Bungie, i loved your game, have loved it since release. People were unhappy during year 1, yes including myself. Still the game was far better then, than it is now.
With the 2 major things, sunsetting and the DCV, you ruined the game in my opinion. You have to realise one thing while treating this shell of a game as a cash cow Bungie. Theres not much engagement from new players anyways because the reputation of D2 is irreparable. Not many new players check this game out/stick with it. It's also due to current long time players being unhappy and telling others about the state of the game.
If you are unable to satisfy your current playerbase, the new players will stay away aswell.
I played this game since release of D1 and only started really playing "hardcore" with Forsaken and stuck with it for 2 whole years. I never went hardcore in D1 because of controller only and never went hardcore in D2Y1 because the general sentiment on the game was bad, it felt "dead". Playing games, especially mmos, that feel "dead" isn't fun. Beginning with Forsaken, i played for 4-6 hours per day on average (obviously more on weekends and less during workdays) for 2 years and had fun through all of it. Since Beyond Light launched, i play around 1-2 hours per week if even.
Yes, when theres stuff to grind, new exotics, cool random rolled weapons like the kinetic cold front with dragonfly (rip the only desirable weapon since Beyond light launched) i still put in hours because i love special and cool, unique stuff. But generally your 2 introductions with Beyond Light, sunsetting and the DCV turned even dedicated players like myself who still enjoy the gameplay itself extremely into a 2 hour per week Larry.
It literally felt depressing, when i wandered through the tower this morning. I decided to look at everything thats gone in the tower and the directory. I felt numb and turned the game off. I saw all the emptyness, all the great memories and just saw a free to play life support shell of a former alive and fun video game. Everything is gone, all the meaningful NPC's are gone, all the attached activities, gone.
We had factions, we had the nine with trials of the nine and Reckoning, the gates to the Black armory are closed, the mystical robot sweeping the floor who could only be talked to after finishing the beautiful raid on the leviathan ship, the raids themselves, all the pvp maps, the strikes, the destinations, all the weapons, quests, all gone.
You know what would have been a semi better approach Bungie? To just figure out how to compress and optimise the game size, make stuff as an optional DLC download if you really do not plan on supporting it anymore. Tons of games to that. I want to chose myself if i want to clutter my harddrive with Destiny 2 content that i love. Who are you to decide to delete everything that made this game great? I don't want to play the "i paid for it, you can't take it away from me" card but technicall thats still my view.
Legally, yes you can do what you do. Is it right tho? NO. You deleted the soul from the game and people slowly realize it. There is nothing to do in Destiny besides stretched soulless, crappy content thats being served seasonally with minimal effort. You could have just kept supporting the already great content that was in the game and milked it that way. People would have been fine with that rather than your apporoach of taking it all away, everything we loved.
And for my last point. When you say stuff is vaulted and can come out of the vault at any given time, we all know how you treat stuff that you remove from the game to make it "better". We never see it again or it's being re-released in the exact same state. Looking at you Trials of the nine playspaces, gear and weapons which were the most amazing pieces of gear in the whole franchise arguably, the factions, pvp maps that went into the vault for a few seasons and came out exactly the same and untouched.
Bungie, its time to rethink your priorities. This game as it is now is just straight up bad. And thats coming from someone who definitely has put in the time and heart to objectively judge the state of the game and also desperately wants it so succeed. The game is on life support, atleast give us the previous content back, revert sunsetting and milk your cash cow by supporting the old content we loved. The new content you half-heartedly produce with minimal effort aint it chief.
