As a general supporter of sunsetting, I understand that sunsetting has it's benefits and drawbacks. However, those benefits only happen if the new gear released has value other than just a higher power cap, builds and build crafting aren't destroyed, and new gear is prioritized over reprised old gear.
But what is already happening?
The majority of the weapons released this season are reprised old ones, with only the darkness-themed weapons being new. All the IB weapons are reprised old ones, but there are 2 new perks, so there's that.
Seasonal armor mods are tied to seasonal armor that was released within 1 season of the mod's release. This means that if those sets are sunset, entire builds are sunset. Entire builds where players grinded out the mods and perfect armor pieces to perfect their builds are eventually going to go away. This is even worse when you consider the size of that investment for some players.
That's not preventing power creep. That's not adding value to future releases. That's artificially extending playtime and making players grind for things they've already grinded for, or just downright retiring entire builds they've invested in and perfected.
Solutions are simple. Players should be able to infuse an old weapon up to a new cap using a newer version of that weapon. For example, a Gnawing Hunger with a cap of 1060 should be able to acquire a new cap of 1360 using a Gnawing Hunger with a cap of 1360. Players already grinded for the roll they wanted once. Don't make them do it again.
Secondly, all seasonal mods can go on all seasonal armor sets. That, or don't retire seasonal armor at all. Or both.
Lastly, prioritize new gear and perks over reprised gear. Even if that means reprising old gear but throwing in new perks to their pool. More and more new stuff instead of incentivizing players to re-grind for the same stuff over and over.
Let me know what you guys think.
As for why I generally support sunsetting, here's why:
It does have some benefits. It can potentially add value to future releases while respecting player investment. However, for that to happen player investment must be respected. More new items must be released. There needs to be full weapon and armor transmog system. Builds should never retire; only get more refined.
I mean, look at FFXIV: A Realm Reborn. When new content drops, the old stuff isn't the best anymore. However, the previous endgame gear will give you a significant headstart in the new content and it can be used as transmog for your armor and weapons. The new gear released not only has a higher item level, but it also has better stats, maybe more materia slots, and possibly more variety in the stats that can drop on it. So every content drop is like another chance for the player to refine and perfect their build while maintaining their look, rather than having to start over on either.
However, if the current trend continues, things like this aren't going to happen in D2. I've been fully against armor sunsetting from the start because it just doesn't serve a purpose at all, and the weapon sunsetting so far is all reprised stuff. Maybe that will change in September though? No telling. I guess we'll see.
Edit: Someone in the replies said that they saw somewhere say that seasonal mods will all be universal at some point. Can anyone confirm this?
Edit: It seems seasonal mods are becoming annual mods. That still has the same problem, but it's just delayed.

It's Bungo, of course it isn't being done well. Just like D2 since, well, since beta! Old Bungie was quality. New Bungo is lazy, greedy, devoid of ideas / passion / innovation. No wonder new lazy greedy Bungo are going back to old quality Bungie work from 6+ years ago.

1 RespuestaThe idea of sunsetting in itself was bad. Add on top of that horribly implementing it, people are going to leave.

9 RespuestasEditado por WormChi: 6/26/2020 3:52:37 PMAnother Bungie shill seeing the light. Implemented well or not it’s all BS a way to invalidate your playtime while making you do the same activities for the same gear chasing an arbitrary number. They did this back in Y1 during Crota and immediately realized their mistake by then giving us etheric light. I bet when all is said and done in 6 months they reverse course again when the player numbers drop.

16 RespuestasWhats the point of playing with new content if all you are playing with is what is optimal? Tell me a person who doesnt use recluse, mountaintop/witherhoard with a current meta heavy weapon.
-
It’s hard to say if it’s working or not since it’s not being implemented. So far it sounds terrible, I’m aware of certain gear this season being recycled to have their date extended. If the game is shit next season I might be done with this franchise

1 Respuesta
Sunsetting isn’t being done well
To be honest, it would be more surprising if it was being done well. It can join the lengthening list of other things that aren’t being done well.

2 RespuestasUmm, so far sunsetting is 99% old gear and weapons being reissued. So it's garbage. The best thing we can do is not buy the next expansion since there has been zero new content in a year. Let them learn recycling old shit is not going to keep the players playing.

1 RespuestaI'll tell you what I think fella it's a load of old shit.

1 RespuestaWhat Luke Smith wants to do is something the real world tried. Smart phones have tried this time and again. Apple released the iPhone 5, then the iPhone 5c, then the iPhone 5s, then 5g, and so on, each with barely any improvements. Want the newest iPhone? Better drop another 500 bucks in a month. It got ludicrous. There's been like, 30 iPhones in 13 years. This one has a G after the number, this one has Max, and this one has Plus Max, and this one is the iPhone 35 SE Plus X Max LTE edition! That's exactly what's going on right now in Destiny. This Gnawing Hunger has a filled circle with 8 empty ones surrounding it, but THIS ONE has a circle with an Obtuse Triangle in it! Next season we'll release another Gnawing Hunger, but this time it'll have a Hive head! And after that, the symbol will be a Hive head inside the Obtuse Triangle surrounded by the empty circles! You want that new symbol, right? I don't want a Gnawing Hunger from Season of the Hive Drifter Doritos ship, when my Gnawing Hunger from Season of the Drifter is already perfect. There is a reason Apple decided trying to release a new iPhone every few months wasn't worth while. Bungie will be learning that lesson very soon as well.

4 RespuestasSunsetting is a scam.

I agree! They are reissuing the same weapons with high power caps, but most likely will not re-introduce old pinnacles that we grinded to get. So all that grinding means nothing if we do not have new versions of those weapons for us to trade up to or new weapons to unlock. If all that happens is the re-issue old weapons with a higher power cap and not our pinnacles than that is just dumb.

LMAO!!!!!! Of corse it isn’t being done well, Luke smith is in charge!!!!!!!

2 RespuestasEditado por mxgreg: 6/26/2020 2:48:16 PMI deleted most of my 1060 stuff to start preparing and free up space. Now I'm working on a build for the new dungeon and realize I can't equip the taken mods from last wish, which is frustrating. Why stuff would be dropping at 1060 is dumb. Stuff dropping this season should be good for the next few. a) Stuff shouldn't drop if it's only got a few weeks left. b) mods should be tied to a season.

5 RespuestasAlso in support of sunsetting and also fully agree that this is the wrong way to do it. I think its great when bungie brings back old y1 weapons and adds random rolls. And I'm ok with re-releasing y2 and y3 weapons, IF they come back with new perks, or allow us to raise our old version to the new cap that would acceptable. But it is confusing and terrible to make us grind the same exact weapon again and again.

Editado por Ken_Malibu: 6/26/2020 2:26:12 PMBungie lie frequently. They said we needed to loose all our gear because technical reasons, then had us regrind Mida for the 3rd or 4th time in D2 Y1. Now they say power creep but the only real power creep of any evidence was Well with Luna boots, a handful of exotic super regens and some of the pinnacle legendaries. Somehow average day to day pulse rifles and armour are now involved.

2 RespuestasEditado por Ares: 6/26/2020 11:13:41 AMI'm vehemently opposed to gear retirement but agree, IF it's a must (and i don't buy Bungie's reasons, proven by Gnawing Hunger's re-issue) then i completely agree that infusing an original roll weapon with a re-issue weapon SHOULD increase it's max level. It's a no brainer if you are player focused; - rewards veterans who have original god rolls - gives more meaning to the grind - still allows new players a way in That way the season marker of when you acquired it also means a whole bunch more. The implementation works well from a business perspective though. How long before we see xp boosts for sale you think?
-
Editado por Tamacountry: 6/28/2020 1:13:06 AMI have zero issue when sunsetting if they implement a way to increase the old versions of the reissued gear. There’s zero reason why this wasn’t a thing in the first place

The universal comment is a lie. They never said that. And luke knows dick.
-
The only way to do it well is to not do it at all #CancelSunsetting
-
All sunsetting is, is taking your hard earned God rolls away for x amount of time. Then add them to new events to make you grind them as the nostalgic feeling the Bungie preys off of will make you want to get them again. Sunsetting is bad and they are being dishonest in the reason on why they are doing it.
-
Its being done exactly how they wanted it too though. It was never abour making a more engaging experience, its was to make you regrind for things you already had to create artificial game lengthener.

3 RespuestasArmor2.0 makes no sense with sunsetting.

35 RespuestasAnother pro sunsetter just realized how gullible they are.

Seasonal mods are being changed to annual mods. So all of next years armor will share the same mod slot.

You guys are fools. Have fun chasing the same gun you already have with a different name.
Players should be able to infuse an old weapon up to a new cap using a newer version of that weapon. For example, a Gnawing Hunger with a cap of 1060 should be able to acquire a new cap of 1360 using a Gnawing Hunger with a cap of 1360.
I had a similar suggestion. HOWEVER, since the new version may stop dropping before its power cap is reached, we should only have to infuse our old versions once, thereby converting it to the new version so it can be upgraded using any weapon in that slot from then on. If we want, we could do that infusion this season (before we pass 1060) and secure the new power cap ahead of time.
