My wife purchased it for my birthday, the emailed code says beyond light plus season and cost £42.99

Okay then yes that confirms that it came with the current season at time of purchase, which was season of the hunt. So if you want to play season of the chosen, you’ll have to purchase it. You can purchase silver and buy the season pass that way, as you won’t need to buy beyond light again.

I can’t address anything related to pricing or cost evaluation, but the £42 version, as you mentioned, included beyond light (which included the new campaign and Europa) and a season. Purchasing a new season alone will not cost £42. You can purchase the new season directly through the game in your menus. Hope this helps.
