I think they just need to add fallback protection. At each main rank such as fabled 1(not 2 or 3) once you hit that rank you're locked in for the season. Winning needs to be prioritized still, but if you have a bad day for whatever you won't find yourself back at 0.
The best way for bungie to improve the comp playlist is to increase it's active player base across all ranks. The only way that can happen is if new players to the playlist are both incentivized to commit in the first place, and more experienced players and "fabled warriors" are given a fighting chance against the gatekeepers to legend without having to commit an entire season to grinding and praying to the matchmaking gods.

I agree with this as well. Part of the issue is the pool of players in Comp seems to get smaller and smaller because of teams of high skill tanking their scores to wreck lower skill players, paid carries and recoveries, the overly harsh penalties for losing (especially streaks), trying to compete against pinnacle weapons at low levels, frustrations with uneven matchmaking, etc. Unfortunately, the competitive system has created similar issues in quick play. So players get frustrated there as well, and the pool gets smaller. It would also be nice if acquiring pinnacle weapons wasn’t based on a rank but a number of competitive wins (Revoker), which would encourage lower skill players to give competitive a shot and increase the pool of players overall. Also/or make a pinnacle weapon based on a rank when it is introduced, then the next season lower its requirement to just number of wins.

As far as pinnacle weapons I think they should add fallback protection before tweaking requirements. Partly because of the whole I earned it that way so should everyone else mindset, partly because I do believe that earning the weapons in comp based on some metric of personal skill and effort is beneficial to helping people learn how to improve. Recluse imo is the worst example, as it's basically just a "hit fabled" check mark. Mountain top was an insane grind, and revoker was too easy. Imo there is too big of a gap in both points and skill level between 2100 and 5500, I think that not forgotten should be moved down to 3500 glory rank, because at 3500 you end up fighting nf 4 stacks all the way to 5500. And that isn't a realistic expectation to force someone to fight a gun to get that gun. If they did that then I think they should provide an ornament for it for hitting legend (retroactive of course) possibly lock the masterwork to hitting legend as well, or provide an all new weapon for hitting legend, something unique and powerful, but not broken or a top tier pve choice.
