I tried writing this once, scrolled up to reread everything for typos, and accidentally closed it out by scrolling up too far, so now I’m going to keep this more brief.
The nerf to Fighting Lion is dumb. It’s a B-Minus-tier weapon in proficiency and an S-Plus-tier weapon in fun, but nerfing its damage, blast radius, and most importantly its reload speed is about as necessary as putting a patch over a hole that’s already been patched.
To use Fighting Lion in the way most people do (and in the way that’s most fun), you follow this flowchart:
Do you see anything? If no, don’t shoot. If yes, then; does it move? If yes, shoot it. If no, shoot it anyways.
In PvE, everybody who uses Fighting Lion uses it like a primary. If it looks like something shootable, then shoot it. The reason why we do that is because it’s more fun to shoot a Knight in the face with grenades until it dies than to shoot it once with Fighting Lion, then switch to something else to kill it.
It’s a different story in PvP. It is a good priming weapon, so the trait where it reloads when you kill something primed by it makes sense. It’s incredibly potent in the right hands, and to keep it from being overwhelming, it gets limited ammo. You can still kill a Guardian with Fighting Lion for ammo, but the amount you get back is less than in PvP (as far as I remember), and getting a kill with Fighting Lion doesn’t happen nearly as often as getting a kill with another weapon. The limited ammo is a good check for it, and it allows it to have infinite ammo in PvE. It’s actually rather smart design.
So then why does it actually need infinite ammo? Because it’s a primary? Well, it’s also a grenade launcher, and every one of those have limited ammo, so it’s not a stretch to say that Fighting Lion shouldn’t get infinite ammo as well. If it doesn’t get infinite ammo, then it wouldn’t need to be neutered by the reload speed nerf.
The infinite PvE ammo combined with the reload speed is why Fighting Lion is so fun despite not being a good exotic. It feels better than it is because it’s so damn fun. But by reducing the reload speed to quite literally as low as possible will make everyone who uses it put it in the vault forever because you’re taking the fun out of the weapon. Why try to force everyone to use it a certain (more boring) way when you can leave it alone and let people have their fun? They’re not even coming close to breaking anything.
And no, you are using it the right way by reloading it, because that means you’re throwing out as many grenades as possible, exactly as Shaxx says you should.
Also, in terms of a priming weapon in PvE, I can use my Truthteller with Blinding Grenades, Auto-Loading Holster, and a Quick Access Sling mod to do the same job as Fighting Lion, but better because of the higher damage, the blinding effect, and the fact that it doesn’t take up the Exotic slot. Because of that, Fighting Lion as a priming weapon in PvE is less than useless—it’s a hinderance. The ammo difference is a non-issue as well because Exotic primaries are going to have a higher chance to drop Special and Heavy ammo on kill, meaning it’s going to be easier to keep a Legendary grenade launcher topped up on ammo than ever before.
Fighting Lion works best in PvP in the close-mid range, just like Fusion Rifles. You know, the weapon that’s being made widely viable again? Fighting Lion is already going to have to compete with Fusions for that area, but it’s also being shot in the foot. Why? They say balance, but it’s balanced already, so why nerf it? Why are you trying to turn Fighting Lion into another Sealed Ahamkara’s Grasps?
The extra reload speed you get from damaging enemies also means little to nothing because it doesn’t increase the reload speed past what it is now, meaning the average reload speed is going to be half, if not slower, of what it is now.
Now, I’m not going to sit here and ramble for a eon while also not giving a way to fix it, because I believe incoherent criticism is worthless and constructive criticism is greatly important. So here’s what I would do to Fighting Lion to keep it balanced:
Nothing.
Seriously, I’d do nothing. At most I’d buff its own blast radius and damage to even out the Grenade Launcher nerf, but in terms of ammo, I’d leave it the same. It’s a grenade launcher, so it makes sense for it to not have infinite ammo, because it already does in PvE. Keeping its ammo limited but not non-existent in PvP also prevents it from being overpowered or overwhelming, meaning the reload speed nerf doesn’t need to happen. And if you really don’t want it to drop white ammo bricks, make it drop something else you can pick up. Not Orbs of Power, but something else you can walk over to pick up that gives ammo back.
TL;DR, the nerf to Fighting Lion is unnecessary and pointless, and it’ll absolutely kill the weapon, especially when every other grenade launcher can do its job better than it can. To keep it balanced, I’d leave it where it is now, limited ammo and all, and maybe increase the blast radius and damage to compensate for the broad Grenade Launcher nerf.
Edit: With reset happening today as of writing this edit, I’m going to be spending a week with the new Fighting Lion to learn as much about it as I can to really determine if this is a bad change or not. It sounds horrible on paper, but I want to know how it will actually perform and if it’s still as fun to use. I’ll share my findings and my thoughts in a post sometime next week.

Great post, for pvp I’d say the splash damage is the biggest concern as it’s non existent now. The reload nerf can be mitigated slightly if you build around it with exotics etc. Bungie please fix this.

1 RespuestaIt’s more like patching the hole in the boat then breaking the oars and telling the crew to paddle with their hands.

1 Respuesta"keep it more brief" he says... Was the original version a novel?

1 Respuesta“We make primary unlimited ammo” “But fighting lion is exotic only because it uses primary ammo” “Oh well then we should make it useless in any situation so it could stay exotic” Very exotic!
-
4 RespuestasI literally never see anyone using it in pvp or pve.. there are much better options for both without taking up an exotic slot.
-
I'm surprised so many people seem to be praising the nerf of a gun they see once or twice a season in play
-
I don't really get the nerf. I used fighting lion a lot in PVP the 1st year. It was great in a primary-only meta, but even then you always have to switch weapons to mop up the kills. Currently, I rarely die to it, so what is the deal? Is it being used in trials? There are better grenade launchers to use right now. Ammo with FL has never been an issue in PVP.

1 RespuestaEditado por DNF2005: 8/22/2021 5:40:58 PMThis stuff is all by design Do you think breach and clear was a coincidence? They introduced it knowing full well they were going to nerf anarchy next season. They map this crap out months in advance Bungie is pushing a bs primary weapon meta for next season and fighting lion does not fit into “their” mapped out plan so they killed it off Read the twab taking note of the changes and you will see what I am talking about Oh and don’t worry as I am sure they have more surprises for the next reveal Every twab annoys me so I need to stop reading, sunset this game, or give bungie my log in so they can play my characters according to their script… lol Fighting lion < blue engram

2 Respuestasagree that FL didn't need this nerf, it was already incredibly hard to justify FL instead of a vastly more productive exotic just speaks loudly to an out of touch team making an adjustment to balance out an extremely small segment of players while over nerfing the vast majority that use the weapon
-
You are despicable Bungie.

1 RespuestaI had Fighting Lion since it dropped, and last season finally completed the catalyst, It is my firm belief that when ver I finish the cat for an exotic, Bungie has a red flashing light go off in their offices and that means it has to get the nerf hammer. My fault, so sorry. I agree with the OP on every line.

4 RespuestasEditado por WulfPak666: 8/23/2021 10:57:09 AMAs for Fighting Lion, they said it's default reload speed will be 0, but what about the Catalyst? Doesn't that add a healthy chunk of reload speed as well? Is it still gonna be 0 with the catalyst or are they going to change what stat the catalyst bumps? Classic Bungie not explaining didly dick. Was Fighting Lion even being used that much to warrent such a change in the first place? This may be odd but I think this is one of the only times they've nerfed an underused exotic. I never see it in pvp and I've only seen it widespread in PvE once when the catalyst came out from the Haunted Forrest. Maybe that one Warlock main in the office was using fighting lion a tad too much with his Nezarac Sin to spam Stasis turrets and the sandbox team just had a major itch in their bum because of it? Only logical reason I could think of. I'm honestly more surprised they didn't nerf blinding grenades. Those are borderline OP as shit in endgame PvE.

9 Respuestas"Nobody asked for infinite primary ammo" I hate to see this toxic narrative being passed around. Can we just let the game designers design the game, please? I think it's wrong to crucify the devs for giving us a sneak peek at what's to come; We haven't even tried the new season yet, let alone seen what hasn't been announced (such as artifact mods) A new season should feel fresh, and should give players a chance to try new things. Where is the magic if you're using the same bag of tricks? Adapt and overcome. If you really love FL, then find a way to enjoy it in the new season. It's not like it's being removed from the game, there's plenty of GL mods available to make it usable if it's really that bad. I'm not saying our feedback doesn't matter, but I think you should at least playtest the changes before making any serious judgement. For all we know it could still perform well, and if not then I think we should be able to accept that noob tubes aren't supposed to be meta this season (with an exception being witherhoard 😍) If players got everything they wanted out of this game then it wouldn't even be a game. I love destiny for the challenges it offers, not because fighting lion is my favorite gun and the only exotic I'm willing/able to use. I love a new season because it gives new ideas and guns a chance. How boring would it be to spend another season using the same strategies and builds I've been using the past year? Let the game grow.

5 RespuestasCouldn't you just throw on a grenade launcher reloader mod to increase it's reload speed? I know it doesn't exactly fix the issue...but it should alleviate some of the nerf.
-
7 RespuestasWell people asked for grenade launchers to be nerfed but wanna cherry pick which ones should be. Nope all gls got nerfed that includes witherhoard and fighting lion. Yall said it doesn't take skill to use gls so don't complain when they get nerfed. I warned people about habitually complaining and using skill as a reason so now you got what you asked for. It now can only prime just like yall asked eventually specials won't be a thing and they will be just what they should have always been a primary or an option. Nerfs based on usage and popularity can have terrible results and this is the consequence.
-
5 RespuestasThey are adding holster mods so if there is a Grenade launcher loader mod technically you can counter that nerf
-
3 RespuestasThe reload nerf doesn't even make sense in pve, remove the reload nerf but limit ammo in pvp, how hard can it be?
-
3 RespuestasPvE, tagging multiple enemies will increase reload speed so as long as you hit a handful, 3/4+, should be relatively unchanged. PvP with infinite ammo it would be a problem as is. The change will encourage use as intended; get into a cadence of tag with Lion, clean up with kinetic, Lion is auto-reloaded for next engagement. Supplement play-style with Dragon's Shadow, Ophidian Aspect or perks like Inertia Override.
-
3 RespuestasMight as well just add autoloading holster.
-
4 RespuestasI don’t use it can somebody convince me to? Sure it runs on primary but what’s so great about it? Would I have to run a special? Another primary?
-
3 RespuestasBro trust me no point I’m getting upset at Bungies nerfs , they always do this shit , I just started to accept it

1 RespuestaIf this is your idea of "brief", I'd hate to see what you consider a long post.
-
My assumption is that the crucible special ammo economy nerf is coming in the near future (bout time). Fighting lion is a special weapon that can completely negate any sort of special ammo nerf because it uses primary ammo (the same issue that was in d1 with weapons like icebreaker, invective, no land beyond, and universal remote). My guess is that this nerf is in preparation for the crucible special ammo economy rework that is coming soon, as fighting lion would very obviously become very over powered in that environment. If that us the case, I'm all for it Also, breach loaded nade launchers in the crucible is dumb anyway. I just want to know who the genius at bungie is who though nade launchers outside of the heavy slot was a good idea. It's so dumb.
-
7 RespuestasAs someone who’s gotten 10k FL kills in pvp it needs a nerf. It’s very strong, and it would be even more insane with unlimited ammo. I think 0 reload speed is a bit much, but we will have to see

2 RespuestasF u c k breach loading grenade launchers. Especially in crucible
