I’ll let it speak for itself. This is the largest shooting in NYC for a long time- this stuff simply can’t keep happening. [quote]Yes! Correct! We must ban the assault weapons and then this will never happen![/quote] Nope. This just won’t ever happen, and if it did it wouldn’t be effective. However, the sentiment behind this idea correct. [quote]Exactly! We need to keep the guns to save us from tyranny![/quote] A fair point, and thus creating the paradox of the gun- saving us from tyranny only to kill and divide us from within. But there are two seemingly contradictory truths here that can’t be ignored: A. Mass shootings are horrible and something has to be done. B. We can’t ban semiautomatic weapons, because there is always the possibility of a hostile takeover. So what brilliant compromise do I have in mind, you ask? Something that could be supported by the two estranged factions of political thought that have ravaged this country to its core? Simple: we reinstate a well-regulated militia. Anyone who purchases an assault weapon would store it in the town armory, a community-run building that I would assume operate something like Boy Scouts, only with faster guns... man scouts? Anyway, anyone who had an assault rifle would have to join the club, and it would be exactly what the constitution talks about- a militia. They’d, I don’t know, go out and shoot together, do push ups, excercise. The keys to the club would be held by its two elected leaders, one registered Democrat and one registered Republican. As for simpler, self defense weapons like a handgun or pistol, hunting rifles, 22s and all that, keep those at home. The militia compromise seems to me like it could solve the problem entirely. We could keep dangerous assault rifles out of the hands of the mentally unstable, and the weapons are still available if, God forbid, we need to defend our country. Thoughts?
