Games that completely surpassed your expectations?

Good evening everybody! This is Aifos coming to you alive from Langtree! I heard this place was haunted, and it just so happens I am an expert at taking care of ghosts. Papika: “Every time we run into a ghost, you just run away.” Hahaha, what a joker! (They’re offering us a lot of monies, Papika! We gotta keep up the image!) *ahem* But ghosts aside, at some point in our lives we’ve probably all bought a game that we didn’t exactly habe the highest expctations for. Maybe it was recommended by a friend, or you heard something mildly interesting about it. Or, maybe you were bored, and just thought “Eh, better than nothing.”. Most of the time, your hunch is probably correct, but every now and then that game will just blow your expectations out of the water! And that’s what we’re here to talk about! So, general populace of the Offtopic subforum, have you ever had that game that was just 1,000x better than you thought? What was it? Why didn’t you expect much? Why did you try it? How many questions can I ask about the same topic? Tl;dr? Here’s my point! Games that just absolutely blew your expectations out of the water? My answer;
I could talk about Skullgirls here, but I actually don’t want to, right now, believe it or no-WOAH! *Papikannons charged!* Papika!? What are you doing!? Papika: “Aifos always wants to talk about Skullgirls! You’re an imposter!” No, no, I’m not! I just want to talk about Wandersong! Papika: “Oh..” Sheesh. So, Wandersong! I thought it was some silly game about a cute li’l bard singing away people’s problems. And it is, that’s 100% accurate. But! it’s not just a silly game about a cute li’l bard singing away people’s problems! To my complete surprise, it actually has a really good story, great characters, and some really cool twists on regular video game tropes. Plus, the gameplay’s really fun. If anyone’s looking for a fun little story driven game, I’d definitely recommend it! (and, eh, play through Chapter 2 if you give it a chance, admittedly Chapter 1’s not great) I want to say a lot more about this game, but it’s really hard without spoilers... So.. Uh.. Play it! Yeah!
But that’s all for now, folks! Jambuhbye!

        • So I'm a person who loves harvest Moon, the last one I played was on the switch, it completely destroyed that love of the series after I saw what it had become. I had Stardew Valley for awhile. I never actually got into it really. When I finally got into it, I'm like this is one of my all-time favorite games. It surpassed my love for the old harvest Moon games. I like doing the grind in games as it makes me feel like I accomplished something. So yeah Stardew Valley Switch Edition, it made me remember why I like games like it.

            • I believe it was called RiME, the ending twist made everything make so much sense and it's one of my favorite games, I would highly recommend a blind play through of it.

                      • Dragon's Dogma Was expecting a nice little hack-'n-slash with some Shadow of the Colossus and RPG mechanics thrown in. And that it was... ... but it had SOOOOO much more depth than I was anticipating. I mean really, even your height and weight affect gameplay. Akiba's Trip: Undead and Undressed Thought, "Eh, it looks like good cheeky fun" (pun intended). Figured it be a pretty simple fan-service-y game to play through quickly and be done with. Got a really solid game. Fun combat, multiple endings, and a more than its fair share of collectables. (as FFXIV players will understand, glamour is the real endgame) Freedom Wars Hey, look, another monster hunter clone. Except with shotguns... and mini-guns... and chain swords... and Spiderman-esque web swinging... and you get your own custom AI companion to boot (not unlike Dragon's Dogma's pawns). Soul Sacrifice OK, THIS time it's a monster hunter clone. Except with magic... LOTS of magic... You can really customize your fighting style. And my god, the lore... Final Fantasy XIV Felt the need to scratch that WoW itch. Got one of the best, most in depth RPG stories in recent memory. Valkyria Chronicles Saw it sitting on a shelf in Best Buy while visiting family. Hadn't played a JRPG in forever so it caught my eye. The fact that it was an SRPG was icing on the cake. Now easily one of my favorite series.

                        • I’m gonna add a few more because I’m bored: Soma - This is my go to anytime I see a topic about the most underrated/surprisingly good games. I usually don’t go for these kinds of games. Horror is not my thing. I do love good science fiction though, and after hearing the story was good on a podcast I listened to, I decided to give it a go. There are parts of this game that will stick with me for the rest of my life. It tells a tale of the the potential future of technological advancement into AI, and explores philosophical questions about the meaning of life and the nature of consciousness. The ending in particular left me completely speechless. It’s such a bitter ending that leaves you feeling utterly hopeless. It’s powerful stuff. EVERYONE SHOULD PLAY THIS GAME. Salt and Sanctuary - My favorite 2D game of the modern era of consoles. It takes Dark Souls and completely rips it off. Almost to the point where I’m not sure how they didn’t get sued. I’m glad they didn’t though, because the gameplay loop lends itself incredibly well to the 2D aesthetic on display here. The many bosses are challenging, yet always fun. The reward you feel for finally taking down a boss that had given you trouble is every bit as rewarding in Salt and Sanctuary as it is in Dark Souls. Vampyr - This game isn’t without flaws. The animations aren’t always the best, and the combat in general is pretty underwhelming. But this game is all about the characters and story. The game will yank on your moral compass more than once. The choices feel like they have real weight, and in fact you can often see the consequences of your actions playing out before your eyes. Kingdom Come: Deliverance - If you’ve ever thought to yourself that Skyrim would be better if it stripped out the epic story and magical components in favor of a medieval life simulation, then you’re in luck. The mundane activities you often find yourself doing are made exciting because of how fragile you are. Two bandits attacking you at the same time can quickly lead to you having to reload your game. Jumping down a cliff will cripple you until you’re able to heal. It’s not for everyone, but if you can give yourself over to the role playing aspect of playing this game, you’ll find yourself engrossed in a game world unlike any other. Where every action and potential mistake will have consequences. Remnant: From the Ashes - I’ve only just beaten the game a few days ago, but I can already say with certainty that this is the next great underrated game. The combat feels like a mix of many different games. From Dark Souls, to Gears, to Destiny, it wears its wide array of influences on its sleeve. The story is a complete nonstarter, but the coop gameplay will have you and your friends very entertained for a couple dozen hours, or more. Divinity: Original Sin 2 - Having already played the first game, I thought I knew what to expect from the sequel. However, my expectations were blown completely out of the water. Everything from the story, to the characters, to the combat is a major step up from the original. It really is one of the more unique game experiences I’ve ever had, and the fact that the entire game can be played coop only adds to it. It took me about 100 hours to beat, and after the credits rolled, all I wanted to do was start over and do it again. To put it plainly, this is easily one of the best games of the past 5 years. Period.

                          • Top 5: Titanfall 2: had played ttf 1 but never invested a lot of time into it. When I played the sequel knowing there was a story I was like, ok yeah I’ll play. And it blew me away. Bioshock 1: never played a Bioshock game before then. Loved every moment of it. Monster hunter world: never played or even heard of mon hunter before seeing a gothalion stream. Looked it up and fell in love with it. Even managed to convince my brother to play it, and he maybe invested more time than I did into the game. And he ain’t too big a gamer. Slime rancher: saw it was free with gold. Thought why not. Played it and didn’t expect much. Nearly played it for about a week. Loved that game so much. Lego Harry Potter: let me point out, I’m not too big a fan of both Harry Potter or LotR. Played Lego LotR and didn’t enjoy it. Saw Lego Harry Potter for the switch one day and bought it because I couldn’t play Xbox. So I played it and I genuinely had fun. Didn’t expect to. But I did.

                                      Gundam Breaker 3. So it's like Dynasty Warriors meets Armored Core in the Gundam universe. ALL THE KITBASHING! I had to import it so I had assumed it would be the JP version of the game. Nope. Turns out there are some regions over there where english is popular enough to warrant subtitles and english menu options. That was pretty clutch. Mechanics wise the part system actually goes pretty deep as far as abilities and affixes. Some of the extra/spare/additional aesthetic parts you can use are actually functional too. That was a surprise. For example if i think a suit would look good with say funnel racks, i can add and position those funnel racks to my liking. And then in combat, I can actually deploy those funnels. Pretty sweet. Don't get NGB. Track down GB3 Ultimate or whatever (dlc included on disk. That's hella important) instead.

                                      • I'm gonna have to say Dark Souls 2. DS2 was kinda the last one I tried after of course playing Bloodborne, Dark Souls 3, and then doing a little bit in Dark Souls 1. (Eventually came back to 1) DS1 was a bit of a disappointment to me even after getting all the stuff I wanted in the game and beating it twice. It's just "meh" even though it has some fun parts like Nito and the Crystal Archives which remind me of Bloodborne slightly. Back anyway, back to DS2. So I came into this one thinking that it would be bad as all the people and places kept saying it was bad, but I was hoping that it would be good cause I wanted another game like DS3. Well, after getting adjusted to all the little gimmicks the game has and exploring, learning the hidden stuff, fighting majority of bosses by myself which comes at a surprise cause I normally like to play things safe. DS2 was most definitely the best of the 3 games. Not as good as Bloodborne, but a close runner-up.

While I loved Fallout 3, the engine it runs on was outdated even when it was released and it frustrated me to the point I’d throw my controller against the wall at its constant glitches and terrible performance. I expected the same out of FNV but I was very very wrong. While it still had performance issues, they weren’t as bad as FO3 and the story, gameplay, freedom of choice and variety of weapons and armor made me instantly fall in love with it.

                                                    • I'll go very quickly over my first two before I mention the third, because some people are probably sick of me talking about them lol. 1. Super Metroid.
Got a SNES Classic for a birthday a year or so ago, and found myself with a bit of time to play a single player game. Loaded Super Metroid purely because I had heard people saying how good the series was and "the dragon on the front looked cool." Long story short, it became my favourite game, changed the way I view the medium, made me much more particular about the kinds of games I praise/purchase, got me interested in game design, and forced me to rethink what really makes a good game.
2. Dragon Quest Builders.
Didn't really know what to expect, as my only experience with the DQ franchise before this game was an obscure Pokémon-like game from my childhood called Dragon Quest Monsters Joker (another excellent game you should all play) but again, I was blown away. Mostly by its excellent story, and the subtle hints at history, character and lore the game left behind across the experience. DQ Builders 2 is, from a gameplay perspective, superior, but I feel attached to the original for its superior approach to storytelling. If a Dragon Quest Builders 3 comes out one day, and combines the strengths of both games with none of the flaws, it could be a masterpiece, and I'm not exaggerating.
The third game is Dark Souls, specifically its remaster on Switch. I admit, I used to feel like it was just difficult and nothing else, I couldn't get past the Taurus Demon, thought it was the game's fault, gave up, and went back to Dark Souls 3, which at the time I considered a better version of the same game. I was wrong on all points, as I discovered last October when I played Dark Souls Remastered. It was a rough start. I got stuck on the Capra Demon, then got stuck on the Bell Gargoyles, then got stuck on a giant rat I didn't know I could run past, and took a break for a while. When I eventually returned, Dark Souls Remastered was the only game I played until I completed it, and went up past O and S in NG+. There were several more places I got stuck. But I fell in love with the music, the boss fights, the world, the characters. I think it's actually the first time I fell in love with a game's soundtrack. It's definitely the first time a game made me cry. And Dark Souls essentially became my "other favourite game." Definitely a lot more than just "difficult." And... yet again I wrote a wall of text lmao. Ah well, what can I do?
