I don’t want the title to mislead you too far. I’ve played my fair share of MMO’s, but I’m not like the OG Everquest dude who has sunk his entire life into MMO’s. I played WoW for several years, and I’ve played a good amount of other MMO’s like wildstar, ESO, RuneScape, etc. Just wanted want to clear that up.
I think the first thing we need to establish is the fact that destiny, by all intents and purposes, is an MMO (there’s a pvp no-lifer somewhere screaming “IT’S NOT AN MMO, REEEEEEEE”). By definition, that is what destiny is. I know this because if it was not an MMO, then I wouldn’t have sunk over 8,000 hours into it over the last 6 years. You can split hairs all you want, but destiny is plain and simple and MMO. You can avoid playing the MMO aspects of the game and just focus on the pvp or the campaign, but all of the facets in the game combined form an MMO.
Now that this is out of the way, we can begin.
To be honest, the first time I ever heard the term “sunsetting” was playing destiny. From playing several MMO’s, I had always just assumed that when you get new content, the required gear score for content goes up, and you earn the new weapons and armor in the new content in order to be powerful enough to beat the content. I have never had any issues with this concept, in fact I relish in the idea that I will always have something to pursue. I’ve grown quite fond of “shedding my old skin” in order to try new things. Some of the most fun I have had gaming is finding replacements for things I used and grew accustomed to. That is simply the nature of things. After playing so many MMO’s, I didn’t quite understand what all the fuss was about. Only when I remembered what it was like before MMO’s did I begin to understand and remember how I would’ve felt if all of a sudden my loot wouldn’t progress with me through aspirational content. And then it hit me.....
Why would I ever want to go back to being a boring gamer?
I foresee lots of people getting offended by that statement, but it’s the truth. I don’t game casually. I like to pursue challenges, and I like the idea of getting a clean slate often. I truly enjoy the idea of picking up new items and shedding my old ones. It keeps me from the feeling of having a single crutch loadout for years and years. Which leads me to my next topic...
I’ll use the recluse and mountaintop argument. Many people have said to me “if you’re tired of using mountaintop and recluse, just use new guns. I don’t need to be punished just because you’re bored with it.” Okay buddy, I don’t gimp myself just because I need a new fix. I still have the warrior spirit in me, and I still want to conquer and be the best. I don’t find joy in throwing on a potato loadout just because it feels different. I’ll potentially be outperformed by someone who refuses to drop the top gear (although more than likely not because I’m pretty good with almost anything).
And here’s that truth about all of this, and it’s something no call of duty or halo converts want to hear. I pay a lot for this game and I put a lot of time and effort into it. I don’t just play one aspect of the game, I play it all. I want the full experience. I sink most of my free time into this game. It appears that most of you guys freaking out over sunsetting are pvp players (and some pve players, but I feel they are fewer than the pvp community). When I hear hate for the direction of the game, I can’t help but think “how many expansions have these guys actually paid for? Are they just leeching everything they can get from the free version and complaining that they have to pay money in order to get into newer content?”
Anyways....I urge all of you to try to appreciate the idea that you have an opportunity to enjoy the grinding aspect of MMO’s. Learn to enjoy collecting new things and moving forward in your gaming journey. I’ve found that it is much more intriguing than being a call of duty team deathmatch player until the end of my days.
