Content Vaulting. And why it's a terrible idea for the game.

First off, a bit of context. I'm a veteran who's been playing Destiny since D1, year one. I don't post anything on the forums, because frankly I don't expect bungie to actually listen and do anything with the feedback they're given. But at this point, I felt like I just had to put my thoughts out. I was never satisfied with Destiny. It has always been sold to us as an incomplete game with most of it's story gutted and shoved into lore cards, not actual gameplay. It's only real redeeming quality is it's unique shooter experience, which I have enjoyed. But gameplay alone doesn't make a game or make it worth 60 bucks. Especially when other games give so much more for so much less. AND THEY DON'T TAKE AWAY WHAT YOU PAID FOR. Right now, it's borderline Impossible for new players to get into and stay invested in Destiny. Because there's no campaign to introduce the characters or make us care about them, not nearly enough context to understand the story of the Game and the whole conflict with the Darkness. I can't even recommend this game to any of my friends anymore, because who wants to give someone money for a glorified lease that'll expire whenever the dev's feel like it? Those are just a few of the many problems plaguing the game right now because of content vaulting. And they'll only keep getting worse if Bungie continues to take stuff out of the game instead of Improving on it. Bungies explanation for the game is too big makes no sense if they want this to be an mmo. There are bigger games out there then Destiny right now. And most of them don't take away paid DLC. Bungie if you're REALLY listening and insist on continuing this, at least give us compensation for the stuff you take away from us. That's what anyone with common sense and integrity would do. Anyway, I can't be the only one here who doesn't see the problem with all this. Is Content Vaulting going to seriously hurt the game in the long run? Let me know your thoughts, if you feel like it. Or don't. Your choice.

  • To me the big problem is 3 years after launch of this game is VERY much time for an entirely new game. Three hears after D1 people were tired and clamoring for D2 and that's what they got; an Entirely new game. The Content Vault seems as a way to take stuff out and put other stuff back in lieu of making a new game. But 3 years on what's really needed is what a new game brings which is entirely new weapons, armor, locations, planets, story, exotics, strikes, modes, full slate of new pvp maps, raid. But that's not going to happen and worse they are bringing things out of the vault as if they were new but that doesn't fix the issues because it's fundamentally old content when people want new.

  • I am commenting without reading. But it seems like they vaulted stuff to give it back to us to make it seem like there's more content

Unfortunately, Bungo doesn't care about new players. They need long, obnoxious, stupid grinds and fresh content for their 9 streamers so they can all make money off of us. You're not supposed to play this game anymore, you're supposed to watch people play this game. It sucks.

Honestly, they only did for a few reason but I personally as a game designer and as someone that plays games hate what they have done. They could have overhauled their code and optimized the game like many other games do. However, they didn’t want players to do whatever they want and they wanted to have less content to QA. In short, they wanted to remove content because it affected endgame population, it meant a bigger QA load, and more commitment to Destiny than they’d like to give. They want to be a multi-franchise studio. So, they’re moving a majority of devs to other projects to work on instead of this one. To those saying the game runs smoother. Really? How so? I’m still seeing load times that last 1-2 minutes. It’s getting slower over time not because they’ve added more content but because they’re stringing their code around. They haven’t overhauled anything on the dev side because they will just remove content you pay for after each year. That’s their game plan. If EA, Activision, Ubisoft, and any other publisher pulled any of these decisions in their games. A lot of folks would practically riot over it be labeled worst company in the world and it’d get reversed. I mean Bungie has artificially made Transmog a grind on top of monetizing it blatantly. Bungie is not an indie studio that deserves leniency. NMS got more shit than anything Bungie has when Bungie has done things that should destroy itself. As for myself, knowing Vaulting Content is a thing is a reason I will never buy Expansions or Season Passes or MTX for this game because I will not support it. They still charge next to full price for Forsaken even though they’ll be removing it very soon. So why bother buying anything in this game, if it’s going to be removed. I’d rather take 40 USD into a gacha game.

        • That’s a problem that every long running game runs into. For every player for whom the lack of a long campaign is an obstacle to investment, there is a player for whom that campaign is just a barrier to entry and getting to the new content to play with their friends. Fact is you just can’t please both camps. When storage was cheap and the game could be allowed to grow uncontrollably, leaving it in and giving people boosters to bypass it was a viable option. But now, this game will lose people if it starts taking up massive amounts of the limited storage space on ps5 and Xbsx.

          • Okay, then you come up with a way for the game to not get overloaded to hell with the amount of content in the game. All I know is once beyond light dropped the game ran so much smoother than it did before. I think people are forgetting the whole reason they did all this in the first place. It wasn’t a marketing thing, an Eververse thing, they weren’t attempting to force us to pay more for anything, it was literally because there comes a point where there’s just too much content in the game.

            • They should let us pick and choose what content to install like MW remember when D2 was as big in GB as MW let's go back to that yes 200 GB

            • The game running poorly because it's too big would also be bad. I'll trust Bungies judgement. If you know game development better, please make the next Destiny killer, I'd love to play it....

              • I think the thought process is why invest a lot of time into a side of the game people don’t use for long. Like if they dedicated a season to it the majority of players would t ever even see the changes so why bother. A good intro should be a thing but idk I can’t really blame them for not trying when the end game is constantly in need of more content

              • Hold on to your hat because more stuff we paid for is being removed. They’ll bring back D1 stuff we’ve done countless times but continue to remove content which is ridiculous. It won’t be long until they’ve brought back so much more D1 stuff advertised as “new content”. 🤦‍♂️

              • So you think content vaulting is bad because it means new players cannot become invested in the game? Yet the Red War campaign also didn't properly introduce players to the world and confused them? They can't become invested in the game because "content expires"? I fail to see how this is a problem since the only content which it as risk of going away is content that wouldn't engage a new player anyway. Forsaken is a nice story and all, but still nothing which engages a new player since the entire DLC relies on your connection with Cayde-6, otherwise it's just a pointless kill quest.
