation that Williams laid with his use of that time through six movies, so the payoff was huge when he used it to mark the public transition from Anakin Skywalker. Jedi. To Darth Vader Lord of the Sith. It worked because that’s what the scene needed. Not because it was a cool-thing-to-do.

Not a battle. I’m doing this for the OPs sake. Unless he is a composer of the same caliber, Salvatori will create work that is better than anything he can suggest. So stop backseat driving, and enjoy the ride.

Editado por TheArtist: 9/10/2021 12:31:25 PMWhat makes you think the artist needs your help, or that what you are thinking of even fits into his vision OR what the developers plan for the game?? This is what really gets under my skin. Some of you really don’t understand the difference between emotional investment and ownership. Just because you care about something, doesn’t give you the right to stick your nose in and start trying to exert control over it. BOUNDARIES!! This is not a communal project. Most of you don’t understand anything about composition or how composition for soundtrack work is different than fir stand-alone music. You have no idea where the plot in the game is going. What themes will be explored, or what the various melodies written so far mean to the composer or to the developers and writers. STOP BACKSEAT DRIVING. A car can’t be driven by COMMITTEE. Stop kibitzing and just enjoy what the composer chooses to create. Because it will be better than anything you suggest. If you feel a creative impulse, CHANNEL IT INTO YOUR OWN WORK.

No one said they need our help I’m simply suggesting they bring some old melodies back because i think it would be cool and tie into the story. That’s all im saying and you’re actually mad about it.
-
Editado por TheArtist: 9/10/2021 3:51:25 PMTie into the story, HOW exactly? And does that even fit with what the writer or the composer wish to do? I’m annoyed because your treating this like youre asking for game mechanics to be adjusted.
-
Editado por Hardrive2677: 9/10/2021 3:54:35 PMBecause those old melodies represent the beginning of the story. Which ties into the fact that we’re heading toward a second collapse and the finale of the story. That’s a pretty simple thing to understand you’re just being a contrarian. In what way did I mention any mechanics? I’m saying I think it would be a good idea. That’s it. Relax.

Editado por TheArtist: 9/10/2021 4:34:32 PM
Because those old melodies represent the beginning of the story. Which ties into the fact that we’re heading toward a second collapse and the finale of the story
They represent that to YOU. They don't represent that to me...and we don't know what they represent to the writers and the composer. As for your last sentence? PURE speculation. I've been following this game's lore since BEFORE the release of Destiny 1, and I have very little idea where we're going other than what they've revealed so far. That we're going to Savathun's throne world next year....and something will likely happen to the Traveler after that ...and the story is getting away from being a simple Light vs Dark, Good vs Evil morality play.. Here's the deal. You have conflated emotional investment in this game's story and music with ownership. The notion that you know it so well that you can start giving advice on what to do with it. But odds are you have never written music for soundtracks...and you have no real idea where they are going with the story and how that ties in with game play and locations (which game soundtrack music has to do) you haven't seen.... ...because they hasn't been created yet. So getting up at this point and saying what Salvatori should be doing musically---when you are without any sort of of context about what situation he'll find when he sits down to compose-----makes no sense artistically..... ...and is kind of disrespectful to him personally. Every artist has their on way of doing their best work....and standing over them and offering them unsolicited 'advice" is not helpful (at best)..... ...and can actually BLOCK them if they dont' have the discipline and confidence to TUNE IT OUT (at worst).

Editado por Hardrive2677: 9/10/2021 4:52:57 PMAgain it’s not advice. Like you said I’m not a composer I’m simply making a suggestion. They don’t have to agree with me and they have no obligation to listen to my post in the first place.😂 you are reaching beyond the Milky Way galaxy if you think it’s disrespectful to suggest they use an old theme song. It would be like Star Wars only using the force theme during the binary sunset and never using it again that’s the point I’m making. They don’t have to care what I think and neither does anyone else it’s my personal opinion. Art is subjective. It’s not disrespectful to say hey I think it would be cool if you used an old theme from the beginning of the game. And it’s is most definitely obvious that a second collapse is likely inevitable. The story is going to wrap up this arc from the first game to now in the next 3 expansions. There’s no reason to get this up tight about a fan saying they would like to see a familiar melody return. And they will most likely do this. They’ve done it before. I would just like some of the main themes about the traveler and the collapse to find their way to come back somehow. That’s all. It’s not game breaking if it doesn’t happen but it would be COOL. That’s ALLL I’m saying and you’re trying to discredit that because you’re a contrarian. Salvatori is a good composer on his own but he also worked on those old themes it’s still his work too he can use it. And since he constantly re works the old red war melodies it would be nice to see him use some other tracks from Destiny 1 instead. That my OPINION. Bungie doesn’t have to listen to me. And it’s not advice.
-
Yeah. Fan “suggestions” gave us Episode 9. The worst Star Wars movie I’ve seen in 45 years. The only one wher ive walked out at the end thinking, “God, that was bad.” Like I said. Emotional investment isn’t ownership and the composer doesn’t need your help. …and your suggestions aren’t really helpful, since you don’t know major things about where the game is going that are crucial to writing a good soundtrack.
-
Editado por Hardrive2677: 9/10/2021 10:27:56 PMWhen exactly did I imply that emotional investment is ownership? I said I think it would be cool to see an old theme song come back. You’re trying to create something to argue against. I never said I own anything. Simply stating what I personally would like to see in a future expansion has you this tight
-
When you started giving a professional composer unsolicited advice on how to do his job.
-
Again it’s not advice we’ve been over that. I am not a composer I can’t give advice to a composer. I made a post saying what I would like to see in a future expansion. Personally I think it would be cool if those themes were reused in a clever way to tie things full circle but I understand you disagree. I don’t expect Salvatori to personally read what I said and take pointers from me. I’m stating an opinion. It’s not “unsolicited advice”
-
One of these days you’ll figure out that you’re contradicting yourself. But apparently it isn’t going to be today…
-
One of these days you’re going to realize you’re a contrarian and you start random arguments for no reason
-
No. I’m an amateur musician and composer, and understand that what you’re doing is not helpful and is mildly insulting.
-
I don’t care if you think it’s not helpful and insulting though because I’m not “trying to be helpful” as if I work on the game and It is not an insult to state that I think there are some good melodies from year 1 that we haven’t heard in a while. It’s not either of those things. Just because my opinion makes you upset that doesn’t mean what I said is an insult to the composer. You’re implying that I’m trying to take ownership over their creation. Wrong. Im saying what I personally would like to see in the future and you make up the point about emotional investment to serve your argument. That’s it. You can reach and say that it’s disrespect or an insult but it’s not. You’re upset that a guy in the forums wants an old theme song to be re used. You are a contrarian who argues in the forums all day.
-
Still proving my point. ITS NOT ABOUT YOU OR WHAT YOU WANT. It’s about what the game needs to tell its story in an immersive and emotionally impactful way. And adding stuff because you think it’s “cool” and you haven’t heard it in awhile? Like you’re sitting at home listening to Spotify or Pandora is not helpful. Shows you don’t understand what Salvatori is doing… …and it is disrespectful to him and what he and the writers are trying to do.
-
Editado por Hardrive2677: 9/10/2021 11:20:38 PMIt’s not disrespect. I still enjoy what Salvatori pumps out every year. Me saying I like his old work too and think some of the old themes should still be used is not harmful to anyone. I’m literally admiring his own work
-
Your not telling him what you like. You’re telling him what to do.
