You will get an additional level to your artifact for no reason whatsoever.
You can raise your power level by another 50,100, 200, 500 ....and you will not deal a single point of damage more to any enemy in the game because of it.
Grind for the sake of grind, Destiny in 2019.

What you said is half true. Yes you do add a level to your artifact but that isn’t as meaningless as you make it seem. Leveling the artifact unlocks the season specific mods attached to it. Also, it adds to overall power level across all characters allowing you to get to more endgame activities faster and over-level endgame activities that we currently can’t over level.
-
Overleveling the artifact won't add further mods as far as I know. The power level beyond the cap is useless as you can not overlevel activities beyond 20 or 30 levels. So the hardest PVE content will be at 950 power level judging by what we've seen so far. Which means anything beyond 970 is 100% useless.

They’ve said they’re changing how the power scaling works. Currently 50 is the max that your power level makes a difference. 50 under and you can’t do damage and over 50 is when you stop seeing damage increases. They’ve said that the floor is being lower so you’ll be able to damage enemies up to 100 under level so it could be being changed in the other direction as well to do more damage up to 100 over level. The OP was asking about the differences of leveling up through experience in general, you weren’t delivering good information cause your thinking of it as though you’re already at max level. It adds to your power level as your leveling up so not everything depends on a players ability to grind activities perfectly to get higher level gear. If the highest activities are 950 and the highest gear level is 960 leveling being pointless can’t possibly happen until you level your artifact to at least 40, maybe more, and we don’t know how long it will take to level up once we start getting to the higher levels. Im not trying to come out and say this system will be perfect. I’m just saying you don’t seem to be giving the system any credit at all or thinking about things with a wholistic mindset and that’s leading you to giving a biased and incomplete answer in relation to the OP.

They are not changing your over power damage it will be the same after Shadowkeep as now.

Also iron banner is light level enabled. Imagine going up against 1000 at 960. Same for gambit invades.
-
You can actually overlevel activities by 50. Same goes for underleveling. However, they are changing how much you can underlevel an activity, so it's possible the overleveling will also be changed. Power might actually mean something.
-
They would have said if they are changing over leveled power. They didn’t. They said they are changing under level power.
