As our Guardians become more powerful, so do our foes. In the most recent raid, Crown of Sorrows, an issue with the Golden Gun super has arisen.
For any Hunter who has stepped into end-game PvE content recently, you may have begun to notice that the Celestial Nighthawk exotic is becoming less and less useful and is, in fact, a damage loss in several situations. With all of the damage buffs that the average Raid team brings to the table, the 3 individual precision shots provided by Way of the Sharpshooter deal more total damage than the precision shot provided by Nighthawk. This is due to the game's hard damage cap of 999,999. Even though the buffs applied to our character would boost the Nighthawk shot well over this amount, because it is capped, Nighthawk falls behind as the 3 separate shots add up to well over 1,000,000 damage thanks to their separate damage caps.
As we grow stronger, this issue will get worse. It is quite likely that Nighthawk will soon become completely unused. I personally no longer use it due to the greater total damage without it, alongside the 6 orbs I make with my 3 basic shots.
This could be fixed by removing the damage cap, though I'm not sure this would be the best idea as it could lead to unknown repercussions.
With any change made, I would also suggest a slight alter to the Nighthawk to make it compatible with Way of the Six-Shooter. Currently, Nighthawk gives this tree 1 non-precision shot and that's it. I would change this so the Six-Shooter tree skill that returns a shot after a kill still applies here, so Nighthawk gives Six-Shooter 1 very powerful non-precision shot, that returns as long as you kill your target, but the super ends if you fail to get a kill with it. Obviously the total time limit on the super would still apply. This change would allow Nighthawk to remain viable long after its use in the Sharpshooter tree has passed.

Damage cap in a raid lmao this game is a joke
-
As people have noted it’s only a visual cap.
-
The 999,999 is only a visual cap, if you want to test it go into a dps cp with a melting point bro and a well or radiance lock, have him mp, then shoot one night hawk gg round, then wipe and look at the damage.
-
Damage cap is only in terms of numbers. See whisper with whispered breathing (999999) vs Celestial Nighthawk (999999) against Dul Incaru
-
Nighthawk is still very useful.
-
You do realise it's only Visual....right? It does more damage then 999999

I hadn’t thought of that and always just use CN for CoS. Out of interest what damage do the three individual GG shots do on the boss?
