We DON’T Need Harder Mechanics

Just more interesting ones. Kings Fall hard mode with the ogre challenge at Oryx was the pinnacle of epic challenging content. Or so I thought. I remember the intense feelings of trying over and over again, but a knight would inevitably always eat one of the blights because someone (who never spoke up and called it out of course) couldn’t snipe it. But the feeling of accomplishment was pure elation. Then we get to Crown of Sorrow. The final fight, phase 1 and 2, take multitasking to another level. It demands so much attention to multiple moving parts that it’s very easy for one mistake to cause the team to wipe over and over again. Yet once you get the mechanics down and feel out the flow of the encounter, it becomes very manageable. As with anything, practice makes perfect. My point is, these encounters don’t need more mechanics. Or harder ones. In fact, I’ve seen more confusion now, and more people quit out due to frustration and a lack of understanding than ever before. So to make that even worse I think is the wrong move. (See: Last Wish. The vault is appallingly bad. Just awful.) Maybe make more individual mechanics. Like shooting the at a specific target (think the Gauntlet in Leviathan), or getting their turn to be clutch (getting torn between dimensions in Kings Fall). These are great mechanics and truly make the game feel rewarding with high stakes.
