When Bungie Doesn't Listen...

When Bungie doesn't listen, exploits are profitable. When Bungie doesn't listen, players get angry. When Bungie doesn't listen, the game becomes boring. When Bungie doesn't listen, players get tired. I'll stop trying to tell a childish story, and get to the facts... Bungie's community person, DMG_04, passed on word from the team that Enhancement Core bounties (because there's really no reason to do these bounties) are going to cost Glimmer instead of Gunsmith materials, and will offer only a singular core upon completion. This led to, when people found the bug that allowed them to exploit thousands of cores from a single pinnacle weapon, it resulted in this: https://i.imgur.com/6Aitdgm.jpg (updated) This is not photo shopped, this is a screenshot of a real player's inventory. Name blacked out for privacy reasons. It caused a desperation, the scarcity and absolute necessity of Enhancement Cores, that led to players exploiting it. I'm sure there are some players that would have stocked up on some, but not thousands. It's both seriously lucky of this player to now never have to worry about cores, but also seriously pisses me, personally, off. You can't become so adamant about Cores, refusing to listen to proper feedback and ways to change cores, instead only the "gunsmith bounties" were introduced. That's just more grinding on top of more grinding that rewards are crap compared to the time players spend in the game. Sure, there are some out there who have perfect RNG and get a single core or more from every dismantle or so. But not everyone has the luxury to me swimming in these stupid cores. It's has split the community in half, there are some players that will never masterwork gear or weapons because they spend more on infusing than ACTUALLY ENHANCING THE ARMOR. I myself, wait till there is a significant gap in light level to then infuse, and I'm still short. Then there are some players who can master work any weapon they damn well please. With the time it takes to release an update, coupled with the lackluster responses (I suppose at least there is feedback going in an out of Bungie quicker now) from the dev team responsible for Cores, players are going to be less accepting of any future change. I said this in a comment to DMG_04's update. Many many many players on these forums have given feedback with suggestions to possible changes the cores could be used for or how to acquire them. But no...said dev team involved just does "well...bounties?" instead of actually using the feedback provided. Bounties that, mind you, only have one less grind step than Spider Bounties. And that's combing the Tangled Shore for Ghost Fragments. THESE BOUNTIES STILL ONLY OFFER ONE SINGULAR.....SINGULAR....UNO...ONE...CORE. No one is asking for mod components, you can buy them from Ada. No one is asking for mods, because you can get them from dismantles as well as Banshee whenever he sells them. PEOPLE. JUST. WANT. CORES. FUNDAMENTALLY. CHANGED. So much so to the point people just are tired of them interfering with the game, and just want them removed entirely. Not to mention the sheer satisfaction of getting to use your favorite gear AND bring it forward is MEANINGFUL to the players already without the need for cores. tl;dr Cores are interfering with the game, stop holding onto this idea of "meaningful infusion", and make some actual fundamental changes to Cores entirely, or just get them out of infusion and shove them back into the Masterwork Core concept space. It costs maybe 30-40ish cores to masterwork a piece of gear or weapon. It used to cost only 10. In this current state, cores are still as scarce as ever and are now required for infusion and now an exorbitant amount is needed for masterworking. Edit: The Image Link has been updated since apparently imgur likes to delete images.

  • There is no meaningful core element. Its artificial scarcity to stagger progress in the player base to prevent them from completing the content and thus preventing the content from depreciating faster than more content can be released. Almost quaint really

  • They Don’t Care Bruh ! This game is dead in the water !!! We are left with a skeleton crew of Patchers while the majority of people are working on Destiny 3 ! The fall of Bungie ! Because if they reset everyone To ZERO again I don’t see many players coming back ! Sales for expacs were shit and season pass was even worse ! If they take players hard earned Gear and Guns away again like they did for this shit stain of a game , just to try and sell them back to us again for D3 . Well I hope even the fanboys will realize , Hey no they are ripping me off ! thousands of hours of playing meant nothing they took all my loot away , then made me pay for and earn it all over again ?!?! If they reboot and take all our shit again they can keep it .

  • The irony is that they don't have to use cores. I've hit infusion bottlenecks because of low glimmer and also because I didn't have certain planetary materials. So, if cores were simply used to masterwork, both processes would require careful thought. As it is, one requires thought and one must effectively be dispensed with.

  • Unfortunately, since Bungie has most of the players' money already, it's too late to vote with your wallet. And that's the only language they might still understand. I skipped the pass, but not because of the cores. I just hate the fact that PvP is basically Trials now.

  • I have no problem with cores, but I agree for the casual player there’s not a real way to get these with out putting lots of time in. I think major activities should reward cores. Like 3 for a level up 5 for a raid encounter 7-10 for a 100k nightfall And 1-3 for weeklies (not including bounties) And weekly bounties could rewarding 3-5 depending on the objectives for the week. I don’t believe in hand outs but if there is no way to get these materials it leaves little insensitive to grind for them. (This is my opinion don’t bring me you salt)

      • This has been going on for several weeks, but honestly and truly I’ve had no problems at all with cores. I’ve only ever run out probably once and currently have had around 100 at all times. There are so many ways to get them, I’m surprised it’s even an issue. I don’t even know if it’s the casual part of the community pushing this. What I do know, is that the last time casuals fussed and Bungie tries to fix it, it flips the game for everyone, better or for worse, and that’s time spent appeasing that part of the community and not enough time actually making more content for the game.

You bring up some good points but why does this post have to be so damn theatrical. Like with the children’s story intro, why? There’s quite a bit of solid feedback in your post but holy fück the extra fluff is annoying as hell

      • You make some valid points and i agree that eververse must be removed from this game, but Whether we wanted it or not, we've stepped into a war with the Cabal on Mars. So let's get to taking out their command, one by one. Valus Ta'aurc. From what I can gather, he commands the Siege Dancers from an Imperial Land Tank just outside of Rubicon. He's well protected, but with the right team, we can punch through those defenses, take this beast out, and break their grip on Freehold.

      • All your points are valid and on target. Which brings me to one question I have been wondering for a long time now. Does anybody at Bungie actually play this game daily? Not just the in house builds they test. From all the names I have checked out like DMG and some of the others, they don't play enough to have a feel for the community. They just get to see the game from a casual players perspective.

        • Agree with all youer points. I am at the point that I am just tired of doing the same thing every week, of having to equip whatever is the highest piece of armour, or the highest rated weapon because if you want to look good, and wear what you want, it takes grinding out cores and gathering loads of materials to do that. I just cannot commit to that level of grinding, I have better things to do. Meanwhile Public Event rewards are pointless. Most activites outside those that reward Powerful rewards are pointless, all you get are crap blues way lower than your current light. And even when you do get a so called Powerful reward most times it doesn't actually matter. Its an incremental improvement called Powerful. I just did a Gambit match and got a 666 mark for my 686 Titan. I did three strikes and got two Powerful rewards that were a lower level than what I had equipped in that slot. How is that "impactful" ?? Yet Bungie maintain that is their reason for using cores for infusion. I love Destiny, its virtually all I play. Lately thought I am eyeing my backlog knowing that is where my gaming future lies. With this summit coming up I see more and more streamer influence with regualr players, who paid Bungie the same amount of cash for their product, get ignored. Its time to take a break and hope that Bungie come to their senses.

At this point, I have 1009 hours and 48 minutes logged in D2. Here is my opinion based on the experiences I've had up to now: All 3 of my characters are 700. I have a very small double digit pile of cores. I infused some weapons I wanted to use as it made sense, never really venturing outside of my normal loadout which often times caused me to run a lower light than I could have. Most of the time, I wore useless garbage rolled armor that looked really bad and didn't add to the enjoyment of my experience while leveling up. Really good drops were often set aside immediately, and the excitment of receiving them extremely short lived. Now, my grind is pretty much over, aside from maybe chasing down a couple of weapons, but I have to ask, when do I get to experience this impactful, and meaningful aspect of infusion that enhancement cores are supposed to bring to the game? Now or later? Did it already happen?, because all it did, imo, was take away from my normal experience and force me to play with garbage gear for the majority of the time I've spent grinding. I don't feel in anyway rewarded for my infusion decisions and I don't see how keeping me from using my desired gear added to it's value. It was all basically useless garbage until 700 was achieved and then it was used as it would have been before infusion cost us cores. I don't understand how forcing this type of progression on players could be considered meaningful when it comes at the cost of the enjoyment your customers are looking for in your product. tl;dr: Enhancement cores are the equivalent of adding shards of glass to a candy bar and thinking that it makes enjoying the candy a much more meaningful experience. It's still sweet, but now you have to deal with a little blood in your stool, because we don't want to change the way our candy sparkles.

          • I think it ultimately comes down to the fact that this is a "game as a service" issue.... Rather it's wow, Destiny, Division, Anthem, Fallout.... First all of them try to be a "catch all" marketing campaign, no matter what kind of gamer... And for the last time, there are not "only two kinds of gamer"... What ever kind of gamer you are, the marketing will make the game sound exciting... Even when it comes right down to the brass tacks, all of them are designed to only be rewarding to the same type of player...... Second of all. People are tired of screaming the same issues over and over again and not being heard or even acknowledged... Any other "Service", if a sizable portion of your customer base is demanding you do something, and you don't do it, your investors will sue you for hurting their profit margins and there will be other negative consequences..but all of the "games services" not only will not honor player requests, they seem to consider it a sign of weakness or something to give their customers the product they want.... I think what developers of "service games" need to do is two things. Make their game, and market their game, solely to one group of people, and make it abundantly clear to everyone else "not only will you not enjoy this game, but this game is specifically not meant for players like you, and we are not interested in your business." And then, once you have fully focused on exactly who the game is for, focus heavily on listening to those players and giving them and only them what they want. Destiny never marketed it's self as...... What it has become... It marketed it's self as being sort of something anyone and everyone would find something exciting to do.... Then they kinda changed their minds and said "nope if you aren't a sweaty tryhard or a nolife youtuber you probably shouldn't play this game....even though we already have your money..." If Bungie wants to embrace being exclusively for the extremely small and unprofitable market of "high difficulty / mechanics centric games they should be vocal about that, make sure that every strike is more like a raid, every mission is nightmare difficulty from level 1, and that pvp is as ultra sweaty and difficult as possible. If they want to be an inclusive game, they need to be inclusive, even if that means upsetting a few players who can't "have a good time *eggplant emoji*" unless someone is waxing their ass crack while punching them in the face with a mouth full of broken glass or something. You cannot be all things to all people and have any people be ultimately satisfied. You have to pick the specific kind of player you want and market to them... And rather Bungie likes it or not, something I've learned is that the player base that Bungie wants, and the player base that Bungie got stuck with, are not necessarily the same thing.
