Tribalism, greed, concept of the Other, excessive focus on efficiency, take your pick. These are inherent human flaws that are really difficult to get rid of.

Because some people are lazy, egotistical and selfish, and it is easier to get mad and blame others than accept and acknowledge that we all do things our own way, and that is OK if it doesn't hurt others.

Because we make it about race, gender, and party affiliation instead of about class. Think about it.

10 RespuestasIt is very hard to put ourselves in another's shoes. It is hard to see why they think the way they do & it is easier to just focus on ourselves. Let me give you a bit of an example. When I drive, I am always angry at the stupid mistakes others make. It angers me & baffles me that a privilege like driving is not taken seriously. Sometimes, it makes me so angry that I want to slam into them, to pull them over & drag them from their vehicle and rain my justified fury upon them. I don't though. Why? I know what it feels like to make a mistake. Sometimes I am certain I hit my turn signal, but I did not. Sometimes I don't see that car as I come over. Sometimes I -blam!- up and I want them to forgive me, so I have to be willing to forgive others if I want that forgiveness for my mistakes. So I get mad in the moment & calm down quickly, because I do not know what they are going through. Maybe that dude just worked a double. Maybe that woman has a screamin infant in the backseat. Maybe that person is running late for work & they have to text their boss, but doesn't realize they can just tell their phone who to text & what to text them. Maybe that person swerving is crying because they just lost someone important to them. I just don't know, so I need to show them empathy & forgive them their mistakes. If folks would try to see things from all sides, we all might have an easier time of it, because even if something is easy to you, that doesn't mean it is easy or that it is easy for everyone.

2 RespuestasBecause a lot of people have used hate and division as a basis for rallying support and projecting a tough image. Seeking peace, aside from being harder to accomplish, is counter to the narrative they are trying to portray.

War. War never changes. In the year 1945, my great-great grandfather, serving in the army, wondered when he'd get to go home to his wife and the son he'd never seen. He got his wish when the US ended World War II by dropping atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The World awaited Armageddon; instead, something miraculous happened. We began to use atomic energy not as a weapon, but as a nearly limitless source of power. People enjoyed luxuries once thought the realm of science fiction. Domestic robots, fusion-powered cars, portable computers. But then, in the 21st century, people awoke from the American dream. Years of consumption lead to shortages of every major resource. The entire world unraveled. Peace became a distant memory. It is now the year 2077. We stand on the brink of total war, and I am afraid. For myself, for my wife, for my infant son - because if my time in the army taught me one thing: it's that war, war never changes.

6 RespuestasSome choose service to self and some choose service to others. The ego directs us to service toward self, and the ego is present among all of us. Those that allow their ego to control them only know service to self. I wish to change this as well. I wish to bring about peace as well. I don’t yet know how to do that. I don’t know how to influence people- how to convince people that hatred is unproductive and peace is the only way.
