This weeks TWAB: Don’t applaud the basics.

What was highlighted by Luke Smith in the TWAB this week is really just the basic things that Bungie has established we should expect from any yearly update, actually less so. It’s one pinnacle per season, not one per activity. Forsaken had 3 per season, one per activity. Armor transmog. Most are excited about this, I personally don’t feel strongly about it either way. This is purely aesthetic and does not affect gameplay. I also feel like this will actually devalue armor to some extent, but we will see. It’s one set of armor shared across gambit, crucible, and strikes, with unique shaders and emblems for each. (Unclear on this but it does not sound like unique sets for each activity). Here’s the direct quote: This armor shares a set of new geometry, with decals and shaders specific to the activity. Please note there is no talk of new weapons for any of these activities. Forsaken had unique weapons and armor added for all 3 activities. New raid and trials armor once per year. This is quite simply the absolute basics we have come to expect since D1. Trials getting adept weapons is just how it was in D1. Vanity and accessory items added to activities. That’s how it was in D1, not improvement, actually regression in a positive way. My point is, don’t give Bungie applause for doing a little less than any veteran has come to expect to be the basics of a yearly update. I’m not saying don’t play destiny or feel excited for the future, this post is simply to highlight the expectations that Bungie themselves have established for releases and that hitting base expectations shouldn’t earn applause. I know Bungie is working without activision, this isn’t a knock on them. It’s simply what I feel we all expect to get when we pay for a Destiny product. Personally, I haven’t played destiny in several months and have no plans of playing in the future. But, I played since D1 and until about a year ago had completed just about everything destiny has to offer. I still feel a strong connection to the game and the community, although I just can’t bring myself to play it anymore. My ultimate take away? Don’t preorder anything. Stop giving game companies (not just Bungie) money for products before they are proven. Pulling away from a preorder norm will put the onus on these companies to produce the highest quality product they can do when it’s released it will get high praise and drive sales.
