For those who actually buy their own console

At what price point would you consider it to no longer be worth buying a console and switch to a PC, especially an upgradable PC? I am trying to decide that myself, with the new consoles on the horizon. Especially since it appears that they are going to make the switch to download only for games, that means to me, that some puny little 1TB system will be useless very quickly. I don't want to have a debate on this, just want to hear your thoughts and opinions when it comes to buying your own console vs PC. No offense to those of you who have their consoles bought by your folks, but in this, I really just want to hear from those who have to buy their own.

Games are optimized to specs on a console. The Operating System makes multiplayer easy. No need for discord, just create a party. Its not about price, its a guaranteed that it will work. Console games usually retain 1/3 of value for resales. PC just pirates everything. Parts are too confusing. Just random #s. Don’t know what’s compatible or faster.

    • For the first time ever, I recently started to think I would pursue building or buying a PC instead of upgrading to next gen consoles next year. So many games I play end up porting to PC anyway. On top of the fact that I think re-releasing a higher functioning and more optimized console during the middle of the console's life cycle is going to be a regular thing now, and with crossplay becoming more common, I think it's worth it now more than ever, to consider switching just to get the most bang for your buck. We'll see, though. When the specs and details start coming out I'll likely come closer to making a decision.

    • 'who have to buy their own consoles'. I buy my own console since I am 12... I usually buy everything in a generation be cause of some exclusives, Switch, PS4, Xbox, PC. Though my PC is now 7 years old, but still runs quite good with 16GB RAM and I recently bought a new graphics card. Runs D2 with 60fps with max details.

      • The only console I really need right now is my Switch because of all the great Nintendo exclusives. All the games on my Xbox are available for PC so there's really no point in using my Xbox anymore. It's just my Youtube box honestly.

      • I stick with consoles, if a game comes for ps4 I have the certainty that it’s going to run on my ps4, no matter how old My PC experience includes software incompatibilities, getting obsolete pretty fast, heats up and shuts down, hardware incompatibilities when trying to upgrade, plenty of headaches, lots of money, bit of frustration, husband uses it (open mails and download some virus or other) more headaches... ps4 may not be master race but it is my best friend

        • Honestly I've been in the same boat lately. For a pc my musts are- 80+fps consistently Minimum 1080p plus HDR Medium-high to high graphics settings Fast load times (especially character inventory screen) If I could run the above on a pc for around the same price (+/- $75) as the next Gen consoles at release, I'd switch. Obviously the console would be the more powerful of the 2, but having the ability to upgrade piece by piece on pc means I could make the PC more powerful than the console without dropping $800-$1200 all at once. From my understanding you can upgrade pc hardware at a modular level pretty much indefinitely. Also if next-gen consoles release in multiple iterations (like how Samsung released 5 versions of Galaxy S10 at launch) I will switch to pc no matter what. To be super honest, ill most likely switch regardless at some point unless the ps5 only costs like $400 at release which I hiiiiiighly doubt... I don't like using a keyboard to move, but I love what youre able to do with a mouse (flick shots etc). Anyway hope that helps and isn't just a confusing jumble of words

          • $600 I guess. My wife and I will hold onto our PS4, xbox1 and switch for a long time before buying another console. Now with an 18 month old, we rarely play anything anymore. Any extra money for the next 5 years will be for paying off my new car and saving for our down payment on a new house.

            • $600-$700 Next gen I’ll probably use my current console until games that I want come out.

            • Literally all of my friends that I play with regularly have decided to move to PC when this console generation ends. That’s the deciding factor for me. When it comes to cost, I already had an idea on mind that when consoles get to about 2/3 the price of a good gaming PC, that I would switch. That’s taking into account that I could get decent performance from the PC, and that it would be upgradeable to make it last longer than a console would. The main thing that’s held me back is that I am totally inept with a keyboard mouse setup, and it’s going to take me a long long time to be able to get good at that. I know you can hook up controllers to PCs, but it’s just not as effective and would leave me at a disadvantage for sure.

              • For me its purely for entertainment. I'll never have a good enough reason to switch to PC unless I can get a good one for the same price as a console. Not trying to be a yter or a pro gamer. I just want to act like 1 in the comments section.

                • Honestly, 800+. I feel good with my current console, so if the new deal starts to cost as much as an on par pc, then i'll switch.

                •
At what price point would you consider it to no longer be worth buying a console and switch to a PC, especially an upgradable PC?
About £600-£700 My biggest problem when buying a PC is if I'm going to get one it has to be middle to high end. I don't see the point in buying a PC unless I'm getting 80 - 120 fps on most games. When I built my own like 10 years ago I think I spent close to £1000-£1200 and the system lasted me like 5 - 6 years. Now I just don't get the chance to play as much as I used to. Work, family, friends and the such. Consoles have to get really expensive before I'd consider moving back to PC.

                  • I don't intend on buying the new gen, anyways. I've been a PC main all my life. The answer I guess would depend on value for money. Does the output of the console match up with the price, or can I do the same thing but cheaper on PC?

                  • I'd say £500 but I'm probably going to move to pc for next gen anyway. Most likely not right at the start but when density becomes unavailable on Xbox one I'm considering building a pc.

My gut says about 700 USD but I'd wanna do some homework and spec a couple machines near that price point.

                  • I paid $600us for everything on xbone to get uptodate with d2. Really for me i just liked playing one game. That being said... If d3 is on a new console. Im finding a new hobby. And selling xbone or giving it to kid. When i think of hours put into this game and what per hour its value consumes in my time... Even at minimum wage u.s. its gross. If youve got the coin and love gaming... Id say dont spend over $800(adjusted from $600 due to economy inflation). Either pc or console.

                  • id rather have a pc (and i do) because of the lack of limitations compared to consoles, consoles nowadays ask for internet on a large portion of games, then proceed to request you to buy their subscription service to play said game, PCs allow you to change the machine in however you see fit, consoles state that its illegal for you to change how they want you to play (say like jailbreaking the console for a game u cant get on said console), PC allows you to download user-created programs and random neat things off the internet, consoles do not the case and point is simple: consoles just cannot compare to pc no matter how you put it, hell theres people making this gen console emulators just so you dont have to use the console

I’m a strictly console gamer. I’ve tried gaming on the PC, and I don’t like if. For me, gaming is something I do in my spare time, for entertainment, and to unwind. And for various reasons, I can’t relax when I’m using a PC, if anything, PC gaming makes me tense, and stresses me out even more, which means that I’ll never be able to make the switch to PC gaming if I want gaming to remain a relaxing hobby. For what sits worth, $500+ is the point where I become hesitant to invest in a brand new console. Most brand new consoles don’t have enough good games to justify going out and buying a new console at launch. Any console that $500+ goes on a waiting list to see if, and when that price will eventually come down.

                  • Probably around $1000. Sounds like a lot, but I don’t think it’s crazy considering what some people spend on pcs. I don’t see myself ever switching to pc.
