Originally, a group of four teen girls and their friends attending a prestigious combat academy in order to train as Huntresses (or Huntsmen) to fight a group of evil creatures collectively known as the Grimm. It goes from that to world-ending plots and conspiracies in about 20 episodes and the train has been steadily accelerating since. The high point of the series so far has been Volume 3, and in my personal opinion, Volume 7 is starting to rival it for quality and story telling.

So basically another shonen anime thing about people wanting to train and become the very best while dealing with obscurely dangerous events and powerful being that realistically a bunch of newbs would never be able to accomplish but the protagonists didn’t because “friendship” and “teamwork” and “chosen one”?

Actually no. Quite the opposite in fact. The show gets DARK in volume 3 and the trend continues as well.
