Fighting Lion Doesn’t Need To Be Nerfed, Especially Not This Hard.

I tried writing this once, scrolled up to reread everything for typos, and accidentally closed it out by scrolling up too far, so now I’m going to keep this more brief. The nerf to Fighting Lion is dumb. It’s a B-Minus-tier weapon in proficiency and an S-Plus-tier weapon in fun, but nerfing its damage, blast radius, and most importantly its reload speed is about as necessary as putting a patch over a hole that’s already been patched. To use Fighting Lion in the way most people do (and in the way that’s most fun), you follow this flowchart: Do you see anything? If no, don’t shoot. If yes, then; does it move? If yes, shoot it. If no, shoot it anyways. In PvE, everybody who uses Fighting Lion uses it like a primary. If it looks like something shootable, then shoot it. The reason why we do that is because it’s more fun to shoot a Knight in the face with grenades until it dies than to shoot it once with Fighting Lion, then switch to something else to kill it. It’s a different story in PvP. It is a good priming weapon, so the trait where it reloads when you kill something primed by it makes sense. It’s incredibly potent in the right hands, and to keep it from being overwhelming, it gets limited ammo. You can still kill a Guardian with Fighting Lion for ammo, but the amount you get back is less than in PvP (as far as I remember), and getting a kill with Fighting Lion doesn’t happen nearly as often as getting a kill with another weapon. The limited ammo is a good check for it, and it allows it to have infinite ammo in PvE. It’s actually rather smart design. So then why does it actually need infinite ammo? Because it’s a primary? Well, it’s also a grenade launcher, and every one of those have limited ammo, so it’s not a stretch to say that Fighting Lion shouldn’t get infinite ammo as well. If it doesn’t get infinite ammo, then it wouldn’t need to be neutered by the reload speed nerf. The infinite PvE ammo combined with the reload speed is why Fighting Lion is so fun despite not being a good exotic. It feels better than it is because it’s so damn fun. But by reducing the reload speed to quite literally as low as possible will make everyone who uses it put it in the vault forever because you’re taking the fun out of the weapon. Why try to force everyone to use it a certain (more boring) way when you can leave it alone and let people have their fun? They’re not even coming close to breaking anything. And no, you are using it the right way by reloading it, because that means you’re throwing out as many grenades as possible, exactly as Shaxx says you should. Also, in terms of a priming weapon in PvE, I can use my Truthteller with Blinding Grenades, Auto-Loading Holster, and a Quick Access Sling mod to do the same job as Fighting Lion, but better because of the higher damage, the blinding effect, and the fact that it doesn’t take up the Exotic slot. Because of that, Fighting Lion as a priming weapon in PvE is less than useless—it’s a hinderance. The ammo difference is a non-issue as well because Exotic primaries are going to have a higher chance to drop Special and Heavy ammo on kill, meaning it’s going to be easier to keep a Legendary grenade launcher topped up on ammo than ever before. Fighting Lion works best in PvP in the close-mid range, just like Fusion Rifles. You know, the weapon that’s being made widely viable again? Fighting Lion is already going to have to compete with Fusions for that area, but it’s also being shot in the foot. Why? They say balance, but it’s balanced already, so why nerf it? Why are you trying to turn Fighting Lion into another Sealed Ahamkara’s Grasps? The extra reload speed you get from damaging enemies also means little to nothing because it doesn’t increase the reload speed past what it is now, meaning the average reload speed is going to be half, if not slower, of what it is now. Now, I’m not going to sit here and ramble for a eon while also not giving a way to fix it, because I believe incoherent criticism is worthless and constructive criticism is greatly important. So here’s what I would do to Fighting Lion to keep it balanced: Nothing. Seriously, I’d do nothing. At most I’d buff its own blast radius and damage to even out the Grenade Launcher nerf, but in terms of ammo, I’d leave it the same. It’s a grenade launcher, so it makes sense for it to not have infinite ammo, because it already does in PvE. Keeping its ammo limited but not non-existent in PvP also prevents it from being overpowered or overwhelming, meaning the reload speed nerf doesn’t need to happen. And if you really don’t want it to drop white ammo bricks, make it drop something else you can pick up. Not Orbs of Power, but something else you can walk over to pick up that gives ammo back. TL;DR, the nerf to Fighting Lion is unnecessary and pointless, and it’ll absolutely kill the weapon, especially when every other grenade launcher can do its job better than it can. To keep it balanced, I’d leave it where it is now, limited ammo and all, and maybe increase the blast radius and damage to compensate for the broad Grenade Launcher nerf. Edit: With reset happening today as of writing this edit, I’m going to be spending a week with the new Fighting Lion to learn as much about it as I can to really determine if this is a bad change or not. It sounds horrible on paper, but I want to know how it will actually perform and if it’s still as fun to use. I’ll share my findings and my thoughts in a post sometime next week.
