[obligatory disclaimer: I’m not too well versed in hive lore other than the books of sorrow and worms.
The seventh book of sorrow, the one most of us are probably familiar with, is the “source” behind the current knowledge we have on the weapons of the same name, and possibly more knowledgeable on the weapons than they appear at first glance. Some of you hive nerds out there might see where I’m going, so at this point I’ll be calling the 7th book of sorrow by its hive name, the book of unmaking. Now I’m sure you’re thinking to yourself, “why is superspartan201 using the hive name?” I’ll give you one simple reason, it partially adds to what I’m going to talk about. So I’ll just get on with it, I have reasonable suspicion to think that the book of unmaking actually holds a vague guide that only slightly clears up what we know to making weapons of sorrow, which I will be referring to as weapons of unmaking, which I will get to in a bit.
We already knew a little about what their purpose was from the unique trait that thorn and necrochasm have in the lore, they can unmake a guardians light without killing their ghost. Now the common understanding was that the weapons of unmaking were designed to cause chaos throughout guardian ranks. I beg to differ. I believe the weapons of unmaking were specifically designed as a countermeasure to guardians and lightbearers, as they literally unmake the light of a lightbearer or guardian whenever they kill one.
Now onto what is needed to make one. I will be inferring some of this off of the book of unmaking, which is in D2 through the last word quest save for understandings 10, 11, and 12, which might hold more info. The first understanding of the book essentially states the first step for a weapon of sorrow, it has to be something that is free from the cages of some sort of evolution roadblock. The second understanding states something along the lines of its potential must be free from anyone or anything with a stunted imagination. In other words, it’s potential can’t be in the hands of a guardian as we would just use the weapons as a tool. The third book only says that the one creating the damn weapon must know themselves, nothing more nothing less. 4, the whispers of certain hive artifacts may be able to determine whether or not either the weapon or the maker is worthy of the task. V, listen closely to the whispers and keep creating the weapon to fulfill its purpose, to unmake tools of the light. VI, focus on the weapon and do not let overconfidence or expectations affect the creation at hand. VII, you must join what was a human weapon with hive bones, but if you force this it will fail and you must start from square one.
Before I continue I should note that during this process you will likely grow increasingly insane, whether this is due to trouble coping with what you’re doing or the fault of the hive artifacts is unknown. VIII, many secrets of the weapons creation must be hidden with pain, as the whispers will demand. IX, it is time to embrace what is going on in your head, since you can’t drown out the whispers anymore, not even with your screams. You might feel alone, you will be alone, with nothing other than the whispers in your head to provide company. As you question whether what’s going on is oblivion or eternity, you will become something different. Something ... new. More specifically the old you will be gone, and a new one will have taken their place. This will be your new evolution, and it cannot be undone.
We now skip to the lore tab of thorn, the thirteenth understanding of the book of unmaking. XIII, you must not see your enemies as equals or rivals, but targets to be hollowed of sprit and meaning. These understandings, which I inferred from, might be a possible guide for the creation of a weapon of unmaking and the transformation of its user from whomever they were to a monster, one worthy of fear. Perhaps we could know more if we could see the lost understandings, perhaps not. All we know for sure is that the book of unmaking holds the secret to creating weapons of unmaking, and for causing people like Rezzil Azzir to become terrors like the one known as Dredgen Yor.

[what? Is everyone so excited by the corrupted captain in the cayde’s six comic that they all forgot about me? This sounds like bullshit to the whispers.]
