Sunsetting Is Pointless If Most of the Weapons Each Season Will Just Be Recycled Ones

What exactly is the point of doing this if you're just gonna make us grind again for the same weapons we already had? Out of the 22 weapons for this season, only 6 of them are new (not including the 2 new exotics). I thought the point was to get players to use new weapons you create. How are you planning to achieve that if you can't even make more than 6 in a season? Edit: Apparently, I have to spell it out for the comprehensionally-challenged crowd. If Bungie is going to sunset our weapons to make way for new weapons, then they should make more than a small handful of new weapons. This season, we got only 6 new weapons, and 14 recycled ones--many of which were already in players' loudouts. They need to flip that ratio. There should have been at least 15 new weapons, and only a small number of recycled weapons in the loot pool. Not...this. It's hardly any different from previous seasons. I hope that for season 12, and beyond, it won't be like this. Hopefully we'll see a large, diverse arsenal of brand new weapons going forward.

    • Nothings been sunset yet so why are you whining? Now if beyond light drops and has a tiny loot pool then winge and complain to your hearts content. But as of right now the sun is still very much in the sky

https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/256263407/0/0/1 There’s a TED talk that explains why Bungie’s design choices won’t work linked in my prior post. Sunsetting will 1) demotivate players - causing many to put less effort and time into the game (if they decide to keep playing) and 2) create an unsustainable expectation that new loot will be available and have equivalent value to what players spent a lot of time and effort grinding.

        • So everyone will be OK with this when if in September Europa has an engram that gives us a Blast Furnace, Austringer, and Beloved? Because that is what's happening right now. There is an engram that is giving Gnawing Hunger and Lonesome. They were released only 1 year ago and they are already back for us to regrind. How can you support this? That doesn't even make any sense. In September we can grind for Sundial weapons again. In December, we can grind Seraph Weapons again. That is literally what is happening right now. That Gnawing Hunger in Season 11 is the same as the 5 in my vault that I got not even 1 year ago. Yet in September, the one from Season 11 will be usable, and the ones in my vault won't be for some reason. That doesn't make any sense. That isn't sunsetting.

          • Sunsetting's functional purpose is simple. Force players to use weapons that already exist that they aren't already using. It isn't about creating new and powerful weapons, because if that was the case, season by season, they'd have to make more and more powerful weapons. Sunsetting exists so you'll re-grind for weapons thats data already exists in the game. This means art designers can spend more time designing ornaments instead of models for new weapons. Sandbox designers can design one new perk per season and have it attached to the weapons that are re-released. It's fake new content. It's all about making things easier on the developers, even at the cost of letting players play how they want.

          • MinatoSensei4 you make some valid points and I agree that ever verse should be removed from this game. But Whether we wanted it or not, we’ve stepped into a war with the Cabal on Mars. So let’s get to taking out their command, one by one. Valus Ta’aurc. From what I can gather he commands the Siege Dancers from an Imperial Land Tank outside of Rubicon. He's well protected, but with the right team, we can punch through those defenses, take this beast out, and break their grip on Freehold.

              • Yeah I was really enjoying this season until I noticed how many guns were being reissued. There's new guns, which are completely new, recycled old guns which are older guns updated with newer perk sets, and then reissued guns which are the SAME EXACT GUNS with a higher light cap. When Bungie said they were reissuing guns I thought that meant we'd be seeing older guns come into the game again with a new set of perks OR AT LEAST SOME SLIGHT DIFFERENCE TO DEMONSTRATE EFFORT WAS INVOLVED IN PUTTING THEM BACK IN. I went through six weeks of Iron Banner between Undying and Dawn to get a single Orewing's Maul, and it's fine that it was getting sunset, I don't mind using other guns. But just plopping it out again, no changes whatsoever, is the peak of laziness. If nothing is done to appropriately rectify or justify how the game just expects us to regrind older guns, I will not be participating in Beyond Light or anything Bungie produces beyond this season. Such a blatant violation of good faith demands reproach.

              • the new dungeon saved this season from absolute slander by many. after seeing all the recycled guns I have god rolls for, just to see the new sticker on the top of them really sent me. the pain I put into getting those escalation protocol guns was absolutely absurd and if this is the direction bungie is going, I will not be following along. I can at least understand weapon sunsetting but armor... staring at my inventory knowing all the time and materials I put into them, to have to grind for more armor again... ridiculous. finally got decent GOS armor and where is it going soon? in the trash. thanks for spitting in our face bungie

                • I thought the weapons Sunsetting was the dumbest think Bungie could do, but sunsetting entire destination is more than dumb, it's sabotage.

                  • Sunsetting weapons has an important purpose. It frees up Bungie from having to live balance weapons. Live balancing takes up development time, which is time that could be spent on future content. The sunsetting format lets Bungie do balancing at their own pace, and even offers them the option to drop a weapon archetype if it can’t be balanced. The alternative is that they waste lots of time on live balancing, which still won’t make people happy when the nerfs roll in. Nerfing a weapon is practically the same thing as taking it away from the player anyway.
How are you planning to achieve that if you can't even make more than 6 in a season?
They never planned to achieve that and anyone who actually knows the history of this franchise (and particularly the past year) and isn't MASSIVELY delusional knew this. It's why at some point I almost started foaming at the mouth when I saw someone defend sunsetting as "necessary" and list all the great new things they would be able to do then. I STILL wanna know what game these people have been playing, because it can't be the same D2 I've experienced. Seriously, to defend sunsetting while completely ignoring the reality of what Bungie HAS DONE in the past is pure delusion and stupidity, I'm sorry. Sunsetting could work out, maybe (not that I like it in general), but a company which has to decide between releasing one set of re-skinned weapons and a different set of re-skinned weapons during one season is not gonna make it work. How... HOW did some people think this was gonna be different? HOW?!

                        • Im using the weapons of this season for the way they look, and the way they behave. The new swords look awesome and they behave differently from other swords, thats enough to get me to use them. Sunsetting is a waste of time, all we really needed was more creativity and everyone would’ve been happy

                        • How is that pointless? It means that Bungie only has to design a fraction of the weapons and armor they were designing each season/update. It saves them a ton of time and money. Sure, it's frustrating to the players, but players having fun doesn't pay the bills.
