At your current light level. Just do anything, PvP, strikes, story, Gambit, until you get to 900. At 900 many new yellow circles will open up to you on the destinations map. These circles will help you climb from 900 to 960. From 960 to 970 you need pinnacle drops which are only from endgame content. The main goal typically is to get to 960 so you can do harder content. Some people like to get all of the exotics. Some people like to farm good legendary weapons so they can perform in PvP better.
